Trump hasn't got a problem with treason. He is arguing that all the statues of treasonous Americans be left alone.
dermot235 replies on Jun 26, 2020:
What most people do not seem to realise is that most of the Confederate monuments were erected in the sixties as a direct challenge to the civil rights movement. They are not there to celebrate history or culture. They are there to show the black community that white people are still in charge. And they do not celebrate history or culture, they celebrate treason and slavery. So comparing these to statues of George Washington is not appropriate. Context is so important. White southerners need to understand this. And I think a lot of them do and they are happy to leave these statues there to send a message to the black community. That message is...we are still in charge.

Flowerwall comments on Jun 14, 2020:
Absolutely TOO MUCH
dermot235 replies on Jun 24, 2020:
@Flowerwall Yes I do have ideas on other countries in other parts of the world. But the US is alone (I've said this already) in the developed world in that it fails to provide healthcare for all. The US is the only country in that group that fails in this regard. No large scale world plan lol. And I'm not dictating, I'm discussing. I do have friends in the US and have spent quite a lot of time their doing business, (And had very good experiences doing that). Maybe we can discuss that sometime. It's something that I do think the US does really well. And Europe can learn from this. As for morphing into socialism, that's not what I'm looking for. We have billionaires in Europe. We have Free enterprise. We have a single free trade market of 27 countries in the EU. I strongly believe in Capitalism as a means of creating wealth and innovation. Something it does really well both in the US and in Europe. Where I have a problem is that when a country generates wealth it then becomes a question as to how we distribute that wealth to benefit all of our citizens. That does not mean total equality. I do understand that incentives must exist to incentivise people to take risks and create wealth. These incentives can exist with higher taxation. And I do think that the US will eventually revert back to more taxation than is present now. It was not to long ago (go back to the Fifty's or Sixties) that the US had a top rate of income tax of 70% and College was WAY more affordable than it is now. So the US has been here before. Since Regan it has gone the other way. When you have one of the most unequal countries in the world with 1% of the US population controlling 40% of the Wealth, then something will have to give at some point. Time will tell. But this Cycle has repeated itself more times than a few in US history. The Age of the Vanderbelts and income inequality back in the 1890's was one of those times. By 1907 under a republican President (Teddy Roosevelt) Income tax for the wealthy rose to 70% and above. There is not reason to believe that this cycle will not repeat itself again. And economic growth in the US has always been at it's highest when taxation was at it's highest. The 50's and 60's are a good example with growth rates in the economy at 6 and 7 % per annum. The economic Boom under Clinton was sustained when taxation was higher than now. If you went back to the Tax rates under Clinton you could afford to give EVERYONE Free college now. But the Bush Tax cuts and the Trump Tax cuts have made this impossible with most of these tax cuts going to the top 10% of the population and most of that going to the 1%.The Pendulum swings always throughout history. It will swing the other way. Unless for some reason history will not repeat itself. And that's not very ...

dermot235 replies on Jun 23, 2020:
@Flowerwall You seem to love increased access to social services, scholarships, and SOME financial payment These are HALF measures if even that. If you want to do it right you need more taxation. The US is alone among the developed nations when it comes to taxation levels being so low and it is also alone when it comes to not providing free health care and affordable college. And once again I will state so that maybe this time you will read it and accept it. Swedes do not feel oppressed and they continue to Vote for politicians that are in favour of high taxation and they are very proud of the way they run their society. No oppression going on here. And I suspect that when that goes to court in Sweden there courts will allow children to stay at home if they choose. We can watch that space. Unlike the US they have an independent Judiciary, There judges are not political appointments. So it's simple. The swedes control things. They are not controlled. How a higher rate of income Tax means you have lost control is strange to say the least. Especially when you have free health care and Free college. It's a trade off that they have freely chosen. It's not loss of control.

dermot235 replies on Jun 23, 2020:
@Flowerwall Comparing apples and Oranges. 2 separate issues and you now that. You can't be that stupid. And there is nothing oppressive about Sweden's taxation. Swedes are happy to pay these taxes. In fact some governments have been elected on a platform of higher taxation. And as for totalitarianism, you should look at the US for that. Sweden does not gerrymander it's districts. Does not have voter suppression. I guess you don't want to see something or choose to ignore it. The high taxation in western Europe means people do not have to pay for Private health insurance or have to worry about college fees for their Children. They are better off in the end. The number 1 cause of households going Bankrupt and foreclosures on homes in the US is medical bills. So I guess you could say that "inappropriate government overreach" stops you becoming homeless. How terrible that is. "Oppressive taxation" is not what Sweden has. There taxation is spend on their people and their people want it that way. This has been shown in election after election for the last 75 years. It seems you are not interested in the Truth or the facts. You just want to score points rather then argue the facts.

Was it wrong for the US to fight Hitler then???? "another countries practices" Is there not limit to what you would look at and just talk. The holocaust, The Genocide in Sudan, NOTHING at All. For most countries and peoples they do not change what they do unless they have a reason to. Just telling them your opinions will not change anything. Would there be any change in the US if BLM did not go out and protest. Do you think Hitler would have stopped the extermination of the jews if he was just talked to?? I'm not saying that there are times when you just have to let things be and sit back and let other countries sort out their own problems. But sometimes you have to do something. There is a time and a place for everything. It's not a black and white world we live in. There are shades of grey everywhere. But the Saudi's are probably the most barbaric regime on the planet. It says a lot about who we are as human being that we can just sit back and look on at this barbarity so we can have cheap oil. It's been going on for over 60 years now with the Saudi's. It's time to stand up to this behaviour. And we can do it cleverly. We don't have to start a war to bring about some positive change.

@yvilletom So you are using James Madison to forward your arguments. How many rounds could you shoot from a gun when James Madison was alive. I suspect maybe 1 every 2 minutes and then reload. Now you can legally buy Semi-Automatic guns that fire 60 rounds per minute. So to justify what exists now by telling us what "early congress" did it just farcical. I have evidence to support that you could not buy an Automatic rifle in a gun store when James Madison was alive. The constitution is not Sacrosanct. It has been changed before. That's why they are called Amendments. So it's time to change the constitution now.

So for example: When you have Free health care for all and better welfare protections for your citizens and FREE third level education you have a society that allows people to thrive and have opportunities that are based on their abilities and not how wealthy their parents are.
