As the Earth travels a 1000 miles an hour creating our present we thrive because of what was left ...

It was very insightful of our ancestors to look to the skies for meaning and not time.

How much loneliness causes depression and anxiety.
brentan comments on Aug 13, 2018:
I see it as a result of loss of community. The spirit of the age seems to centre on the individual - the age of the smartphone, headphones, selfies. It's a bit shocking to think cave-dwellers might have had better sense of community than we do. The only thing that I think can save a person from the effects of loneliness is a sense of fulfilment in themselves. In other words, how much of worth can they draw from themselves. I would fear for people whose sense of worth was entirely external, based perhaps on a skill that is no longer required or taken over by younger people.

I wrote this in response to those that ask me "what if science is wrong?
brentan comments on Aug 12, 2018:
I think we need science and spirituality. I definitely think we should dump the Judeo-Christian patriarchal god and go for something more like Buddhism. Maybe use Buddhism to wean us away from religion and just think on a cosmic level instead of focusing on salvation. I see my society hurting because it has abandoned the old beliefs and left stumbling around in the dark. I think they are stumbling around in the dark looking for meaning but no new meaning has been articulated yet that has the authority religion used to have.

Man, this depression is getting to me.
brentan comments on Aug 12, 2018:
I wish you well. I've experienced it, along with a failed suicide attempt, which I've always been grateful was a failure. All I know, from my own case, is that it can go. Medical knowledge is building all the time. I can't recommend exercise highly enough. Walking is so good for the mind as well as the body. But who wants to put in the effort when they're depressed? Please force yourself to help yourself. If you can, take a look at Jordon Peterson's 12 Rules For Life, Rule 2, 'Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping'.

It is an appalling show of incompetence and must thoroughly destroy any confidence the public would hope to have in their leaders. If it's any consolation, the only thing that makes British politicians look more incompetent than some of their counterparts everywhere else is the complexity of their problem and the time limit imposed to resolve it.

Is empathy the root of human morality ?
brentan comments on Aug 11, 2018:
I think it began as a transaction which was not just an agreement to support each other in need, but also as an investment in the future in the sense of insurance against need. If so, that's a hell of a concept for a cave-dweller to ideate. It's astonishing to think how that idea, which I think is akin to barter, reached its apotheosis over time in the Christian notion of a man-god investing in his own death to buy himself a better position in heaven and support and save all mankind in the process.

Why do humans form friendships?
brentan comments on Aug 11, 2018:
Those are great questions. I had an idealistic understanding of friendship. Maybe like blood-brothers. A bond, while not as strong as an ideal loyalty in marriage, but quite strong. If those days ever existed, I think they are gone. Friendship might simply reduce (or already has) into groups who use each other for recreation without bonds, to avoid solitary entertainment.

I guess he means you don’t need to talk about Satan or man’s fall from grace to explain cruelty. It’s just man’s nature to be cruel or kind, and cruel and kind depending on mood, circumstance etc. Then again, I suppose he might well have thought that man is God’s creation without believing in Satan or the fall but that’s a bit a la carte.

brentan comments on Aug 8, 2018:
I think it is an inate feature of the cosmos that is accessed by the human brain and is the repository for every thought that came into the mind of man since time began. As our mind processes thoughts taken in from the cosmos, the processed thoughts go back out there for storage.

I see their point and yet I can't help but argue that pastors were always behaving this way.
