They are designed to rouse childhood memories of one's parents. The public, in all countries, are raised to think of their national government as a parental figure (e.g. the "Fatherland", the "Mother" country, "Daddyland", etc.). So, a national anthem must be designed to arouse subconscious memories of one's parents. (That's my theory anyways).

The American bourgeoisie can be broken down into two competing factions. The extremely naive, represented by the Donkey Party, and the extremely stupid, or Elephant Party. The two-party system we have is designed so that 'third parties' don't have a rat's chance of obtaining political power. Therefore, the electorate is forced to choose between the two. I don't consider the electorate to be blamed for a lack of choice between the idiotic, and the absurd.

As life-long member of the American middle class and a 30 year veteran teacher, I have a question?
davknight comments on Mar 9, 2019:
There is no 'middle class'. Never has been one. In a capitalist society, all work is done by the working class (or 'proletariat'). All wealth is the product of Labor. When the capitalists start 'outsourcing', only the capitalist class ('bourgeoisie') is to blame. The attitude of the bourgeoisie is "So, vote with your feet!", meaning workers should move to another part of the country, if they don't like things. The anarchist, Emma Goldman, had a different view. She told workers: "Ask them for work. If they won't give you work, ask them for bread. If they won't give you bread, then TAKE the bread!".

Two cops not charged with rape after having sex with a person in their custody.
davknight comments on Mar 9, 2019:
I took a criminal justice class once. And each week, a cop from a nearby department, came in and give a recruiting speech. One guy advised the students that, if ever they applied for a cop job, and in response to the question "Why do you wanna be a cop?", they should respond "Because I wanna have power over others!". This is actually considered the 'correct' response, because, as the cop recruiter put it: "Everybody wants ta have power over others! Right?" Personally, I'd like to see police departments disbanded. Modern police departments have only been around for 150 years or so. But, in the US anyways, they have become way over-militarized. In their place, I'd like to see Public Safety Departments--no badges, no "ranks",-- and they'd serve as firefighters, EMT techs,as well as normal police duties. They would also serve as school crossing guards, and clean bird crap off picnic tables. They would shovel snow, serve as dogcatchers, and pick up litter along the roads. No uniforms, and no guns, unless absolutely necessary. And sidearms, when issued, would be limited to revolvers, since they tend to get trigger-happy when issued large capacity semiautomatic pistols. (They also tend to shoot themselves in the foot more often with the semiautos).

davknight comments on Mar 7, 2019:
We called it 'pop' too. But the very word brings to mind a mentally retarded woman I used to help care for, fifteen years ago. She was actually addicted to pop; and we had to keep her pop locked up in a refrigerator, out in the garage. In lieu of her often violent behavior, we weren't supposed to give her any unless she behaved herself. The first few times I worked with her, she would follow me around, yelling "POP!POP!POP!POP!POP!POP!POP!" until my eardrums nearly burst. She thought I was a sucker, and would give in easily. However, with a great deal of patience, and fortitude on my part, I managed to make her understand that whether she got any pop, depended on her behavior. Gradually, we reached an understanding!

Celebration of Columbus comes from Italian-Americans who, when they arrived, saw Irish-Americans celebrating St. Patrick's Day.So the Italian-Americans gave us Columbus Day. I view it as one of those harmless ethnic celebrations, similar to the small-town 'founders day' events, that were once popular. I can remember when Michigan towns founded by Finns, would break out in Finnish flags, towns founded by Swedes would break out in Swedish flags, etc., once a year, to celebrate their founding, as well as ethnicity. All harmless fun. And to be expected in what I call a 'settler country', that is, a country where most of the population originally came from somewhere else.

If wealth was the result of hard work . . .
davknight comments on Mar 6, 2019:
Real work is measured in ergs. An erg is the amount of energy spent by one beetle in climbing a wall one centimeter in height. By that measure, the people who do the hardest manual labor would earn the most ergs. Real value is measured in the time spent in making a particular product.early socialists argued for what they called the 'Labor Wage', whereby one would be 'paid' in 'time credits', which could be exchanged for products. Example: A typical automobile has around 1,800 hours of labor that goes into it. Therefore, you'd work 1,800 hours; and be able to buy a new car. By the Labor Wage, those who worked the most hours would be able to buy the most stuff. Under either system, the average worker would be getting a fairer deal.

American Military Dominance In One Staggering Chart
davknight comments on Mar 4, 2019:
Military "dominance" cannot be measured by money spent. Keep in mind the Americans pay $500 for potty seats, $8,000 for Allen wrenches, and an average of $7,500 per DAY, per person, to keep troops abroad. The U.S. military has a tremendous capacity to generate violence. But that is mostly of the thermonuclear variety. The U.S. Army, and Marine Corps can only field about 60% of the ground combat troops they had in South Vietnam, at the height of the Vietnam War. They are ridiculously expensive in upkeep, and small in the number of ground combat troops they can actually field. That would put them at a serious disadvantage in a real-war scenario with China, or the Russian Federation.

A hundred years from now, a team of researchers are excavating a landfill, and all of a sudden, they start turning up bell-bottom trousers and tie-dyed tee-shirts, they'll know they've reached the 1970s. A little further down, and they start turning up women's girdles, with the garter clasps, and they know they've hit the 1960s. Mickey Mouse hats and coonskin caps, the 1950s, and so on. The same goes for consumer fads, like transistor radios, and hula hoops.

davknight comments on Mar 4, 2019:
In the U.S., Native American remains are protected by NAGPRA, the Native American Graves Protection Act, which stipulates that they must be re-interred by the nearest tribe. Many forensic anthropologists argue that they need time to examine them. This causes friction with the tribes (e.g. the "Kennewick Man' controversy of twenty-plus years ago). Still others argue over who the remains should be returned to, pointing out that Native American tribes seldom lived in the same area for longer than 100-150 years. So, someone in Arizona finds remains. And they date back 5,000 years. Do they go to the Dine (Navajo)? The Apache?, the Hopi? (None of whom were living there 5,000 years ago). NAGPRA, as written, probably needs to be re-written.
