For me, it boils down to the belief that there are two sexes and a spectrum of genders. I'm reading a book at the moment that proposes that science is really just an extension of the rational thinking of the church. Most of us think of science as objective and religion as intuitive but religion actually promoted the growth of scientific investigation through the centuries and was always a way of rationalising the world according to what it knew. Nowadays we see the worst excesses of religion - the dogma, smug superiority and bullying repeated by science. Richard Dawkins, a great mind by my thinking, is a good example of the superior attitude of science today. Science, for all the benefits we get in terms of knowledge, is as self-reflective as a hall of mirrors in that it is great at explaining how a system sustains itself when it is up and running but useless at stepping outside itself and telling us how it got started and what's it is all about.

I just think too many people are too assertive about what they believe. No, assertion is fine, aggression is the problem. We've moved from religious aggression to atheistic aggression; so many people knowing instead of thinking, pontificating instead of discussing, insulting instead of challenging. I'm not sure it can be helped. Maybe a lot of people feel they will just sink in the huge marketplace of opinion if they don't express themselves strongly. Anyway, why not try out new ideas? Nothing ventured etc. Thanks for caring.

I'm not sure where the exalted idea of having dominance over the Gentiles came from. ... and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation - Exodus 19:6. But ye shall be named the priests of the LORD: men shall call you the ministers of our God: ye shall eat the wealth of the nations, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves - Isaiah 61:6.  This is all I can think of to give the Jewish people a sense of superiority. I think they interpret that as meaning they will be kings and priests to the rest of the world but I don't see that in the verse. Later of course every covenant in the Bible was broken, the people exiled for punishment, but the sense of superiority never diminished.

It happens a lot. I think we become a target for all the anger people have against religion. brentan comments on Apr 27, 2019:
I came across a curious understanding of it first in The Canterbury Tales and more recently in William Blake. They separated the substance of the host from the 'accident'. The substance is the essence of the thing and the accident is the material, tangible expression of the essence. I read a book (Dolores Cullen's Chaucer's Host) that also proposed that the host in The Canterbury Tales is best understood as the Eucharist and the pilgrims as the congregation.
Read, read, read.
brentan comments on Apr 27, 2019:
I remember Stephen King talking about how to be a writer. 'Just do it' seems to be the core idea. He was a bit irritated by people always telling him they wanted to be a writer but not putting pen to paper. I don't think Stephen started off a great writer. When I read The Stand, I thought I was reading a writer learning his craft as he went along and getting better all the time.

brentan comments on Apr 27, 2019:
The internal logic is that Adam, as the father of mankind, became a flawed person and that flaw was passed down by inheritance. Jesus was to be the father of a people freed from that flaw through grace. The Catholic Church, for one, seems to be content to see the Genesis story as an allegory, ignoring the problem of believing a real person died to save the world from the sin of an allegorical man. Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned - Romans 5:12. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! - Romans 5:17. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. - 1 John 4:10.
No logic...

I guess we accept that democracy theoretically means the majority get their will and the minority have to accept it. This is the status quo. So I guess the fascism shows its face when the minority won't accept it. We see this when people riot, like the ongoing protests in Paris. But the premise here is that fascism is not the response of the state to public disorder but the actions of the state that initiate violence. 'War makes fascists of us all', it says. I think he means we have to force individuals to fight for the survival of the group when it is threatened, whether those individuals like it or not.

Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” - 2 Peter 3:3,4. Peter could not be objective about it. He seemed to think you had to be an immoral person not to to believe in the Lord's return. In fact, he seemed to believe you must be an immoral person simply by not converting to Christianity or leaving it after you joined. He showed this attitude again when he declared that apostate Christians would be like 'dogs returning to their vomit' (2 Peter 2:22).
