I wonder why they call gender a social construct. I think of it as how a person feels inside. The only reason I can think of right now is they want to say it's somebody else's fault. If fault is involved, it must be the fault of how the body is informed by its proteins as it is chemically formed. But we assume that only two genders are intended by nature when it might very well be the case that nature throws out a spectrum of alternatives, most of them lying on a kind of bell curve.

There seems to be truth on both sides but vaccines work for the public in general. There is a ridiculous amount of autism these days, unless they could show it isn't because of vaccines and was always here but never recognised till recently.
brentan replies on Jan 31, 2019:
All I know is something happened to drastically increase the number of registered autistic children. That increase may very well be a result of more diagnosis than more cases of autism. I'm glad in a way that investigations are taking place to see what could be going on. In my schooldays, mental illness and dyslexia, among other problems, were dealt with through corporal punishment. Could it be that the prohibition of such punishment has allowed the problem to rise to the surface? Another way of looking at it is that there isn't a problem unless you make it one and children who lived before the time of institutionalised education were never placed in the predicament of being round pegs forced to go through square holes. The children I'm thinking about are, of course, those who we might say are on the Asperger scale rather than seriously autistic.

brentan replies on Jan 31, 2019:
It should be clear by now that people were brought into the E.U. in a dishonest manner. Nobody envisaged such destruction of national identity and powers of self-determination. We saw the deception in the UK in the video. Ireland's entry further into the E.U. was through referenda that would continue until we got the answer correct. The E.E.C. was a wonderful phase in the process that was a good balance between economics, power and national identity. But that was only a phase and the true nature of the E.U. is only being revealed in a gradual way. Macron got frightened that the game was up in France and tried to kick-start the reality of a European army in his panic. I dread the end game these elites are playing and hope that the withdrawal of the UK is the beginning of the end of this monster.

It's how British politicians work to sabotage the referendum decision. They can't allow ordinary people to make important decisions like that.

@Sofabeast Perhaps any form of government that is beyond the knowledge of the common person is by its nature a bad thing. These common people are the new 'deplorables' who must not be allowed a say in political affairs.

Celibacy vs.
Jk1960 comments on Jan 28, 2019:
I think the Catholic Church should absolutely require celibacy. Any official that can’t should be excommunicated! Maybe this will end a institution that has abused women and children for a milennium.
brentan replies on Jan 28, 2019:
I think the RCC should never have imposed celibacy on their priests. It was just a legal strategy to keep the possessions of priests in the organisation. There is no scriptural rule for it either. The apostle Paul recommended it as a better way of life for a Christian but recognised the natural desire for sex. When men were given responsibility in churches, they needed to have already demonstrated their ability to be competent fathers and husbands in their own families - 1 Timothy 3:4,5.
Celibacy vs.
Ms_McSteven comments on Jan 28, 2019:
I think a lot of closeted homosexuals choose priesthood and celibacy as a means to avoid committing homosexual acts. I grew up next door to someone who converted to Catholicism, for the purpose of becoming a priest, after his brother died of AIDS.
brentan replies on Jan 28, 2019:
I think some did it to escape the demands of a mostly heterosexual society. Many too join the clergy to take advantage of the amount of homosexuals in their religious groups. I think there must have always been priests who chose their vocation to live properly according to their beliefs but they might have been in the minority.

@MojoDave I can't make an informed decision about it. When I had a nervous breakdown in the 70s, I was given six bouts of ECT at a time when three was the norm. It had to do with shocking me back to the real world because I had gone deep down into some sort of consciousness that I can't describe and they couldn't reach. Although nobody can deny the terrible pain associated with ECT, I wonder what might have become of me had they not administered it. I was brought back, quickly learned the meaning of depression and attempted suicide very soon after. I gradually recovered, never really getting back in step with the world but functioning in an alternative way. I'm 64 now, and I've lived almost 50 more years than I might have and count myself lucky that modern medicine gave me a chance people in earlier times never had.

It's heartening to see a country care so much about lesser countries when its own is in such difficulties. The world has never been happier since America abandoned the Monroe Doctrine. That's why we say 'God Bless America'.
brentan replies on Jan 26, 2019:
@powder I was just using my usual way of venting frustration through sarcasm. But here’s some details for anyone reading who isn’t familiar with it: Monroe (1823) made four basic points: (1) the United States would not interfere in the internal affairs of or the wars between European powers; (2) the United States recognized and would not interfere with existing colonies and dependencies in the Western Hemisphere; (3) the Western Hemisphere was closed to future colonization; and (4) any attempt by a European power to oppress or control any nation in the Western Hemisphere would be viewed as a hostile act against the United States. So WW1 would be the most glaring place because it broke article 1 of the Declaration. But the webpage I looked at states that as early as ‘1904 the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine asserted the U.S. role as policeman of the Western Hemisphere and its right to involve itself in the affairs of Latin American countries’. https://www.britannica.com/event/Monroe-Doctrine
