brentan comments on Feb 3, 2019:
Is terrorist the right word? Perhaps if their equivalents on the right are classified that way too. I would use the word criminal but maybe that doesn't describe ideological groups who commit crime. Maybe we could use terrorist because they want to frighten people with criminal violence. And yet the word terrorist seems to carry a more potent meaning in terms of death and violence.

All I ever thought about the San Juan Islands was that they were inhabited by rich people. I know the drummer in Yes lives there anyway. I took the ferry from Seattle to Vancouver and back in the 90s. It was rudimentary but did the job. The view is beautiful if the weather is nice.

I was surprised at how many of the comments seem to think kindness is counter-productive in this situation. Maybe it is and what makes it more confusing is the place social security takes as an alternative to kindness. I wonder in how many circumstances would personal kindness be counter-productive? Maybe all the circumstances social security covers?

I felt it as a huge loss. After all, it's the loss of everlasting life. I'm comforted a little by the new animist thinkers who feel consciousness is not dependent on the brain and continues after death. I think it’s because I’m more analytical while other people bring feelings into the situation more than I do. One of the things I see expressed more often on social media is the encouragement to be kind to yourself. I think it’s a great idea.

17 But Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. 18 And Jael came out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord; turn aside to me; do not be afraid.” So he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug. 19 And he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened ta skin of milk and gave him a drink and covered him. 20 And he said to her, “Stand at the opening of the tent, and if any man comes and asks you, ‘Is anyone here?’ say, ‘No.’ ” 21 But Jael the wife of Heber took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand. Then she went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple until it went down into the ground while he was lying fast asleep from weariness. So he died. - Judges 4.

brentan comments on Feb 1, 2019:
That’s a nice change from all these silly cartoons saying religious people are mad. I think that we developed the ability to create scenarios in our mind so as play out different eventualities in our minds. This means that we wouldn’t die from every bad idea we tried out. This ability to imagine has become more sophisticated through the progress of evolution and gradually was able to create the concept of intangibles like god, heaven etc. I got this idea from one of Jordan Peterson’s videos.

brentan comments on Feb 1, 2019:
I read that this song alludes to the band almost breaking up over the Christian thing going on with two of the member, Bono and The Edge, I think. It seems to be an introspective look at what the obligations of personal Christianity are. In the band's situation, it was the obligation to make things right with the other members of the band. I thought it was a big hit but he says it wasn't so that surprised me. I love that lyric 'have you come to play Jesus to the lepers in your head?' I don't know why he says 'bed' in this video. But it's a wonderful poetic insight into people with such natural flaws in their thinking wanting to play God.

brentan comments on Feb 1, 2019:
One of the main ideas in socialism is the change from private ownership of the means of production to shared ownership. I believe it works well in some instances and co-ops are a good example. One of the real disadvantages in socialism was the idea of equality of outcome (reward) within these shared businesses. The same wage for different types of labour stunted innovation and morale. It also lowered standards in every type of business, manufacturing or service industry. I'm convinced capitalism supplies the incentive to improve but who knows, maybe the co-ops operating these days believe in rewarding different levels of input with different outcomes.

I think the idea of connecting prosperity to virtue came in with Protestantism. I don't know how it developed because scripture connects spirituality with poverty. It might have come about through a contempt for how people lived in Catholic southern Europe and Ireland. They were less industrious and more concerned with the joys of life than the more surly Protestants who had their extremes in Puritan thinking. The doctrine of Joel Osteen is probably the most prominent example of linking virtue and prosperity.
