Hi. I'm real close to finishing Hitchens' God Is Not Great. I'm not sure what you mean by 'putting things in perspective'. Do you mean you find what these guys are saying very troubling?
What do you do on Sundays?
brentan comments on Aug 19, 2018:
I try to make sure I have something to do on Sundays. It must be the most incorrectly named day in Ireland. It is just about never sunny. It is a dull, depressing day. I'm glad when Monday comes and the world is busy again. I don't want to join them, though. I just want to use the facilities (no, not the toilets, I mean the library, café, etc.)
road poem On the land where I live lies the traces of an old road.

All roads now lead from the suburbs to the malls. I particularly liked 'the deeds held by thickets and hardwoods'.
The Pope Francis mythology that he is somehow "different" is hogwash.
brentan comments on Aug 19, 2018:
Yes, only secular law can stop them. The Roman Catholic Church has used the confessional as a front to avoid taking crime to law. The Jehovah's Witness have used the two-witness rule to the same effect (Deuteronomy 19:15; Matthew 18:15-17). While the spirit of law is the pursuit of justice, church law is used to subvert it. But I think (and hope) their time is up.

brentan comments on Aug 19, 2018:
God seems to take an entirely different perspective on the relationship between young people and clergy: Later, Elisha left there to go up to Bethel, and as he was traveling along the road, some insignificant young men came from the city and started mocking him. They told him, "Get on up, baldy! Get on up, baldy!" He looked behind him, took note of the young men, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. Suddenly two female bears emerged from the woods and mauled forty-two of the young men. 2 Kings 2:23, 24.

Here's another observation to add to the equation: I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. - Ecclesiastes 9:11. I think the difference between the two is that one speaks from the perspective of all life over a very long period and the other speaks of human life in a shorter period. One way or the other, it pays to be able to adapt.

brentan comments on Aug 18, 2018:
I think abuses are unavoidable in hierarchical organisations. Power corrupts, we know. There is so often a problem with cliques. It's a big ask that people act so principled that they put the rules for fairness above their own wishes every time. But I don't think that means be silent about it. Hierarchies need criticism to keep some kind of order or they'll just get worse.

I'm not so horrified as some people are about the allusion to cannabilism. I think Jesus explained the notion of what his body and blood signified in scripture. Blood had been the symbol of life since the time of Noah, never mind Moses and his law. Bread, too, had a long history of being interpreted as the food of God, e.g. manna in the wilderness. The Eucharist sacrament is the re-presentation of the Passover meal, when the practice was initiated. It probably should be an annual affair, like it is for the Jehovah's Witnesses, but nobody knows for sure.

brentan comments on Aug 17, 2018:
Applying points according to quality would be very subjective. Time-consuming too, I think. Maybe it's best just to ignore it and get on with the discussions. I read that the T-shirts can be bought at any level now. I'm also not certain that the levels on the site are a reflection of success as a person. They might be indirectly proportional to each other.

brentan comments on Aug 15, 2018:
When we began college, we got an excellent talk from the governer of Dublin's old prison, Mountjoy Jail. He focussed our minds on the good luck we enjoyed compared to those in our age group who were inmates of the prison. Looking back on it now, I think it was a fight against arrogance. It was an unwinnable fight against the forces of a four year degree that students took as a sign of superiority. I really appreciated this man's fellow-feeling for the check-out worker. I liked the notion that we will all end up worshipping something so use your ability to think to worship something worthwhile.

[youtu.be] the real deal. What a song
brentan comments on Aug 14, 2018:
Here's a similar idea from rural Ireland several decades ago: O stony grey soil of Monaghan The laugh from my love you thieved; You took the gay child of my passion And gave me your clod-conceived. You clogged the feet of my boyhood And I believed that my stumble Had the poise and stride of Apollo And his voice my thick tongued mumble. You told me the plough was immortal! O green-life conquering plough! The mandril stained, your coulter blunted In the smooth lea-field of my brow. You sang on steaming dunghills A song of cowards' brood, You perfumed my clothes with weasel itch, You fed me on swinish food You flung a ditch on my vision Of beauty, love and truth. O stony grey soil of Monaghan You burgled my bank of youth! Lost the long hours of pleasure All the women that love young men. O can I stilll stroke the monster's back Or write with unpoisoned pen His name in these lonely verses Or mention the dark fields where The first gay flight of my lyric Got caught in a peasant's prayer. Mullahinsa, Drummeril, Black Shanco- Wherever I turn I see In the stony grey soil of Monaghan Dead loves that were born for me. - Stony Grey Soil by Patrick Kavanagh

How much loneliness causes depression and anxiety.
brentan comments on Aug 13, 2018:
I see it as a result of loss of community. The spirit of the age seems to centre on the individual - the age of the smartphone, headphones, selfies. It's a bit shocking to think cave-dwellers might have had better sense of community than we do. The only thing that I think can save a person from the effects of loneliness is a sense of fulfilment in themselves. In other words, how much of worth can they draw from themselves. I would fear for people whose sense of worth was entirely external, based perhaps on a skill that is no longer required or taken over by younger people.

brentan comments on Aug 12, 2018:
I think we need science and spirituality. I definitely think we should dump the Judeo-Christian patriarchal god and go for something more like Buddhism. Maybe use Buddhism to wean us away from religion and just think on a cosmic level instead of focusing on salvation. I see my society hurting because it has abandoned the old beliefs and left stumbling around in the dark. I think they are stumbling around in the dark looking for meaning but no new meaning has been articulated yet that has the authority religion used to have.

brentan comments on Aug 11, 2018:
I think it began as a transaction which was not just an agreement to support each other in need, but also as an investment in the future in the sense of insurance against need. If so, that's a hell of a concept for a cave-dweller to ideate. It's astonishing to think how that idea, which I think is akin to barter, reached its apotheosis over time in the Christian notion of a man-god investing in his own death to buy himself a better position in heaven and support and save all mankind in the process.

Why do humans form friendships?
brentan comments on Aug 11, 2018:
Those are great questions. I had an idealistic understanding of friendship. Maybe like blood-brothers. A bond, while not as strong as an ideal loyalty in marriage, but quite strong. If those days ever existed, I think they are gone. Friendship might simply reduce (or already has) into groups who use each other for recreation without bonds, to avoid solitary entertainment.
