There has to be some arbitrary point of adulthood for legal purposes. I had to be 21 to be considered an adult...now it is 18 for some things. When I think back to how I was before 21, I did not have it together enough at 18 to be responsible. If it were up to me, the age of majority would revert back to 21 years of age...no voting, no buying alcohol, no gun owning, no entering into contracts, etc. No everyone matures at the same rate. However, being that there is no test of maturity, the arbitrary 21 was as good as a place to have the age of majority...and certainly better than the currrent 18.

@atheist Hardly naive? Or just plain too unintelligent to figure the cost of retrofitting 315,000,000 existing guns with GPS and where the money would come from for the retrofitting and the manpower for monitoring. More likely the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Consider of the 315,000,000 guns, there are many different types with no place to put a GPS device. Where would one find a place in a 1911A1 to put a GPS device? Where in a .30 Caliber Carbine, where in a S&W M60, where in a P08? Installing such devices in those hundreds of different guns is a fool's errand. Devices that will need batteries that will have to be replaced from time to time. If the device could be put in, a device can be taken out. Consider the thousands of guns that are not known to the government. In all, a suggestion that is obviously ridiculous.

The element you have ignored is that, until they reach the age of majority, they are children in the eyes of the law and must obey their parents and teachers (in loco parentis). Note, the Brady Bill forbade the manufacture of magazines with more than ten rounds...the ban was in effect for ten years...had zero effect upon the availability of more-than-ten-round magazines in that there were so many in circulation and warehouses that it only cause the price of those magazines to rise somewhat. dahermit replies on Feb 18, 2018:
@Varn There was no "ban on assault weapons." The Brady Bill/Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act did not ban assault weapons. It only changed what features could be part of any particular gun. The features were: A bayonet lug, detachable magazine, and a pistol grip. You could have two of the three on any particular gun. It also prohibited the manufacture and sale of any magazine with capacity over ten rounds, but existing high-capacity magazines were still allowed. It was quickly noted that some Chinese manufactured semi-automatic copies of AK47's started being imported and sold with thumb-holes in the stocks to get around the no pistol grip rule. Also, there were so many high-capacity magazines still in existence that they were still available at stores and gun shows during the whole ten years until that law expired. To sum, the law was thought to be a ban by the nieve anti-gun population, was merely an annoyance to those of us who used AR-15's in target competitions (AR-15's are the dominant rifle used in formal rifle competitions) in that we had to pay a few dollars more for high-capacity magazines than before the "ban". Also noteworthy is the fact that despite statistics showing otherwise, Brady Bill supports claimed that it had cut down on shootings. In reality, it had no effect whatsoever.

@noworry28 You do not have to "...wait a few days on a background check...". The "I" in "NICS" means "instant"...with computers and phone access to the BATF, it only takes a matter of a few minutes to determine if there is any reason to deny a person a gun. You are correct that privet sales between individuals can still be made sans background checks. However, that is not a common scenario in the mass shootings in the last few years. For instance, in the Columbine shooting, the guns were obtained illegally from an acquaintance of the boys. In the Sandy Hook shooting, the kid (shooter) access his mother's gun, who had obtained it legally. Also, the Los Vegas shooter had passed the NICS check, so there was not privet sale outside a gun show, etc. So while closing the "gun show loophole" sounds good, it would not have stopped the mass shootings. So your post begs the question: What "better attempt" can be made to keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people, other than the existing NICS check? When the anti-gun people pushed for the NICS, they said it would prevent all the gun murders...but obviously didn't. @Hugh " How in the hell does one get their hands on that?" The same way I did...I walked into a gun store, provided identification, and passed the NICS screen via ATF. I then used my AR-15 to continue competing in the Service Rifle Matches at my local gun club...just like thousands of others do. I switched from my M1 Garand (also an "assault rifle") because I am recoil-sensitive and my Garand was beating the hell out of me despite an extensive relationship with the Garand, having been one of the last people to be issued one in Basic Training in 1962. In short, AR-15's are the most common target rifle now used in High Power and Service Rifle matches.

I think it's well past time to reinstate the Reagan-era ban on all assault weapons. It worked. Then it expired. Now look where we are.
dahermit replies on Feb 15, 2018:
For God's sake! (not meant literally) It was NOT Reagan-era "ban" on all assault weapons. It was the Clinton-era "Brady Bill" that got passed as, "The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act" Also, it did not "ban" assault rifles...it institution a point system wherein a semi-auto rifle could not have certain features, like a pistol grip combined with a detachable magazine and a bayonet lug. It also forbid the manufacture of detachable magazines that held more than ten rounds. The law turned out to be a complete sham. During that time, I purchased twenty and thirty round magazines (I needed twenty-round magazines for Service Rifle competitions...the twenty round magazines are used to support the rifle during the standing phase of Service Rifle competition) for my Colt H-Bar AR-15 with no trouble inasmuch as magazines of more than ten rounds already in existence were excepted from the law. Also, Chinese copies of the AK-47's appeared with thumb-hole stocks, which effectively circumvented the law relative to pistol grips. Inasmuch as bayonet lugs and pistol grips were never required for illegal shooting and the high cap magazines never disappeared from dealers shelves or at gun shows (albeit a little higher priced), the idea that somehow the Brady Law was "effective" is a ludicrous statement. As one can see, the Brady Act was enacted in 1993, had little to no effect on the murder rate from "assault weapons". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States

@jayneonacobb The definition you give for "well regulated", is a modern definition...not the meaning of the Second Amendment. During the Revolutionary War, when militias took part, they were so badly trained they were nearly useless. They could not be relied upon to maneuver and fire by rank, withdraw in rank to reload, etc., and would often run away from the British Regulars. Given their poor performance, the framers of the Bill of Rights, while not wanting a standing army (which as in Europe could be used against the people), they wanted people to form and practice as a military unit. Thus, the "well regulated"...it meant practiced as a military unit. The framers likely thought that the people would naturally like the idea of practicing on the village greens and such, but it never happened to any degree. Nevertheless, the framers of the Second Amendment put a comma after the word "militia" (making it a subordinate clause) and the words "the people" to indicate it was a right of the people to keep and bear arms, not the right of the militia...note that the Constitution only recognizes three entities, the Federal Government, the State Governments, and the "people". Thus the militia has no "rights" according to the Constitution. How the current anti-gun crowd, the "well regulated" somehow is interpreted as the authority for some kind of gun control and regulation is somehow a license to limit the ownership of guns is a mystery to me inasmuch as there were no laws concerning the ownership of arms when the Bill of Rights was ratified.

dahermit replies on Feb 15, 2018:
Actually, it is a common misconception that the Second Amendment was put in the Constitution as a hedge against the Federal Government. It was put there as BOTH a possible counter against a possible totalitarian turn of the Federal Government AND to insure that there would be adequate forces (the newly minted American citizens were leary of a standing army) to counter any possible invasion on behalf of foreign governments. In fact, the only time the militia was called-up was to support the enforcement of the Federal Government's Whiskey Tax which the farmers had rebelled at paying (The Whiskey Rebellion). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiskey_Rebellion#Militia_expedition Aside from all that, one wonders if the media had not advertised the fact that schools were such emotionally lucrative targets if there would be such targeting them by disenfranchised youth today.

It would be more than 80,000 years if they only had conventional propulsion...those of us left on earth would not care or be willing to finance such a venture inasmuch as it would be irrelevant to us. Logically, it would be the same for aliens...such long trips would make them pointless even for scientific study. @Betty I like that idea...as a person who makes his own ammo in great abundance to allow me to shoot about 13,140 rounds per year on my home range, if there was an ammo shortage it would up the price and I could make more to sell on the Black Market. I could make some serious money.
Anyone ever wonder if the solution to Americas mass shootings was very simple?

The solution is repealing the 2nd Amendment and then labeling the NRA as a terrorist organization.

The NRA has not shot anyone. Why not make murder illegal?

@Varn If fanatics are hoarding guns and ammunition, then there are less for the bad guys to shoot people with so that would be a good thing.
