@genessa It gets curiouser and curiouser (more curious, even) So the reason people voted for Trump was because the Democratic government was stymied by the right. Recognising this, the voters knew they had to vote for those who stymied the government. They knew the right had ruined their Democratic paradise so they decided to vote the right in so that they could really destroy it. Gosh, I remember it and I wasn't even there!

brentan replies on Oct 27, 2018:
@DUCHESSA Because of the polarised views, it’s not likely that any one side will accept that the other side can do anything good. The left has taken on an almost religious stand, all self-righteousness and casting the other side as heretics. The right claims to be getting things done but we don’t quite know what. The usual opinion is that the economy is improving, but only for the rich.

@OwlInASack That was a great post. I enjoyed your passion for people. I tend to think of a lot of people coming from poor places to share the resources of better-governed lands. I think of the clash of cultures and the competition for decent-paying jobs. And I think if we allow this, what will ever encourage these people to resolve their own problems. Your point about global demographics would certainly remove all choice about it and call on people to be altruistic in a way that hasn't ever been asked (or demanded) before. @OwlInASack I saw the ghettos in the suburbs of Paris from the very comfortable distance of a coach on tour to Versailles about thirty years ago. Five years ago, I saw the mattresses on the streets and the tourist-robbers on the stops of the Sacre Coeur. They frightened my family and me but I understood they were reduced to it. The only conclusion I can come to is that controlled immigration and gradual integration into society is the answer. I think that flies in the face of the aims of globalisation for cheap labour.

@OwlInASack The way i see it is the Social Democrats were in power from 2014. Before them was a centre-right party where the extreme right got a foot in the door but no more. It is only recently that the right-wingers got a mandate to influence, not dominate, Swedish policy. They are not having much success even now at getting their bills passed. I'm not sure what mainland European countries have no problems with immigration. Have you seen the ghettos and homelessness in Paris? The general increase of rape? These issues could all be controlled with sensible immigration regulations.

brentan replies on Oct 26, 2018:
@OwlInASack I have to come back with the claim that a look into the situation in Malmo does a lot to justify the wishes of the extreme right - the picture you paint of hard-working immigrants contributing to society seems pretty accurate in Ireland and Britain but not over there. I'm not happy either about the subjectivity of how people look. Lots of politicians look like criminals to me and they have a name for shady dealing so we can't start limiting this to extreme right politicians.

@OwlInASack Well, I'm Irish so ditto. We have two opposing parties that are both slightly left of centre. The global economy calls the shots in Ireland. I understand the need for discernment but I suggest the choice is between the bad and the worse. Perhaps you might reply yes but say we're talking much, much worse. I'm not convinced because of the extremism of the polar views playing with facts. It's a grey area that people are claiming is black and white and I think they're wrong.

brentan replies on Oct 26, 2018:
@OwlInASack Yes, but at the heart of all this is uncontrolled immigration. Darned if I understand why the left want to let in so many immigrants, apart from guessing it's about globalisation and cheap labour. The other side then goes too far to the right and never the twain shall meet. I guess it's down to the polarisation of ideologies.

That was nice - the unofficial national anthem of Scotland. I read that Italy has a unofficial national anthem in Verdi's Va Pensiero but when I mentioned it to a young Italian recently, he knew nothing about it. That's a great song! I don't think we have one in the Republic of Ireland. I think ...

@Marionville I must admit it has been bewildering, in a very pleasant way, to see such sweeping changes in the country that I could never have conceived of as a boy. We're voting to remove blasphemy as a criminal offence on Friday. Weird and wonderful!

@Marionville Oh my goodness, your poor husband! Can you imagine the amount of people who would turn in their graves to see all their aspirations reduced to economic concerns? And yet, thinking about it on the fly, is it not perhaps perfectly normal to prioritise quality of life in a time where human rights are basically recognised? It's an economic priority which won't totally fulfil people's needs but one thing at a time.
AMERICAN EMPIRE IS DEAD History has proven nothing if not that empires rise and fall.

What (not who) might be the solution?
brentan replies on Oct 22, 2018:
@ashley44 So to my way of thinking, the first saviour was Obama. Now there's a kind of redneck politics. Next attempt might be Hilary in the hope that a woman (not focusing on Democrat) might save the situation. Or maybe Elizabeth Warren. But I was trying to work out what factors are at work and what is needed to redeem the situation. I'm mindful too of AstroChuck's post about the systemic problems. I'm a Bernie supporter because social democracy is not considered an evil in my country. But if people were to get out and vote, what (rather than who) should they be voting for?

@Marionville I must admit that I loved the passion of the songs when I was in a choir. You know the type of song: ‘no matter how high you build your barriers ‘ etc. Aren’t these strange times? British but not European v Irish and European. People more concerned with quality of life than political aspiration! I never thought I would see the day.
