Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live. ...
brentan comments on Nov 14, 2018:
To be honest, I think death is a bummer. No more notions of eternal life. But to lose the zest for life during the few years we are lucky to get, that is a tragedy.

brentan comments on Nov 13, 2018:
The bastard! I hope you weren't affected too badly. I read somewhere in the past about a guy in a bank who stole all the amounts of customers after the first two decimal points, as in a customer has $3,547. 54789 so he takes the $0.00789 and all these little pilfers, if that's the right noun, added up to a huge amount of money. Maybe you could call them 'micro-pilfers'.

Family is a big part of it too. People have a strong need to belong, especially to family. Then there's those religions that give family members no choice but to shun erring members.
I know many atheists who are more Christian.
brentan comments on Nov 10, 2018:
Sometimes I wonder what life would have been like if people really were Christian. But then I usually think it didn't happen because it can't happen. I wonder will humanism have better luck.

Who was first Odin/Zeus
brentan comments on Nov 10, 2018:
My guess is he was a great leader after the world reached the end of an epoch in the distant past. I'm basing it on a theory by Graham Hancock that the world was inundated with floodwaters from melting ice at the North Pole around 12,000 B.C. Zeus is portrayed as taking over from an older god which could be a great leader prior to the flood. In other words, the cycles of the gods might be a superstitious understanding of the change from one epoch to another.
That's what I mean when I say it.

brentan comments on Nov 9, 2018:
I've been delighted to see how many concepts have a word to describe them. One of the common themes for a very long time has been the idea that men are put off rather than attracted to intelligent women. There was a very funny play written about it called 'She Stoops To Conquer' where an intelligent women had to lower herself intellectually to attract a nervous suitor. If there is a word (no, I mean an appropriate descriptive word) for being put off or afraid of intelligent women, it would make a good addition to our vocabulary.

brentan comments on Nov 9, 2018:
An Irish journalist, Kevin Myers, is a man whose opinions I highly respect. He, along with some other people, refuse to believe that Jewish people were gassed in the concentration camps. He doesn't, of course, refuse to believe that they were killed. Some people equate the two ideas. On the other hand, we have so many reports of the atrocities, including one that I read and highly regard, Victor Frankl's The Search For Meaning. So perhaps even though there is no room for doubt about the murders, there is an issue about the details, and those details are being used as a reason not to believe in the Holocaust.
