Once upon a time, the battleship was the principle capital ship of navies. The battleship was armored, equipped with 14" to 18" guns, and could rain death and destruction on targets 20-25 miles away. But then, the aircraft carrier took the place of the battleship, due to being able to hit targets out to the maximum range of the aircraft it carried (the strike radius for modern carrier-based fighter-bombers is about 1,500 miles). Thus, the floating gun platform idea was replaced by the floating airbase idea. The Falklands War showed the vulnerability of surface vessels to land-based anti-ship missiles, such as the Exocet. The Chinese have long been improving the range of their Silkworm anti-ship missiles. To the point where they can reach surface ships in excess of 1,500 miles away. The Iranians also have Silkworm missiles (albeit older models). I have long predicted that in a US-Iranian War, the American Navy might very well lose a surface ship, or two, to the Iranian Silkworms. And this would be a big blow to the US Navy's ego. As it is confident in the effectiveness of its screens of guided missile frigates and destroyers, which are supposed to keep incoming missiles and aircraft away from their aircraft carriers. Aircraft carriers will continue to be the principle capital ships of navies, at least for awhile. And the arms race will continue, as each country seeks to develop the 'longer arm'. This goes back into pre-history. One monkey clobbers another monkey with his fist. The other monkey invents a club, that out-ranges his antagonist's fist. The other monkey picks up a rock, and throws it from well outside the range of the club. Then, his adversary invents the slingshot. And on it goes...

"Salud!" was the greeting that the Republican side used during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939.( It just means "salute" in Spanish). The Republicans had large numbers of anarchists, socialists, and communists in their ranks, and they thought that "salud!" sounded more 'comradely' than the usual "buenos dios".

davknight comments on Apr 24, 2019:
About thirty years ago, I was sitting in a Pentecostal Church in a small Alabama town. The head Preacher and his wife had just returned from a vacation in Maui, paid for by the congregation. The Preacher described playing golf with some wealthy businessmen. When they asked him what business he was in, he proudly told them he was "in the God business!". And I thought to myself, he sure is! Then, his wife came out, in a mumu she had bought there. She was big as a house, and looked utterly ridiculous in it. At that point, I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing, as I mused over the origin of the mumu. It seems a missionary from Boston was prosyletizing out there, back in the 1850s. And he would send letters home to his wife, lamenting about the nakedness of the "heathen". Especially all the young Hawaiian girls running around naked. Well, his wife thought she would do her 'Christian duty', and have the ladies of her sewing circle sew together patchwork dresses, and ship them out to Hawaii, to clothe those poor, naked girls with. When the preacher got them, he distributed them amongst the island women, only to discover his wife and her friends had made them all in extra-large sizes! When he asked her about that in a letter, she replied "well, you didn't tell me what sizes they wore!". The God business sure has its funny moments!

Shunning was once an accepted form of social punishment, in Britain, Europe, and Colonial America. Even the Vikings practiced it. Paul Revere was shunned. While making his famous ride, he got captured by a British patrol. While prodding him in the legs, with a red hot bayonet, they got him to spill the beans on the rebel courier network. The Sons of Liberty wanted to whack him for it. But his old friend, Sam Adams stepped in, saving his life. However, for the duration of the Revolution, Revere was shunned by his fellow Bostonians.

I don't think any fruit, or vegetable can be said to be "Vegan". Back in the '80s, I can remember an episode of 'Nova', about micro-photography. Some with 6 or 8 big red eyes, 8 or 10 legs, and powerful looking claws, or pinchers! And I thought to myself, I'm glad I'm an omnivore, and eat my meat cooked, rather than raw n wriggling!
