I've been delighted to see how many concepts have a word to describe them. One of the common themes for a very long time has been the idea that men are put off rather than attracted to intelligent women. There was a very funny play written about it called 'She Stoops To Conquer' where an intelligent women had to lower herself intellectually to attract a nervous suitor. If there is a word (no, I mean an appropriate descriptive word) for being put off or afraid of intelligent women, it would make a good addition to our vocabulary.

An Irish journalist, Kevin Myers, is a man whose opinions I highly respect. He, along with some other people, refuse to believe that Jewish people were gassed in the concentration camps. He doesn't, of course, refuse to believe that they were killed. Some people equate the two ideas. On the other hand, we have so many reports of the atrocities, including one that I read and highly regard, Victor Frankl's The Search For Meaning. So perhaps even though there is no room for doubt about the murders, there is an issue about the details, and those details are being used as a reason not to believe in the Holocaust.

brentan comments on Nov 6, 2018:
I'm thinking how our recent referendum that removed blasphemy as a crime from our laws has been a cynical waste of time on the part of our politicians. I don't believe Muhammad was a pedophile. I want to say that first. Of course, that is not the point. It's a question of principle. Is it a violation of free speech? Second, there never was complete freedom of speech. Slander has always been an actionable offense. Can you slander a man who is dead for 1400 years? I read a case where the English politician Gladstone was accused of immorality committed before his death and his sons took the accuser to court and won their case. But Gladstone of course was not dead long when it happened, not like Muhammad. Maybe we can only conclude that peace on the streets of Europe was the prime concern of the judges.
United we stand.
brentan comments on Nov 6, 2018:
I think the reason for the great difficulty in uniting is biological, as if the genes do not believe humanity can continuously function and thrive without competition. If this picture is correct, then society is based on that fact and shows it in its competitive hierarchies. The thing that isn't definite is whether the genes are correct, or perhaps better to say, still correct. Maybe it's time to at least try. Oddly enough, that is what religion has been attempting to do since its inception.
Why do I keep doing this too myself? Anyone? Note: I'm also the one who lights the flames.
