I think one big issue nobody gets into is the realisation that we are animals and animal’s genitals are often not such a pretty picture. I wonder might the attractiveness of the face and body generally be the carrot that leads people on to the business area. Like in modelling, porn is placing the most attractive people in front of us as the bar to reach. The trouble is, men don’t seem to be asked to modify their private parts unless maybe getting rid of pubic hair.

I'm reading a book at the moment that says schitzophrenia, autism and especially homosexuality have to do with brain lateralisation, that is, how the two sides of the brain exercise their abilities to affect each other. If true, I think it would be difficult to think of homosexuality as immoral, or at least that the desire is immoral.

As for the point of a redeemer, the idea was that the redeemer would give an imperfect person the status of a perfect person if that person did everything in their power to be like him. You, too, have heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. brentan comments on Nov 23, 2018:
I think god can only manifest itself in interaction with us. Some people say it provided a home and food so that's proof. There is so much written about contact with the divine in early history but none now. I'm convinced it was all wishful thinking and forgivable ignorance but it must be fairly obvious now that if there is a god, it doesn't intervene in human affairs at all.

brentan comments on Nov 23, 2018:
Here’s something on the Christian attitude to law. The apostle Paul wrote to the Romans to tell them to be in subjection to secular law (Romans 13:1 etc.) This is modified by Acts 5:28, 29): Every person must be subject to the governing authorities, for no authority exists except by God's permission. The existing authorities have been established by God, so that whoever resists the authorities opposes what God has established, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. He said, "We gave you strict orders not to teach in his name, didn't we? Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to bring this man's blood on us!" But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men. So the guy followed the Christian imperative in Mark 16:15: Then he told them, "As you go into all the world, proclaim the gospel to everyone.

The hypothesis would fall apart if the mind is not housed in the brain. That would place consciousness outside the body and the brain would be a tool to access and process thoughts, then storing them at this external location. It may well be that when we die, our processor dies but it wouldn't matter since we would be existing on the same plane as consciousness.

brentan comments on Nov 22, 2018:
Is it that the world is less or we are less so the world isn't so open to us? I can't imagine what's it's like to have a paternal role model who is a powerhouse in any way. I've seen a lot of films where strong fathers destroy their sons. There were also stories about sons who became strong men because their fathers were weak. Anyway, I think it must have been very difficult to be a regular human being living in the shadow of someone extra-ordinary. I'll leave that paragraph alone in case it means something to someone but re-reading your post, I think I misunderstood. Could you elaborate a little?

Holidays are a little bit sad. Not miserable, just kind of sad. Does anyone else feel this way?
brentan comments on Nov 20, 2018:
Oh gosh yes. It's all the sentiments about brotherly love and happy families that makes the season worse for people who aren't in a position to enjoy such things. But how real is it? I suspect that it's great for young families whose children make the magic real through their unquestioning enthusiasm for the occasion. My adult self survives the season in the knowledge that it's mostly an illusion but my inner child yearns for the time of innocence that loved Christmas.

I went to live in Seattle in the early 90s and was surprised to see how their idea of their lousy local weather had even become memes on T-shirts - 'Seattle Rainy Season - Jan 1 to Dec 31'. I never found this quite true. I thought their summers were terrific and their winters more extreme and changeable than our permanent gloom.
