Elbow - One Day Like This [youtu.be]
brentan comments on Feb 9, 2019:
I really like that band. I only have the Take and Landing etc.album. That first song about predestined love is a doozy!
Rod Stewart and The Faces.
brentan comments on Feb 9, 2019:
Rod's gritty voice has enhanced many a good song.
I've been told by friends that I'm the most militant atheist they know.
brentan comments on Feb 9, 2019:
I think I'm the most pacifist atheist, agnostic really. I got a lot from religion and I appreciate what religion was trying to achieve. So I've moved on without the bitterness a lot of people (justifiably) feel. I think the self-righteous type still get on my nerves but that's not entirely limited to the religious. Especially nowadays with the attitude of extreme lefties dictating what's true like old-time Puritans.
IT's Carole King's birthday! Posting a full album, as She and it are so meaningful.
brentan comments on Feb 9, 2019:
Wonderful album. She comes across as a lovely woman. When ever I listen to the album, I feel emotionally wiped after. Maybe that's because I'm a man.
"Man is the only animal that blushes, or needs to." -Mark Twain
brentan comments on Feb 9, 2019:
When I think of some of the awful or very stupid things I did in my life, I could wince never mind blush.
Anyone got a problem with this statement / definition? It seems spot on to me...
brentan comments on Feb 9, 2019:
That's it exactly.

Oh gosh, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. I just can't handle alcohol like I used to.
I often wonder how priests guilty of sexual molestation perceive themselves.
brentan comments on Feb 8, 2019:
I think they see their situation like ancient Egyptians entering into the court of Maat who weighed their good deeds against their bad ones. Christian doctrine doesn't allow for that, because salvation is by faith, not be works,
In the UK we have Brexit, which is taking up an obscene amount of time and tax payers money, perhaps...
brentan comments on Feb 8, 2019:
It could be the greatest load of bollocks in both countries. I've more empathy with Britain trying to keep the country British than America trying to keep the country WASP.

brentan comments on Feb 8, 2019:
In all fairness, goat-herders did not write the Old Testament scriptures. The scriptures were conceived and written by educated, pious people who wanted to project meaning into their lives at a time when they were living in exile around the 6th century BCE.
Endless war . . .
brentan comments on Feb 8, 2019:
It's unreal how bad homelessness has become in first-world countries. I can only guess it's down to a widening gap between the upper and lower income groups.
Nina Simone- I wish I knew how it feels to be free (live 1976) [youtube.com]
brentan comments on Feb 8, 2019:
That's Nina who was so angry at the white race that she would insult the white portion of her audience at concerts. I think people understood and stayed to listen to her talent anyway.

Clutch - Emily Dickinson [youtu.be] Emily Dickinson Won't you lay your hair down low?
brentan comments on Feb 8, 2019:
I really enjoyed the sentiment in that song. Emily came across very strait-laced for someone whose family life was full of 'complications' as anyone else's. Here's another song about her written by Duke Special from a poem by Michael Longley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCztMBruLRY

Why is the hard-Left so conservative? - UnHerd
brentan comments on Feb 8, 2019:
It might be because they've taken on the mantle of righteousness that used to belong to conservatives.
No idea whether Einstein actually said this, but interesting nonetheless
brentan comments on Feb 8, 2019:
I guess that means we can tell what kind of soul a person has by what kind of music they listen to.

I think the whole world should have a Global Kindness Day. It might be so surprisingly pleasant that new days could be added gradually.
What do you choose?
brentan comments on Feb 8, 2019:
I think seeking happiness directly is counter-productive, like desperately trying to go to sleep. Maybe we should choose to do things that make us happy as a result of those things. I'm not sure about getting happiness through thinking good things but it might work like meditation.

I read that it's the universe's way of recognising itself. I think religion was the only way to understand it for ages, then psychology and philosophy had a bash at it followed by physics. The latest efforts come from the old pagan animist thinking but they're calling it panpsychism now.

I saw an example of the effort made to fully understand what a person of another opinion is saying. I know it's hardly complete empathy but it's a start in argument. It's called 'steelmanning' and it's an attempt to do the very opposite of strawmanning. Neither of you are allowed to continue the discussion without first relating back to the other person what they have said and get their approval. I saw it used to good effect when Douglas Murray asked Jordan Peterson and Sam Harris to do it in debate with each other.

7 key takeaways from the SOTU speech: 1. Immigration "Congress has 10 days left to pass a bill that will fund our government, protect our homeland and secure our very dangerous southern border." 2. 'Partisan' investigations "An economic miracle is taking place in the United States and the only thing that can stop it are foolish wars, politics or ridiculous partisan investigations." 3. Trade "To build on our incredible economic success, one priority is paramount - reversing decades of calamitous trade policies." 4. Infrastructure "Both parties should be able to unite for a great rebuilding of America's crumbling infrastructure." 5. Healthcare "The next major priority for me, and for all of us, should be to lower the cost of healthcare and prescription drugs and to protect patients with pre-existing conditions." 6. Foreign Policy As we make progress in these negotiations (with Afghan groups), we will be able to reduce our troops' presence and focus on counter-terrorism and we will indeed focus on counter-terrorism. 7. Abortion "To defend the dignity of every person, I am asking the Congress to pass legislation to prohibit the late-term abortion of children who can feel pain in the mother's womb."
