Still shaken up from a bad night terror episode.
brentan comments on Feb 1, 2019:
I remember those from when I was very young. Terror is the right word! I hope you can get some good advice here or by googling. It would be a good thing if it was something simple like diet.
The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.
brentan comments on Feb 1, 2019:
That's a darn good comment. Having that idea of a saviour bringing in New Jerusalem and setting the world right wasn't a threat before we got so industrial. Now we better get moving and do something.

from: Pascal Boyer: "Religion Explained.
brentan comments on Feb 1, 2019:
That’s a nice change from all these silly cartoons saying religious people are mad. I think that we developed the ability to create scenarios in our mind so as play out different eventualities in our minds. This means that we wouldn’t die from every bad idea we tried out. This ability to imagine has become more sophisticated through the progress of evolution and gradually was able to create the concept of intangibles like god, heaven etc. I got this idea from one of Jordan Peterson’s videos.

Bono & The Edge - One (Acoustic) Another "one" I'll be singing tomorrow night.
brentan comments on Feb 1, 2019:
I read that this song alludes to the band almost breaking up over the Christian thing going on with two of the member, Bono and The Edge, I think. It seems to be an introspective look at what the obligations of personal Christianity are. In the band's situation, it was the obligation to make things right with the other members of the band. I thought it was a big hit but he says it wasn't so that surprised me. I love that lyric 'have you come to play Jesus to the lepers in your head?' I don't know why he says 'bed' in this video. But it's a wonderful poetic insight into people with such natural flaws in their thinking wanting to play God.
My first post...be nice.

I was sifting through old FB posts and found this one about the definition of socialism.
brentan comments on Feb 1, 2019:
One of the main ideas in socialism is the change from private ownership of the means of production to shared ownership. I believe it works well in some instances and co-ops are a good example. One of the real disadvantages in socialism was the idea of equality of outcome (reward) within these shared businesses. The same wage for different types of labour stunted innovation and morale. It also lowered standards in every type of business, manufacturing or service industry. I'm convinced capitalism supplies the incentive to improve but who knows, maybe the co-ops operating these days believe in rewarding different levels of input with different outcomes.

Happiness
brentan comments on Jan 31, 2019:
I'm happy because I can do what I love to do. In my case, it's mostly literature. I started a bucket list to read all the classics I never read when I was younger. I'm in a situation now where I can give so much of my time to my 'hobby'. Happiness to me means an inner glow felt from being full of the wonder of the world written down on paper. I'm working my way through Shakespeare's Henry VI trilogy for the second time and have to stop from time to time and shake my head and wonder at the genius of the man. That's happy.

This is my issue with charity. We technically shouldn't need it. Meh.

America really doesn't want people to have health care as a right. It wants the poor to depend on charity from the rich.

brentan comments on Jan 31, 2019:
I think it's a case of the sex organs not corresponding to the gender.
But in nature there's only two genders said the right-wing, nut-job, radio host. ?
brentan comments on Jan 31, 2019:
There's only two sexes, I think. Gender is trickier because people don't always end up with genders that correspond to their sex organs.

brentan comments on Jan 31, 2019:
I think the idea of connecting prosperity to virtue came in with Protestantism. I don't know how it developed because scripture connects spirituality with poverty. It might have come about through a contempt for how people lived in Catholic southern Europe and Ireland. They were less industrious and more concerned with the joys of life than the more surly Protestants who had their extremes in Puritan thinking. The doctrine of Joel Osteen is probably the most prominent example of linking virtue and prosperity.

Is there a legitimate political mechanism to make somebody the interim president and how is it decided who becomes that person? Do you need an interim president if a president has been voted in? Are you justified in having an interim president if you feel the vote was rigged? What the heck is the UK doing giving Venezuelan money to Guaido?
