Some things are difficult to learn.
brentan comments on Jan 8, 2019:
It all started with the natural impulse to conceal human limitations. This was the way to move forward. Then the idea is proposed that you are not moving forward, that you are in fact holding yourself back. Now that's a dilemma! Whether to keep concealing the truth or walk open and vulnerable into the future...

brentan comments on Jan 6, 2019:
Here's a snippet from rioonwatch.org: After the ‘Guerra de Canudos’ (Canudos War) in Bahia (1895-1896) government soldiers, who had lived amongst the favela trees, marched to Rio de Janeiro to await their payment. They settled on what is one of Rio’s hills and renamed the hill ‘Morro da Favela’ after the shrubby tree that thrived at the location of their victory against the rebels of Canudos. The government never paid and the soldiers never left and so the first favela came to be.

brentan comments on Jan 6, 2019:
That idea of the divine spirit hovering over an earth that is 'waste and void' is in the first sentence in Genesis too. The idea is developed into a Logos, which seems to be a kind of spirit-driven communication to the world to place order and meaning into it. I don't know if there is a similar idea in Eastern religion but I wouldn't be surprised if the whole ancient world held a common pool of basic ideas that differed only in the details.
Don't let others define you... I was thinking about declaring myself a "Born Again Virgin" , but ...
brentan comments on Jan 5, 2019:
Here's an interesting rant from Parolles against virginity in As You Like It: It is not politic in the commonwealth of nature to preserve virginity. Loss of virginity is rational increase, and there was never virgin got till virginity was first lost. That you were made of is metal to make virgins. Virginity by being once lost may be ten times found; by being ever kept is ever lost. 'Tis too cold a companion. Away with't! 'Tis against the rule of nature. To speak on the part of virginity is to accuse your mothers, which is most infallible disobedience. He that hangs himself is a virgin; virginity murders itself, and should be buried in highways out of all sanctified limit, as a desperate offendress against nature. Virginity breeds mites, much like a cheese, consumes itself to the very paring, and so dies with feeding his own stomach. Besides, virginity is peevish, proud, idle, made of self-love, which is the most inhibited sin in the canon. Keep it not; you cannot choose but lose by't. Out with't! Within ten year it will make itself ten, which is a goodly increase, and the principal itself not much the worse. Away with't! 'Tis a commodity will lose the gloss with lying: the longer kept, the less worth. Off with't while 'tis vendible; answer the time of request. Virginity, like an old courtier, wears her cap out of fashion, richly suited, but unsuitable, just like the brooch and the toothpick, which wear not now. Your date is better in your pie and your porridge than in your cheek; and your virginity, your old virginity, is like one of our French withered pears: it looks ill, it eats drily. Marry, 'tis a withered pear; it was formerly better; marry, yet 'tis a withered pear! Will you anything with it?

brentan comments on Jan 4, 2019:
I think 2019 will be a very interesting year. My guess is that society needs to get a lot worse before it starts getting better. For the time being, I think people will continue to voluntarily isolate themselves from others and think in terms of competition rather than co-operation.

brentan comments on Jan 4, 2019:
My guess is there's a world of people out there who struggle to cope with sometimes never-ending stress. They take prescribed tablets or self-medicate alcohol or drugs. I think this quite a large proportion of society lies somewhere between good and bad mental health.

Do we perceive reality or do we make it up? [thenakedscientists.com]
brentan comments on Jan 4, 2019:
I think we perceive it as an encounter with the Other. Personal analysis might help but it is limited to what the original perception provides for scrutiny. There is an idea called intersubjectivity where it is accepted by the group that shared perceptions of reality can be taken as objective reality.

For success, attitude is as important as ability.....Sir Walter Scott.
brentan comments on Dec 30, 2018:
I think it has a lot to do with 'if at first you don't succeed...' There must, I think, be a lot of people who 'try and try again' and never succeed but the moral might be that you definitely won't succeed unless you struggle through the failures. Someone, from the music industry if I remember rightly, spoke about being an overnight success after thirty years in the business.

I have a great interest in this topic too. I think it's safe to assume we started off in Africa but I don't agree anymore that we moved from Africa and then became farmers and cultured people in the Middle East. I think the route took hundreds of thousands of years, people moved north as far as the ice caps and then when the Ice Age ended, millions died in the resulting floods and the survivors built up their civilisations again much further south. Recently I've been watching Maria Kvilhaug's (Lady of the Labrynth) YouTube videos on the time when the different hominids and the Neanderthals co-existed and interbred.
