@RavenCT My neighbour beside me had a cat that ate squirrels. He showed me the tails left in his driveway to prove it. The cat's name was Suzy and was lost a few years ago. The squirrels are coming back but they don't have tails like those. My neighbour across the street does the same thing as you. He just keeps filling up his feeder. Then he sits in his window and watches the show. We can all see his feeder and I enjoy it and don't have to deal with it.

A couple weeks later, after the Sawfly disappears, the leaves start growing back.

So you built the planter? Can you give me more details? I'm thinking of building a few things here as well. What do you do with succulents and sedum during winter?
flower_nut replies on Nov 17, 2018:
@Zoohome I consider them “evergreen”. They turn a different colour and look cool in the snow. The planter was a tedious task. I used (construction grade Styrofoam insulation board) and cut the design out of it. Three layers of Styrofoam were used to get the thickness of the planter. The centre cut out piece was made smaller and used as the mould in the centre of the planter. When you pour the concrete the planter is upside down. I wanted drainage holes in the bottom so I put a pipe in the concrete before it set. Make sure to tamp the concrete to get bubbles out. It's so much easier to use wood and build a square planter.

@dede18 Wow! I'm impressed thank you! Nova Scotia is considered a gardening zone 5. I've had no problems with Daylilies, but other perennials with fragile roots are always at risk. This spring we had two Hibiscus that did not come back for us. We usually lose something every year and spread what does well. Daylilies work well. I lived in Saskatchewan with a garden zone of 2. I'm very grateful for the gardening zone I'm in now and I push that limit with some plants.

@flower_nut you probably know this, but I'll share with others who might not ... Daylilies are not lilies ... they have rhizomes instead of a layered bulb, like the Liliums do. They are commonly also known as "Hems" which is short for Hemerocallis their Latin name, which means ... Flower for a Day

flower_nut replies on Nov 11, 2018:
@Ladydiana They devastated our lilies on a biblical proportion. There were so many beetles I couldn't pick them all off. It was depressing to have to remove most of our Oriental and Asiatic lilies. If I catch the beetle early enough the lilies do great. These little suckers fly to our garden from the neighbour up the road. Once you have them they're hard to get rid of.

@RussRAB I have one that smells sweet, it's yellow and tall. The rest of them don't smell much at all. You can be 10 feet away from the daylily and smell it like a honeysuckle. The strongest smell in my garden comes from the oriental lilies. They have a very strong perfume smell.
