That's a seriously well-made poem. I got the sense of the young girl's death, your death and my own.
New Atheism, Worse Than You Think
brentan comments on Jul 31, 2018:
Could it be a new church for belief in science - whites only, please! With a copy of The Selfish Gene in one hand and a firearm in the other, we'll track down out and extirpate the unprivileged, ignorant believers!

brentan comments on Jul 31, 2018:
That's interesting. He's a kind of gay Jesus. I have always thought that Jesus was portrayed throughout history as a gay guy on a cross. Maybe that's because the painters were gay.

brentan comments on Jul 31, 2018:
Was that Checkov's opinion that if a prop was present on the stage, it must be used? If only the Lances of this world (and I count myself among them) realised that in life, there can always be a new act, a new scene to be experienced if you don't close down the play.
Hi All.
brentan comments on Jul 31, 2018:
Super poem. I wonder how one finds the music, or perhaps the harmony, in such grey situations. Would a god, looking down simultaneously on both the good and the bad in this world, think it's all good, by some kind of divine rationalisation?

brentan comments on Jul 30, 2018:
Such a difficult question. What was the Prime Mover? Did the universe need one? Were the Anunnaki the aliens who travelled to earth and created people to do their work for them? My belief is the universe always existed. I think that is what we can't get our heads around. The question has been changed into believers trying to get their heads around God always existing.
I do not understand why this country thinks Socialism is so bad.
brentan comments on Jul 30, 2018:
I thought social democracy with Keynesian economics was an ideal compromise in society. I hear that that economic model won't work in today's free-market economy.

....and liberty for all. The freedom to buy a gay cake. The freedom to refuse to add a message to the cake that goes against your conscience. This reminds me of how better it is to solve marital disputes without lawyers. In a similar vein, it would help to resolve differences without support organisations. Compromise is key.

An unconsidered life is not one worth living, Socrates said. I wonder is he right? And thinking constantly about life can be downer if it's not balanced with more immediate needs. Work can be healthy that way, if it's not one of those jobs better suited to a robot. I don't work anymore so I find things like cooking a great escape from deep thinking.

I wonder about the connection of spirituality and reincarnation with nature?
brentan comments on Jul 29, 2018:
Me too. I think we might become part of cosmic consciousness when we die but I doubt if it is in any unified form. I think reincarnation might just the rebirth of sundry old elements that come from different entities that had different forms of consciousness at different times in history.

brentan comments on Jul 28, 2018:
The Western concept of human dignity comes from our Judeo-Christian culture, which was faith in a certain god and the doctrinal belief that man was made in the image of god. It is a tremendous concept, a belief that elevates imperfect man to such a high status.

There is, I think, a moral imperative swelling up that will eventually swamp the pharmaceutical industry's monopoly on medication. The curious thing is that the illnesses best served by cannabis derivatives are not alternatives to mainstream medicine. Mainstream medicine has nothing to offer. I hope the law changes very fast everywhere to put an end to unnecessary suffering.

I recommend this book.
brentan comments on Jul 28, 2018:
It's a very gritty book. There's lots of ugliness in it, as it reflects much of human life, which has been described in the past as 'nasty, brutish and short'. To its credit, there is much beauty in it too, from the psalms, the Song of Solomon, King Solomon's dedication prayer in the temple and the apostle Paul's aspirational letters.

brentan comments on Jul 27, 2018:
I watched a beautiful and very sad movie yesterday called Goodbye Christopher Robin. It's about the creation of the Winnie-the-Pooh stories but it is also about England after WW2. A trip down memory lane might be medicinal. England seems to be suffering the same malaise as many other countries, including my own. I put it down to a loss of spirituality, having tossed away religion and replacing it with nothing but love of money. While I'm sorry for immigrants, I honestly feel uncontrolled immigration will rob England of its culture. Right now, I can't think of any other alternative to religion than culture.

brentan comments on Jul 27, 2018:
Peterson believes that we have got our morals and values from the Judeo-Christian tradition. In my case, he is definitely correct. In the discussion with Matt Dillahunty, Peterson claimed that genuine atheists would all become like Rashkolnikov in Crime and Punishment. There is no reason to believe that at present, even though I perceive an animal nature coming to the fore in my own country since the loss of faith in Catholicism.
It does seem so
brentan comments on Jul 27, 2018:
Can you really picture people sitting down around a table at a conference and actually saying this? It would involve mentalities that are cynical and depraved to an extreme degree. Or perhaps they see the multitudes as ignorant masses that need to be controlled for their own good and the good of the world.

brentan comments on Jul 26, 2018:
I can't help thinking you are calculating equalities in mathematical terms. Maybe balance should be thought of in terms of male and female, yin and yang, where opposites are complimentary rather than mathematically equal. The yin and yang idea can be extended to encompass chaos and order, where chaos is the constant introduction of new things into the world and order is the cultures developed to put order on them.

Hooray for identity politics! It's not just a way to simplify things. You can belong, and that's a big plus in a lonely world. And you can blame the 'other' for everything wrong, sometimes just venting on social media and other times you can run someone over in your car. I'm not happy that the only meaning in life is the meaning I put into it. But I must be realistic and find meaning however short-lived it must be. And I do.

The writer Dostoevsky escaped a firing squad by the skin of his teeth, being lined up and ready to be shot. He explains the horror of capital punishment, and why it is more savage than ordinary killing, in his book The Idiot. I won't paste the text of this section of the book because it's too long but it can be read here: http://www.godandculture.com/blog/dostoevsky-on-capital-punishment
