Digital phenotyping: A revolution or a privacy breach? - MedCity News
brentan comments on Aug 16, 2019:
That seems a very liberal way to use the word phenotype - adapting it to mean a type of behaviour instead of a type of organism. Anyway, it might well be completely correct. On a more layman level, I was surprised that understanding other people did not bring about the wholly positive results that were expected. I really hoped education would teach us to be kinder to one another but it seemed to work the other way. So I'm not too optimistic about this level of analysis bringing only good results.

Quitting religion freed me to be kind to myself. I was soon able to be kind to others.
brentan comments on Aug 15, 2019:
I think it came about through using the focus on God as a licence to treat others badly. This is, though, in defiance of a creed that said you couldn't love God unless you loved your neighbour: Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. - 1 John 4:20.

brentan comments on Aug 13, 2019:
We seem to have always made them like us. I mean that they changed as we changed. But it stopped at Jesus with no new god for 2000 years. Perhaps, as Jordan Peterson says, Jesus is the consummate archetype of a god. I mean that (and think Peterson does too) in the sense of bringing god-types to a pinnacle of perfection. If so, that means we couldn't improve on him so the only way forward was discard him. I realise there was a lot more going on historically, Deism for example, but I find it very curious that there was no attempt to update Jesus with a newer version.
This needs no explanation.

The most recent thing I heard is that they want the word 'victim' removed from the court's vocabulary while the case is being judged. They claim it prejudices the court which is true, I think. The Christian ethic is to nurture the sick and the elderly, amongst other teachings.
brentan comments on Aug 11, 2019:
I think American Christianity has become political rather than Biblical. The spirit of Christianity and its lack of interest in politics is well expressed at James 1:27: Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their afflictions, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

It is possible to join the two ideas but the interesting thing for me is that it shows the split in the New Testament between those (James' group) who think Jesus came to preach obedience to the Mosaic Law and those (Paul's group) who believed the Law was made obsolete because Christ fulfilled it.

brentan comments on Aug 11, 2019:
Competitive economies seem to work great to encourage innovation in just about everything. And I trust it's true that people all over the world are rising above the poverty line. Nonetheless, the neoliberal market economy sorely needs to be controlled because I think it trades money for meaning, sucking the meaning out of peoples' lives as it raises them out of poverty.

Who needs a savior when we have science and Hitchens wisdom?
brentan comments on Aug 11, 2019:
The saviour was the person who offered eternal life to humanity, making life in this world meaningful. Now that most people suppose there is no existence after death, we have to find meaning enough in this life. Will people like Christopher Hitchens help people achieve this?
