What are YOUR doomsday fears??

That was an interesting way of putting it: 'The limbic system of the brain versus the frontal cortex'. Curiously, I've heard several good thinkers claim that the frontal cortex is the problem rather than the solution.

brentan comments on Jun 10, 2019:
I'm guessing that the morality condemning abortion came in early times from the importance of the survival of the group. So we'd call it a social responsibility these days if the survival of society was at stake. It isn't, of course, except in economic terms where not enough taxpayers are being created to pay for the needs of the elderly, social welfare and other public expenses. The problem in Europe is being solved by bringing in people delighted to work in more prosperous countries and still have the custom of raising large families. Everyone's a winner except perhaps those who never got to experience life.

brentan comments on Jun 9, 2019:
There's probably a difference between moral and legal in this respect. I can easily relate to the legal side of it on terms of 'a life is worth a life' but the moral side is probably more complicated. I understand that there was no difference in the Mosaic law but that changed very quickly to accept less 'equal' punishments for murder. Was this morality over law? It might be no coincidence that at the same time the Bible was being written, the Greeks were also modifying their tit-for-tit approach to murder by placing the law into the hands of the state instead of the murdered person's relatives. The result was the same: the number of deaths went down. Are these signs that the right to live often trumped basic justice?
Be nice to people? I don't understand.

Outward show is important. We would be publicly reprimanded if we didn't do the sign of the cross passing the church when I was a boy. In the 7th century, Muslims really needed to know who was on their side. Not much as changed as secularists today are all expected to make the same noises in public. I'm told Martin Luther brought a sense of individual accountancy into the Western world. It started as an individual's relationship to God, so different to the Roman Catholic hierarchical institution. Apparently, noone ever knew if they were saved or not in this new understanding of faith because there was no hierarchy that could justify confirming it so Protestants began to look for evidence of being blessed in their material prosperity. This led to the Protestant work ethic which led to capitalism. That individuality has expanded through capitalism to give us a world of people lost in themselves.

There's a lecturer I listen to on YT called John Vervaeke who asked his class how many were in happy, stable relationships and many answered in the affirmative. He concluded that human beings see so much value in truth that they would rather be sad than to be ignorant of the truth.

brentan comments on Jun 8, 2019:
Religion has played such a huge part in the development of human consciousness. As its influence diminishes, there is little to replace it - perhaps secular humanism, art and culture - but so far their reach still seems confined to the intellectual 'class'. The real replacement for religious values seems to be economic and growth is its god. The effect that has on human morality is seriously bad as we have entered a time of spiritual bankrupcy and loss of meaning in life.

I look on religion as an earlier form of psychology. If we want to understand the development of our thinking and shared 'grammar' in how we express our human experience, knowing religion's huge place in our history is important. To narrow the focus down to the atrocities caused by religion is definitely reductive.
