Statistics published recently suggest 42% of US households have at least one gun.
davknight comments on May 6, 2019:
Actually, it's 25% of American households with guns. The more regulated guns become, the more expensive they are, and thus less affordable for the majority of folks. Britain began regulating gun ownership in 1903. Now, gun ownership there has become a luxury of the rich. The US began regulating guns in 1934. And gun ownership amongst poor and working class people has shrunk, while the wealthy have been hoarding guns. Your figures are about forty years out of date. Keep in mind, as of about 1975, 50% of American homes had an average of three firearms each. Nowadays, its 25% with an average of six firearms. If, as Mao stated,"Political power grows out the barrel of a gun", then 'gun control' means stripping the majority of people their political power. Not a smart thing to do. Especially in the Age of Trumplerism!

She had been taught that 'God' created the world just 4,000 years ago. And that dinosaurs couldn't have gone extinct 40,000,000 years ago, because the World 'didn't exist' at the time!

Unfortunately, illiteracy was high, and most 'good book' owners didn't know how to read them.In his younger days, the Shawnee Chieftan, Tecumseh, used to visit White settler families, and amaze them by reading their own 'good books' to them. He would later earn their ire by trying to forge a sort of 'United States of Indigenous Tribes', to prevent the White settlers from penetrating farther westwards.

One thing it is not--it is NOT the study of ANTS! Also, in some countries (e.g. France, and Australia), archaeology is actually considered a separate field.

The 'c-word'- oh, naughty, naughty! I have often wondered how the f-word became the most foul ...
davknight comments on Apr 29, 2019:
The 'F' word is Anglo-Saxon slang, for the act of nooky-wooky. Its literal meaning is "to bang two objects together".(They said "fuckin"). The 'P' word ("pysse" in Anglo-Saxon), meant the act of urination. While the 'S' word ("shytte"), meant the act of defecation. So why are they considered 'bad' words? Well, the Normans invaded England in 1066, and tried to Normanize the population. That included discouraging the use of the Anglo-Saxon language. They wanted the natives to say "coitus", instead of "fuckin". And "urinate", in lieu of "pysse". But they didn't have a lot of luck; and instead of Normanizing the English, they found themselves being Anglo-Saxonized instead.

Once upon a time, the battleship was the principle capital ship of navies. The battleship was armored, equipped with 14" to 18" guns, and could rain death and destruction on targets 20-25 miles away. But then, the aircraft carrier took the place of the battleship, due to being able to hit targets out to the maximum range of the aircraft it carried (the strike radius for modern carrier-based fighter-bombers is about 1,500 miles). Thus, the floating gun platform idea was replaced by the floating airbase idea. The Falklands War showed the vulnerability of surface vessels to land-based anti-ship missiles, such as the Exocet. The Chinese have long been improving the range of their Silkworm anti-ship missiles. To the point where they can reach surface ships in excess of 1,500 miles away. The Iranians also have Silkworm missiles (albeit older models). I have long predicted that in a US-Iranian War, the American Navy might very well lose a surface ship, or two, to the Iranian Silkworms. And this would be a big blow to the US Navy's ego. As it is confident in the effectiveness of its screens of guided missile frigates and destroyers, which are supposed to keep incoming missiles and aircraft away from their aircraft carriers. Aircraft carriers will continue to be the principle capital ships of navies, at least for awhile. And the arms race will continue, as each country seeks to develop the 'longer arm'. This goes back into pre-history. One monkey clobbers another monkey with his fist. The other monkey invents a club, that out-ranges his antagonist's fist. The other monkey picks up a rock, and throws it from well outside the range of the club. Then, his adversary invents the slingshot. And on it goes...

About thirty years ago, I was sitting in a Pentecostal Church in a small Alabama town. The head Preacher and his wife had just returned from a vacation in Maui, paid for by the congregation. The Preacher described playing golf with some wealthy businessmen. When they asked him what business he was in, he proudly told them he was "in the God business!". And I thought to myself, he sure is! Then, his wife came out, in a mumu she had bought there. She was big as a house, and looked utterly ridiculous in it. At that point, I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing, as I mused over the origin of the mumu. It seems a missionary from Boston was prosyletizing out there, back in the 1850s. And he would send letters home to his wife, lamenting about the nakedness of the "heathen". Especially all the young Hawaiian girls running around naked. Well, his wife thought she would do her 'Christian duty', and have the ladies of her sewing circle sew together patchwork dresses, and ship them out to Hawaii, to clothe those poor, naked girls with. When the preacher got them, he distributed them amongst the island women, only to discover his wife and her friends had made them all in extra-large sizes! When he asked her about that in a letter, she replied "well, you didn't tell me what sizes they wore!". The God business sure has its funny moments!
