Jesus Christ in his Own Words
brentan comments on May 3, 2019:
I've spent a lot of time with that book and I'm convinced these words attributed to Jesus are to be understood in the context of the last days, that is, the generation living at his time that would not be completely gone before his return to bring in the new world. In other words, about 40 years. This, if true, makes sense of the idea to 'let the dead bury the dead' because of the shortness of the time remaining. Time was precious and there were very few to bring in the harvest.
Maybe it should be called the violent book...
brentan comments on May 3, 2019:
To be fair to it, if there were no concept of a need for salvation, there would have been no perceived need for the book.

Morality is not contingent on knowing right from wrong.
brentan comments on May 3, 2019:
Traditional morality is hard to live up to. The teaching in the gospels made it even harder, commanding us not to even have sin in our hearts. Thankfully, the law is more reasonable and doesn't get into thought crimes. You're very hard on yourself, I think. Life is hard enough without us getting in on the act too.
Here's an idea for potlucks, block parties, work get togethers.

brentan comments on May 2, 2019:
I didn't really choose a road less travelled, I just couldn't travel the one presented to me. I spent my whole life trying to figure it out and finally concluded I'm somewhat autistic. I paid a high price for choosing an alternative road, as anyone will who does it, but I honestly think I could never have coped with what I think of as the tragedy of regular life. One other thing needs saying, though. If I had understood myself early in life, I would never have married and had children. I think a wife needs a regular man and children need a traditional upbringing to sustain them through life.

I think America is moving slowly in the right direction, in the sense that people at one time really did believe that America was in every way a force for good in the world. Now a lot of us are knowledgeable enough to read between the lines, watch for patterns and such. I don't think there ever was a time before when Americans were so 'woke' to what their government is doing. And yes, the hypocrisy with Israel is sickening.

I don't understand the terminology. I guess you're pointing to the flaws in the autistic personality. Being that way myself, I prefer (but don't insist) to see the good things about autism and enjoy how TV has made successful shows about the talents of autistic people. Granted, the shows are OTT but they give the idea that different ways of looking at the world are valid and useful. But it a very wide spectrum and I guess nobody wanted to hear any negativity. It's a bad feature of support groups that they enforce positive comments only and refuse to listen to constructive criticism.

The problem with revenge is that it never evens the score.
brentan comments on May 1, 2019:
This is the idea behind the Orestes in ancient Greece. The myth was that the corpse emitted a miasma that could only be removed by justice, understood as revenge. The Furies symbolised that revenge. The court system was set up to end the constant tit-for-tat revenges. At the end of the story, the Furies were permanently placed under the judge's podium in the court to signify the old justice was still understood but superceded by the less subjective and less murderous civil justice system.

Here's one list of who is getting thrown into the lake of fire: But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." Revelation 21:8. Here's another list: Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God - 1 Corinthians 6:9,10. God is kind of equal opportunity minded when it comes to chucking people into Hell. He isn't hung up on homosexuals.

'There is a crack in every thing That's how the light gets in'. I think he got that from Rumi or some other poet. He had the wit to realise how valuable that perception was. I thought he meant we see something important through a flaw in its make-up. Now I'm not sure. It might mean there is a very tiny conduit in the nature of every thing that if realised and used, opens a world of understanding. Here's a related idea from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: “If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thro' narrow chinks of his cavern.”
