Optimally I'd be working as a software QA analyst and technical writer, but cheap offshore labor has made that difficult to find lately. So at present I work as a science demonstrator and field trip leader for a children's museum. I'm an avid bicycle rider and regularly go for 40-70 mile rides, and other hobbies include astronomy, magic, day hikes, swimming, and plotting to take over the world and fix everything wrong with it. Politically I'm very liberal and oppose everything Trump stands for. On a more personal level, I enjoy helping people, teaching people new things, and trying new things and foods.

There's two that I won't eat: coffee and lettuse (because I have no idea what lettuse is - it sounds like some sort of substitute for lettuce.) There's three that I avoid whenever I have the opportunity: turkey, tofu, and brussels sprouts.

I really wish my company stood behind me. Just a couple weeks ago they threw me under the bus because a customer, that had complained about me doing something my manager asked me to do, completely misunderstood something I said to them in an attempt to ameliorate the situation. So I get a disciplinary action in my file and cannot be considered for any promotional opportunities for the next 6 months. Even though I didn't say what they were complaining about. They should have realized that she was a bit unhinged when she accused me of being a pedophile for taking pictures of kids in the lunch space, after the manager explained to her that he personally had asked me to get the pictures, and gave me permission to have my phone on me (which isn't allowed normally). The reason for the pictures was to show the donors that had paid for upgrades to that room, so they'd know that their donation was used productively. But evidently this school's chaperone thinks that I have a fetish for kids eating pizza while sitting at a table.

Seaweed pouches will replace thousands of plastic bottles at the London marathon.
chilehead9 comments on May 1, 2019:
I don't know if the alginate pouches really have much of a shelf life, so there's not much chance of them replacing all that much of what we use plastic water bottles for. Also, since the outer layer is edible, you end up eating any contamination that gets on the outside of them. I think we'll get more results out of switching people to using reusable bottles rather than disposable ones. Since my hobby is bicycling, I have and end up carrying a Polar Bottle everywhere with me anyway. There's a few local restaurants that don't even charge me for drinks, since I use my bottle instead of their paper cups - so there's less stuff for them to carry to the dumpster at the end of the day, and less cups heading for the landfill.

chilehead9 comments on Jul 29, 2018:
Were I in your place, I'd be inclined to believe his story about the phone - once. I was really late in letting a cell phone into my life (I was 35), so I don't really think I'm as attached to their use as most people are. But still, the idea of going 12 hours straight without having my phone at my side (while not having the person of my dreams at that same side) makes me uncomfortable. That's how I keep in contact with my work, with my family, with job prospects, etc. So the idea of someone going two days without checking their phone, especially when they're about to go out of town and they have social plans still being arranged... is harder to believe. But, being a guy, I am one of the poster children for being dense on subtle social and interpersonal clues. So my advice is based on how I want people to behave in their dealings with me, your mileage may vary: be blunt. Call him up and say, "I don't know if I'm being paranoid or if there's something I should have picked up on, but I'm a little confused right now. I still think we had a great time the other night(s) and I'm into the idea of seeing more of you, but you seem a bit distant and withdrawn. If you've changed your mind, just let me know and we can go our separate ways with no hard feelings. Otherwise, if you still want to to build on what we've started, bring me up to speed on what your thoughts are." With phrasing going something like that, there's no downside for him to just tell you the truth, regardless of which way he's leaning - and save both of you some time. Good luck.

Sexuality is a hang up that we have been taught from the beginning, hide.
chilehead9 comments on Oct 14, 2018:
Well, we've had these hang ups for quite a few centuries now. At one point, kids learned about sex by watching the adults around them doing it in common areas. But religious types realized that by harnessing people's desire for love and sex, they could force people to do whatever they wanted - so they lock it up behind their ceremonies and requirements (tithings and the like), and tell people it's evil and bad for everyone UNLESS they get approval from the invisible guy in the sky for it. Think about it - if you say the phrase "naughty thoughts", everyone comes to the conclusion you're referring to sex. Not stealing or hitting someone. The one thing that virtually everyone on the planet wants (I don't want to demean the asexuals, but I'm not sure they aren't that way as a reaction to the way our societies treat sex.) So the act of loving, of giving pleasure to the person (or people) you love the most in this world, the act that creates life is universally associated with being "naughty" - of doing "bad" things that we ought not do. Look at American television - it is impossible to get two people lovingly having sex onto television, yet there's no time of the day where it's not possible to find realistic depictions of one or more people hatefully killing another person. And people actually admire the person doing the killing half the time. Part of me wants to say that a sizeable chunk of the problems we have with sexuality are the result of dealing with pregnancy and STIs,but the more I think about it, the more I must conclude that 90% of it is just the polluting influence of religion.

Would you consider a serious relationship with a porn star, hooker, or stripper?
chilehead9 comments on Oct 25, 2018:
That's a difficult question. A simple yes or no feels like I'd be doing the question a disservice. I've always told myself and others that how many people they've been with in the past was immaterial to me - what's important is that they choose to be with me and what they do while they're with me. So now the software QA person in me is really surprised that I didn't consider this edge/extreme value test case (but then again, I was married when I moved into that profession, and honestly thought I'd never be looking to start another intimate relationship in my lifetime.) It would be a challenging relationship, to be sure. I really would like to think that I'm above the petty jealousy issues that a lot of other men seem to be obsessed with, and I think that I could obviate that by having a long and deep discussion with her to make sure that A) the decision to retire from the profession was their choice (not doing it only because I require it, or because a disease or other physical condition makes it impractical/impracticable, or not because another person made her leave or flee the profession), and B) she understands that being with me means that returning to that kind of profession would be an instant end to the relationship. Hard stop, no wiggle room there. By this part of the novel you see me writing here, it should be obvious that I would consider it - though I'd be a bit more diligent in applying my dating screening questions. I'm not oblivious to the range of personality traits and behavior disorders that are commonly associated with these professions (associated in the clinical sense, as well as in the "guilt by association" sense). On the plus side, I'd be flattered that with that range of experience, they really did believe that they'll be happy with me being their last partner ever, and that they'd likely have a really broad range of things they'd want to do with me that would never really occur to me. (then again, they could have specialized in very vanilla or very inhibited areas of the profession, so who knows?). I don't think that there would be any problems or hangups on their part with knowing what they want in the bedroom, or with telling me the best ways to satisfy them. There's a lot of people out there that have been inhibited in that sense, and I've dated people that were adamant that they've never even seriously considered satisfying themselves when they were single/alone. It's hard to please someone that's resistant to exploring how their own body works. If I'm what they really want, and they agree with what I want in a relationship, I'd make a sincere good-faith effort to make it work.

What’s the worst or most boring job you’ve ever had?

Worst job was working for a timeshare company, telephoning people that had entered their contest to tell them that they'd won something. From the description, you'd think that the people I was calling would be pleasant. Nothing could be further from the truth. I call them, remind them that they filled out a contest entry form, and that they had won something - they had only to show up, listen to a 30-60 minute sales presentation, and then pull an envelope out of a bucket to determine which of the five available prizes were theirs. The level of hate that was directed at me during each and every call was stomach-turning. I think I lasted all of three days there.

chilehead9 comments on Aug 18, 2019:
I'm single because my career fell apart, and the jobs I'm doing now to get by are only doing that - allowing me to get by. Half the profiles I see on dating sites say, without even paraphrasing, "no broke ass losers". It's hard to start something with someone when I'm worried if I'll still be able to eat more than once a day on average and still afford rent - even after the tiny cost savings of having a roommate. And having a roommate is also an obstacle to forming relationships with others. I still set up dates and go out, and everyone politely declines or just suddenly stops responding. Though I did get a text a few hours ago from someone that ghosted me two and a half months ago after three dates that were all promising and ended positively.

I try to get all the stuff that would a hard stop for some people out in the open quickly - if someone is going to have a problem with something that is that big a part of who I am, I'd rather that be found out as early as possible, not 5-10 dates down the line.

chilehead9 comments on Jul 31, 2018:
There was a Reddit user who analyzed Trump's speech patterns pretty well about two months ago - his analysis made quite an impression on me, even though he has since deleted his comment (it even made the bestof subreddit). The gist of it was that it seems that Trump is unable to talk about any subject in objective terms at all. Every time he describes something, he has to include how it relates to him. He cannot say "that tree over there," but instead must say "that beautiful tree" - including his opinion on it. He once recounted how an 80 year old man fell and was injured during one of Trump's events at one of his properties, and he was going on about the "beautiful marble floor" and how it was getting covered in "all this disgusting blood". Even when talking about people, he's got to include something about how he perceives their relationship to him - it's "crooked" this person, or "very fine" that person. It all ties back in to the narcissistic nature of his personality - there's no one in the universe nearly as important as him as far as he's concerned, so everything and everyone only has value by way of how he sees them. And he has no problem with lying to people, since they are only worth anything if he can get them to serve his needs - their feelings, needs, and desires are immaterial. It does dovetail nicely with the way that this guy summarizes his behavior as erratic, impulsive, and reactive. The part about being without principle or direction only makes sense when you don't know from where his principle and direction is coming from.
Good morning everyone.

What if you are wrong and there IS a god
chilehead9 comments on Nov 13, 2018:
I'd want nothing to do with the sadistic and irrational bastard. Mostly that's in the case of the Abrahamic god being the one we are hypothesizing to be real. I won't cover if it's Marduk, Ganesh, Mithra, Ra, Odin, Jupiter, or any of the thousands of others that man has also invented, just because I'm less familiar with their mythologies than I am with the Christian mythology. His offer to save us from eternal torture in a place of his creation smacks of narcissism and a truly diseased pattern of thought. No loving god would have created a place like that, nor would he insist on torturing people eternally for decisions made in an absolute vacuum of evidence to base those decisions on. Nor for the "crime" of taking his name in vain, or getting some work done on a particular day of the week. Allowing himself to get killed "for us" isn't really much of a sacrifice if he knows that he's god and he is going to come back to life after a couple days. Since what they are offering you is a shortened version of Pascal's Wager, the most common response is that if there IS a god, there's no real way to know which one - the evidence supporting the existence of any one god is exactly as convincing as the evidence supporting every single one of the thousands of other gods: some kooky people wrote down some stories about a really powerful being that is in charge of some or all aspects of reality. They can't all be right, since the overwhelming majority of them are mutually exclusive, so the better conclusion is that none of them are right. What proof do you have that Odin is not the one true god? Whatever reason you can come up with is an equally good reason for me not believing in your god. If I've got to believe in something over a god, I'll pick reality - It's the only thing we know is there.

chilehead9 comments on Jun 30, 2018:
If you mean by publicly identifying as such, it was after my wife ran off with one of our friends. I didn't think there was any remaining benefit to putting up with the flawed arguments, or of "going along to get along". If you mean by internally recognizing that I didn't believe and was no longer trying to deceive myself into believing, it was a few years earlier. I had been trying to build some logical support for my continued belief to strengthen it, and each attempt led me closer to concluding that it was unsupportable at all.

chilehead9 comments on Sep 26, 2018:
I know it sounds like the No True Scotsman argument, but I lean towards the idea that "regressive leftists" aren't really invested in the left hand side ideals even on the same scale as they are on whatever regressive agenda they're supporting, but by standing in the crowd with those on the left makes them feel better about themselves and gives them the illusion that more people support their regressive agenda.
The EU Copyright Directive will, it seems, become law over the next few years, in Europe.
chilehead9 comments on Mar 30, 2019:
Most software-related companies realize that there is no way to make web sites compliant with the proposed law - it's technically impossible to have a validation system to confirm the copyright ownership and compliance of everything posted, and no one can hire enough human employees to verify the content, either. This law will basically force most of the sites on the Internet to just block all the IP addresses that resolve to EU nations. But try and talk sense to politicians who are getting dump trucks full of money from RIAA/ MAFIAA -like organizations, and you'll quickly see that little things like feasibility and sense carry no weight. MAFIAA = Music And Film Industry Association of America. Not an actual singular entity, but an umbrella term to encompass the trade groups that are most often guilty of pushing false narratives to restrict people's rights in order to boost their profits (that are mainly declining because of lower-quality products).

The opposites can help, but they're not necessary. I reject the notion that you need to experience one thing before you can appreciate its opposite. Also, I'm both beautiful and perfect - it's the Universe I live in that is deficient.
I dont like kissing. It feels and looks stupid. Anyone else feel this way?
chilehead9 comments on Apr 25, 2019:
It really, really depends on how well you sync up with the person you're doing it with. When it works, it's so amazing that an hour of it feels like a few minutes. When you're not in sync with how the other person kisses, but you work on all other levels... it's like me trying to dance: it starts out fine, but you suddenly find yourself not having the slightest clue what to do next or how to avoid something that looks like a theater sword fight.
Since these two gents are not often go on the "general forum" I posted it on here, ahmmm its holiday...

You realize you're threatening me with something that doesn't exist, don't you? You might as well threaten to punch me in the aura and poke out my chakras. Then again, if your Hell and Heaven did exist, I can't think of a torture that would be worse than being surrounded by people like you.

I wish you all the luck in the world for your search - I've been very underemployed for the last 3 years now. I lost my last two jobs in my field due to offshoring, and it's been impossible to even get interviews as a software QA analyst, even with more than a decade of experience. There's just too many people coming over from Ukraine, Pakistan, or India that are willing to work for close to minimum wage, or will work from those countries for half of even that. And a lot of the companies that do have positions also want a long list of very specific skill sets that tell me they already have someone in mind and want to rule everyone else out.
Follow-up question...What do you think is appropriate dress for a date?
chilehead9 comments on Sep 17, 2018:
I'll make a special effort to keep the clothes with holes in them to a minimum, and the clothes should fit the venue. Most important to me is that we're both comfortable to be who we are.

Compared to the rest of the world, there is no "Left" in the United States, only two branches of the Right that range from moderate to lunatic/fascist. Obama's positions were further to the right than Reagan's were when Reagan started his first term, yet the people currently calling themselves the "Right" were branding him a Communist.
I've read a few posts on her lately saying that online dating doesn't work.
chilehead9 comments on Oct 14, 2018:
The biggest reason is that the pay-to-play dating sites have all sorts of reasons for you to NOT find a mate through them. One of their big selling points is how many users they have as potential matches if you join them. But every time someone finds love through the site, they lose two PAYING members and their advertising number goes down. One of the founders of OK Cupid had a blog entry explaining this in-depth, and he provided the math behind it - and then Match.com bought OKC and the blog entry got disappeared. I don't pay dating sites, I'd rather spend what little money I have on the person I'm taking out on a date. But the sites are geared to hide potential matches from you until you part with some cash, or meet some very specific criteria and jump through some other hoops. It doesn't help that a percentage of the people online cannot behave themselves in a decent manner, and there's scammers all over the place, too.

If it were possible, I'd only be eating GMO foods. They're more nutritious and they have higher crop yields (meaning lower costs at the store). The fear of GMO foods are being propagated by people who are incapable of understanding what is going on, and how there is far more variation in the more traditional technique of hybridization that has been going on for centuries.

Today was a good day. Just as I was heading off to my last break of the day, one of our guests stopped me and told me that they really enjoyed the presentation I just gave, and that the whole family learned a lot. That's like the jackpot of responses for me, and I'm still in a great mood from that brief comment 4 hours ago.
