Slavery - Chapter and verse... [patheos.com]
brentan comments on Jul 1, 2019:
Wow. The Old Testament clearly endorsed slavery (Exodus 21, for example). The New Testament was different in that the priority was not the abolition of slavery in a revolutionary way but the development of new human relations in an unfair world which they believed was about to be brought to an end. The apostle Paul's letter to the slave-owner Philemon regarding his runaway slave Onesimus is very interesting, especially these verses: For this perhaps is why he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back forever,  no longer as a bondservant but more than a bondservant, as a beloved brother—especially to me, but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord - Philemon 15, 16).

brentan comments on Jun 28, 2019:
There's a huge amount of talk about this 'perception is reality' idea on the internet. It's as if the poet William Blake got a new lease of life now that we're catching up with his insights. A lot of the interest stems from mostly looking outwards for meaning in life and people coming to a dead end so the talk now is to try looking inward to the imagination and project it back out to the world. This is snippet of Blake's way of looking at things: To see a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour

brentan comments on Jun 28, 2019:
The challenge is huge. I don't think it's primarily about how to manipulate the female sexual organs. First, I think it's about love, not in the abstract, I feel sure, but love in a good all-round knowledge of the other person that shows as.....what? Maybe just affection, or maybe an intuition that the two minds share a certain amount of a perception of reality. That would be nice. That would lay down a shared blanket of security, enjoyed by men and loved by women. I say that almost as a challenge to see who might think that the different ways the sexes perceive that blanket is sexist. This could all be hifalutin nonsense. What if the porn videos have their fingers on the pulse and the best experiences to be had sexually come from the hands of an experienced partner rather than a lover? I'll leave it at that because the only way to know is to hear what people think about these things.

brentan comments on Jun 27, 2019:
That's a hard problem. Not Tom Stoppard's play. What does it mean 'she is working harder to focus her emotions in overtime'? I don't think the husband is suffering from loneliness. I think he's very sexually frustrated. Could they make a deal? I'm reading William Blake and this is exactly the problem he had with his wife Catherine. Catherine couldn't have children so she wasn't into sex just for pleasure because of her religious beliefs. They were happily married despite this. There are vague intimations that odd remedies entered into the Blake's domestic life from time to time and maybe Catherine was complicit in them.
I don't remember that one.

Someone here has ever thought about the origins of mythical creatures?
brentan comments on Jun 27, 2019:
I think they are representations of ourselves as the extremes of our potential to behave good or bad. Right now I can't think of any good mythological creatures from ancient myth but I can't help thinking Christ is a good mythological creature from the not so distant past. Dragons, basilisks and creatures like that seem to me to be figments of our wonderful imaginations that were drawn into post-pagan mythology. These allegorical, metaphorical creatures are a tribute to our capacity to encapsulate ideas as archetypes and it is a real pity that the metaphor was converted into the literal during the Axial Age. I don't understand what seems to such a backward step but it's probably because I don't understand how humanity was developing its relationship with abstract thought at that time.

I think it's happening because the threat to the immigration system is so big that if something is not done, they might as well just forget control and open the country to the world. Granted, what's being done at the moment is not the right response, to say the least. I'm told Obama had a different approach by not allowing the situation to develop. He just deported immigrants en masse. I think the government is desperately in need of ideas but the ideological divide hinders that happening.
