brentan comments on Oct 11, 2018:
I think America was a melting pot of cultures bringing their linguistic idiosyncrasies to the table. Webster may well have been trying to reduce those differences to a minimum while also doing his very best to use specific words for different things, such as holidays and vacation.

New sex scandal.
brentan comments on Oct 10, 2018:
I'm so pleased to see penalties imposed that will make these organisations re-think their policies. I had read years ago that that the Watchtower HQ had the names of thousands of abusers in their files but refused to hand them over. Their two witness rule should not subvert secular justice. If the law demands that sexual accusations belong in the criminal justice system, the police would have the files without depending on the goodwill (demonstrated to be nil) of religious organisations.

brentan comments on Oct 10, 2018:
Being raised a Catholic, I think it's fair to say that in general, no training is given to children about living a virtuous life. In my day, the subject was never discussed. Our perception of the relationship between the sexes was that women protected their virginity at all costs so it was the business of a man to find a way past the obstructions.

I saw it too. I was very pleased with the effort they put in to describe the JW life. I'm sure it must be very difficult for 'normal' people to grasp the awful truth of the religion as a way of life. The actress who played the believing mum was terrific, while not taking away from the professionalism of everyone involved.

Narcissistic Sociopath Symptoms
brentan comments on Oct 9, 2018:
I think many Christians think all these people die because they can't call on God for help because they don't believe in the Christian God, or if they do, they call on the wrong interpretation of the Christian god. If you don't fall into those categories 'time and unforeseen occurrence fall them all' (Ecclesiastes 9:11) so it's just bad luck.
This really isn't offensive to any of us, but probably is to believers.

brentan comments on Oct 8, 2018:
Tolle offers a calm place in a storm. I enjoy his teachings. The question is how to get the balance right in a world demanding you fit in so as get your basic human needs. It's an even tougher question when you have a family. The Christian proposal to solve that problem was to 'seek God's Kingdom first and then all other things will be added to you'. I don't think that claim has ever been shown to be true. So caution is needed if a person decides to prioritise their spiritual dimension. I think it is worth the effort but living an alternative life has to come at a cost.

Shakespeare and Cervantes lived during the same period - mid 1500s to early 1600s. The old feudal values were dying and Cerantes captured it so well in this story of a man who wouldn't move on. Shakespeare captured it in the earl of Essex in Richard II and his opposite in Henry IV, Falstaff the man with no honour. Wonderful song!

I dealt with the same situation and now deal with the fallout. As far as I can tell, the suspicious mind can't allow for the bisexual to have any honour, integrity or other values that heterosexuals are credited with free gratis. I can't give an answer to a young person because simple old age put me in a position where I can afford not to care about other people's opinions anymore. I wish you well and hop you find the person you deserve.

brentan comments on Oct 6, 2018:
I tend to judge moral issues by going back to cave-dwelling times and asking what habits were developed to ensure the success of a tribe. I think successful habits were later converted to morals and linked to approval by the gods and then a ticket to heaven. We don't have to go far back in history to see polygamy justified as a way to help a tribe survive. It would be interesting to know if our modern societies could survive the total breakdown of the old habits.

I'm guessing you're dealing with the condemnation of the fundies versus the decency of the liberal notion of Christianity. And in all fairness, the liberal notion ignores some very restrictive rules about sex. I don't know what it's like living in Texas, or how attached to Christianity you are in your heart, but in my ignorance I can't help concluding that homosexuality and Christianity make poor bedfellows and atheism with humanist values (which are similar in many ways) would be the best move in the long run.

brentan comments on Oct 5, 2018:
I can’t help concluding that we’re teasing out when to play it carefully and when to start the revolution. History seems to show that no liberties are given without a fight. There are other factors to consider too. Ghandi proved the effectiveness of peaceful non-cooperation and MLK followed suit. Then we need to consider whether white men really are being victimised at all. Or women. Or black people, Jews, Muslims, the handicapped, transgender – the list is endless. As an Irishman, I’m particularly incensed at the treatment of the Irish globally and I am actively involved in starting a revolution from my barstool. But seriously, should we discuss whether white men really have a grievance in our comfortable Western world?

So only one death was needed.
