brentan comments on Apr 25, 2019:
It's like the king's fool has become the king. This was a tradition, but I think the poor fool only lasted a week at most and then paid for the wrong done by the real king by being executed. I think this was referred to in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The tradition of the fool being the only person permitted to tell the truth to the king still lives on in comedy today and I find comedians to be very intelligent, insightful people. I fear any good they might do will be sucked into the political machine and shat out the other end.

Welcome aboard!
Yes, we removed the general forum.
brentan comments on Apr 24, 2019:
I don't think the decisions were difficult because of their complexity or quantity. After all, all forums have basic rules for behaviour. Was the problem between admin and the group moderators who wanted the final decision on 'acceptable' posts and it was decided to simply hand the power over to them? If so, this was the easy way out and I think it will cost more than expected.

'Jordan Peterson the heretic', with Jonathan Pageau - YouTube
brentan comments on Apr 24, 2019:
Jonathan was on a roll there. I think it’s fair to say that he looks on the very heights of metaphysics as the next place to God. Maybe it could be called the Lobby to the Empyrean of God. Peterson, of course, stops in the Lobby and won’t go any further. He is a bit surprised that Peterson won’t take the next step whereas I’m surprised Jonathan doesn’t understand the Lobby is most likely the terminus and not the last stop before the Empyrean. But the joy for me is watching people who, like Peterson and Pageau, are articulate intermediaries between psychology and religion. Paul Van Der Klay got a mention too. He is a Calvinist pastor who is very into Peterson too and does terrific YT videos.

“Most women set out to try to change a man, and when they have changed him they don't like him.
brentan comments on Apr 24, 2019:
I don't think women want to be able to control a man that much. Even though some can't help trying, they lose respect for the man if they succeed. My mother actually said this to me about herself and my father when I was a young man. I was really taken aback at the time.

brentan comments on Apr 24, 2019:
I think justice systems can't, often don't want to, redress the unfairness in society. I'm thinking of everything from physical violence being punished while mental violence goes unpunished all the way up to violent rebellion in response to oppression. Humans are not yet capable of resolving everything peacefully.

I think this is because words are tools and try to lay out reality in geometric terms - linear, tangible, proportional etc. They are the left brains best attempt to explain the world of the right brain which needs intuition more than words. This is where the value of good poetry lies because it tries to cross the divide between words and intuition.

brentan comments on Apr 23, 2019:
From what I remember, value-added was a feature or features added to a product or service that give it a competitive advantage in the marketplace. I think it even extended to intangibles such as a brand name. I can't help thinking value extraction here is another way of saying cutting costs. That wouldn't really be the opposite of value-added but I must admit I didn't come across the term when I was in college.

I'm a big fan of Maynard Keynes. They say his policy is no use anymore because the way markets work is different today. I thought it was a very well-proportioned mix of market and government. The image I have from reading about his ideas is that of the economy as a boiler system needing impetus at times and reducing pressure at others. There was a terrific discussion between Jordan Peterson and Slavoj Zizek on this and related issues that took place last Friday and has been uploaded to YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78BFFq_8XvM&t=766s

brentan comments on Apr 20, 2019:
You must admit that inanimate objects don't have the concept of self-sacrifice. The idea about Jesus was that somebody sentient cared enough to give his life for the sake of humankind. I don't believe it's true and I doubt the logic of the sacrifice but Krauss is being very disingenuous claiming stars are self-sacrificing.
