A great essay from Carl Benjamin.
brentan comments on Apr 26, 2019:
I guess we accept that democracy theoretically means the majority get their will and the minority have to accept it. This is the status quo. So I guess the fascism shows its face when the minority won't accept it. We see this when people riot, like the ongoing protests in Paris. But the premise here is that fascism is not the response of the state to public disorder but the actions of the state that initiate violence. 'War makes fascists of us all', it says. I think he means we have to force individuals to fight for the survival of the group when it is threatened, whether those individuals like it or not.

That reminds me of the story about one woman talking to another about the premature birth of a neighbour's child: 'He was three months immature so they put him in a percolator'.
Great conversation: Carl Benjamin is able to explain his ideas.

It was, in a sense, Gatekeepers V Dark Web. It was fascinating to watch the intelligent way Benjamin dealt with McCann's attempts to interpret the web in a politically correct manner. I watched Count Dankula's speech on YT too and he was very good.

I frequently see the word 'gonna' being used, both on this site and elsewhere.
brentan comments on Apr 26, 2019:
I don't know. I just don't think so. I use words like gonna and ya when I want to get across I'm not being serious but if they become standard, I'll have to think again.
Another promised End Day has come and gone, sigh.
brentan comments on Apr 26, 2019:
Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” - 2 Peter 3:3,4. Peter could not be objective about it. He seemed to think you had to be an immoral person not to to believe in the Lord's return. In fact, he seemed to believe you must be an immoral person simply by not converting to Christianity or leaving it after you joined. He showed this attitude again when he declared that apostate Christians would be like 'dogs returning to their vomit' (2 Peter 2:22).

I don't remember the mindset that lead me to try to kill myself. I just know it was very different from my mindset today. You're not yourself and it'll take a lot more than a Snickers to solve the problem. I think the religious condemnation came from the idea that you rejected the gift of life God gave you so what's the point in you getting a resurrection. I think that old idea still has traction in my old religion, the Jehovah's Witnesses. That was in the 80s and 90s. Maybe it's different now.

That's a tough one! I'm thinking of the early business model of bartering. That doesn't seem to involve much politics but maybe that was just in the beginning. The Viking business model might be classed as political because the survival of the whole people was at stake. Then what about the colonial business model? That must have been political.

That was good. I enjoyed the fairly recent spate of TV programs that linked autism to brilliance. Monk comes to mind. There was a movie with Claire Danes telling the story of an autistic women who studied cattle and set up new more humane ways of slaughtering them. It is really good to see the amount of videos available on the workings of the autistic mind and the value non-neurotypical people can add to society. This and the continued study of the brain and how it works will open up great understanding for anyone who wants to value the differences in people.

I guess this follows the general thrust of put up or shut up. Well, no thanks! A large part of the problem is the transfer of power to suppress speech to too many people who have already demonstrated their lack of objectivity and often megalomania. Power attracts these assholes. So we'll complain like anybody in a free country should and withdraw if and when we want to, not when you want us to.

It's like the king's fool has become the king. This was a tradition, but I think the poor fool only lasted a week at most and then paid for the wrong done by the real king by being executed. I think this was referred to in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The tradition of the fool being the only person permitted to tell the truth to the king still lives on in comedy today and I find comedians to be very intelligent, insightful people. I fear any good they might do will be sucked into the political machine and shat out the other end.

Yes, we removed the general forum.
brentan comments on Apr 24, 2019:
I don't think the decisions were difficult because of their complexity or quantity. After all, all forums have basic rules for behaviour. Was the problem between admin and the group moderators who wanted the final decision on 'acceptable' posts and it was decided to simply hand the power over to them? If so, this was the easy way out and I think it will cost more than expected.

'Jordan Peterson the heretic', with Jonathan Pageau - YouTube
brentan comments on Apr 24, 2019:
Jonathan was on a roll there. I think it’s fair to say that he looks on the very heights of metaphysics as the next place to God. Maybe it could be called the Lobby to the Empyrean of God. Peterson, of course, stops in the Lobby and won’t go any further. He is a bit surprised that Peterson won’t take the next step whereas I’m surprised Jonathan doesn’t understand the Lobby is most likely the terminus and not the last stop before the Empyrean. But the joy for me is watching people who, like Peterson and Pageau, are articulate intermediaries between psychology and religion. Paul Van Der Klay got a mention too. He is a Calvinist pastor who is very into Peterson too and does terrific YT videos.

brentan comments on Apr 24, 2019:
I don't think women want to be able to control a man that much. Even though some can't help trying, they lose respect for the man if they succeed. My mother actually said this to me about herself and my father when I was a young man. I was really taken aback at the time.

I think justice systems can't, often don't want to, redress the unfairness in society. Humans are not yet capable of resolving everything peacefully.

I think this is because words are tools and try to lay out reality in geometric terms - linear, tangible, proportional etc. They are the left brains best attempt to explain the world of the right brain which needs intuition more than words. This is where the value of good poetry lies because it tries to cross the divide between words and intuition.
