I have a question to members of this group.
brentan comments on Mar 2, 2019:
I wondered about it too. At what stage are bones deemed to be simply historical interest? Perhaps I'm asking that question because I more or less accept this is how we learn about the past and it hurts nobody. Then I find out to my surprise that Native Americans aren't seeing it the same way. Are they wrong? Darned if I know what their religious beliefs about the dead and death in general are. I wonder, too, if they see a point in time where human bones are less personal to them.
I streamed Bohemian Rhapsody last night.
brentan comments on Mar 2, 2019:
I read that the movie seemed to be a vehicle for the other members of the band to distance themselves from Mercury's excesses.
So has anyone else run into this?

brentan comments on Mar 1, 2019:
I guess it's that nice sense of belonging, having a support group and having some certainties in life. I think lots of people try to copy that on social media platforms but it might not work as well as the real thing.
See who corrects my post this time.
brentan comments on Mar 1, 2019:
It's similar to Chris Rock explaining the difference between a job and a career. But fuck these people who don't have to suffer boring jobs and unrealised lives telling everyone how it should be. It's like the folk at the top of the Maslow Hierarchy telling everyone they should be able to come up and enjoy the view.
had me fooled.
brentan comments on Mar 1, 2019:
It's terrific. I'll bet you could use one of those tools in Photoshop to change the texture of the ledge to that of the ground. Then I doubt we could still make out the edge and perceive the height.
What's a matter?
brentan comments on Mar 1, 2019:
I didn't know Einstein felt that way about matter. I've recently read a book called The Master and His Emissary by Iain McGilchrist. It's about the brain. He is currently writing a book where he will propose that there is no matter at all - only processes. My guess is he wants to link matter, non-matter and consciousness together and view them as different expressions of processes. I hope he finishes it soon.

brentan comments on Mar 1, 2019:
There is a fascinating section in Don Quixote where he goes down into the cave at Montesinos. It reads like an early expression of psychiatry, where the patient allows all their fears to be expressed in the hope of making sense of them. In Quixote's case, it gave him an insight into how far he had fallen into unreality.

brentan comments on Feb 28, 2019:
It's a really nice thing to be able to think in someone else's language. I'm Irish and have some knowledge of the Irish language. The same with Spanish and this might seem irrelevant, old English. I feel I can put myself a little bit in the shoes of some other people even though I'm separated geographically, culturally and even in time. Just a single example of the interesting things you find out about other people through their language. You can't break your arm in Spanish. To do that would be considered mad. Your arm* is* broken. That was on a Ted talk I watched recently.
The way I see it.
brentan comments on Feb 28, 2019:
It's a pity. It seems to be the nature of the social media beast. It encourages opinion but it really wants agreement. Being lukewarm about things is a fairly safe alternative. Obviously I have no idea what goes on in the background but I suspect there's where the damage is created. I was shocked when I was first told that some groups only want members who voice the same opinions. I never thought anyone would want an echo-chamber but I was very naive about it.. So many do. So I guess we'll have to accept that the ideological divides in the real world are just re-constituted here and there's no avoiding it. I suggest maybe not leaving the forum but hanging around to see what new people might bring.

brentan comments on Feb 25, 2019:
I think hierarchies, like capitalism, bring the cream to the top. From what I've read, hierarchy is the natural order in society and as old as time. It's flaw is not its very existence but the excesses and tyrannies that humans bring to it. Efforts in the past to get rid of hierarchies have resulted in horrors worse than the crimes they set out to end so I think working to moderate hierarchy is the best approach.
