I'm a big fan of Maynard Keynes. They say his policy is no use anymore because the way markets work is different today. I thought it was a very well-proportioned mix of market and government. The image I have from reading about his ideas is that of the economy as a boiler system needing impetus at times and reducing pressure at others. You must admit that inanimate objects don't have the concept of self-sacrifice. The idea about Jesus was that somebody sentient cared enough to give his life for the sake of humankind. I don't believe it's true and I doubt the logic of the sacrifice but Krauss is being very disingenuous claiming stars are self-sacrificing.

brentan comments on Apr 18, 2019:
I was just thinking earlier today how insightful the people were in the past who perceived that spirit was so much more effective than law. We mostly only know this idea from religion so I think the baby got thrown out with the bathwater. Our society has never been so busy making laws to equalise rights and remove wrongs. I think it's an effort at Utopia through law and I fear it cannot work. But spirit, the inner motivation to live decently and treat others correctly, supercedes the imposition of law. Here's the apostle Paul in Galatians 5: But if ye are led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, heresies, envyings, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they which practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

brentan comments on Apr 17, 2019:
It got complicated with the apostle Paul. He used words that we can't really translate into modern English. All I know is he talked of lots of types of activities that would make you ineligible for salvation. And homosexuals have been scapegoated by Christians so that other lifestyles would not come under condemnation. But they are condemned - greed, adultery, drunkenness etc. We have to really make our minds up about homosexuality. Society had the good sense to mostly mind its own business about homosexuality for a long time but now I think we have to do more than that. Political correctness has driven condemnation underground in many countries but the negativity remains. The issue is always male homosexuality and the anus and attendant feces. The physical abhorrence and moral disgust came to a head when AIDS spread in the 1980s. It seems the health issue has been dealt with thanks to better hygiene but nonetheless there is still a problem with the 'other'. There seems to be a great reluctance to openly discuss the matter so I fear the problem will continue indefinitely.

I wonder are they the secular equivalent of the humans who lived outside the Garden of Eden? I was fascinated that the Christian telling the story of Beowulf believed the monsters that Beowulf had to fight were the descendants of Cain, the first murderer and outcast. There has always been this notion that a less-than-ideal body of humans lived outside Paradise and intermarrying with them created the world of wickedness as we know it.

There is nothing divine about morality; it is a purely human affair.
brentan comments on Apr 17, 2019:
There is an odd message in the apostle Paul's letter to the Galatians where he tells about the fruits of holy spirit: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance - Galatans 5: 22, 23. The context is given in verse 16: This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.  We don't look on these virtues as spiritual. We see them as human virtues. I can't tell whether Paul saw all virtue as the spirit of God manifesting itself, or he thought the Holy Spirit added a layer to human virtue that improved on it or perhaps perfected it.
The fuckening.
