How do you feel about this ?
gearl comments on Oct 5, 2018:
According to AP https://www.apnews.com/c09b2ee4b71540c8a7fd6178820c5970 churches must register with the government or otherwise they are shut down and certain churches have refused to do so and are being closed. The article say also that China has an estimated 38 million Protestants, and experts have predicted that the country will have the world’s largest Christian population in a few decades. It also says they have been much harder on Muslims than Christians. I agree with the other commenters that FAUX is the last place I would go to get facts.

How is your faith in humanity?

When I was religious I was very negative. When I lost faith in religion I gained faith in people. Right now in the present political climate I have lost a lot of faith in people in general.

gearl comments on Jan 10, 2019:
I've always wrestled with the solution to this problem. It has certainly gotten worse since Reagan. I've always felt that the school system has bent to this hypocrisy and let parents walk all over what good teachers we had. I know that in this town we have no decent teachers left. My daughter is a senior at NAU so I was familiar with the teachers just three years ago. All the decent ones have since moved on and many have gone into different fields. The county government has also went to shit becoming a good ol boy bunch of greedy bastards. I hope that more people of moral character will start to run for local office similar to what we saw in the House and take back government. Good people need to run for school boards especially and get education back into education.

Evangelicals Are Comparing Trump To The Biblical King David - The Intellectualist
gearl comments on Mar 28, 2018:
More and more folks on CNN and MSNBC are calling out the evangelicals. The kids speaking at the marches and saying no more “thoughts and prayer” without action. More and more people on YouTube are calling out their hypocrisy. I hear it in regular conversation even with the religious. Trump’s actions with Stormy and Karen and perhaps a bunch more women highlight his hypocrisy. His polls with the hypocrites may not be changing but for the other 2/3, I believe it is. Not all folks are as hypocritical as lowlife evangelicals.

gearl comments on Jan 16, 2018:
I live in the White Mountains of Arizona. Unlike the East, we have experienced the warmest winter that I have seen after living here since 1976. Normally our temperatures are about the same as the midwest but this year it has gotten down to 20 a couple of times and 60s in the day. I burn wood and have used about half what I would have used normally. No snow on the ski-run either and they have been able to make very little. It's also the driest winter with virtually no moisture for the last few months.

Do you think all religious are equal?
gearl comments on Oct 24, 2017:
I agree with you. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Sarah Haider and other well-known Muslims all point to the fact that it is their holy book and adherence to it that causes so many problems within the Muslim communities. All Christians are not alike. The closer they adhere to their holy book the more immoral they become in my opinion. It’s fundies that profess belief in killing gays, in taking away civil rights, women’s rights and that claim they’re being persecuted when anyone argues with them. Some do believe in science, evolution, and human rights. From what I’ve seen moderate Muslims are less tolerant than almost all Christians. I would certainly team up with a Christian or a Muslim for a good cause even though I disagreed with him and would argue with him the next day on philosophy. I see so much us/them ideology right now that I don’t want to get in that same camp as what we see in government. They are all false but not all equally dangerous.

No other book can make atheists faster than the Bible when read without coaching from a religious instructor. When my daughter was about 12 she started asking questions about the Bible. I don't think she ever picked up another Bible ever again.

It appears to me that Republicans and Democrats live by two completely different moral standards. Republicans can and do just about anything and deny it and don't seem to have to own up whereas Democrats can't get away with anything without the world crashing down around them. I really think they need to take a few lessons from the Republicans about standing their ground and standing up for one another. I hope the House can stand together till they get the complete report from Mueller then make it public.

A lot of people on YouTube are pretty much at war with religion. These folks are speaking out about as loud as anybody can, which is pretty much equivalent to being a missionary. They do demand that illegal references to religion be removed from public buildings and the other things you mention. No, the absolute worst thing we could ever do would be to use violence.

Compare the last hundred years with the one previous. The 1800s saw Mormonism then Millerism which branched into Seventh Day Adventism and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Christian Science and the Salvation Army made inroads. The only churches of any significance born in the last hundred years that I can think of is Scientology and Wicca. Granted there have been a host of sects springing up but most fade within a few years. Pentecostalism sprang up after 1900 and has surely grown over the last century but I wonder if it hasn’t reached its climax and we will start to see declining numbers. If Europe is any example we may see large segments of our society distancing themselves from religion. I hope that the current wave of hypocrisy that is so evident, will hurry this along.

Does anybody have knowledge or experience with Cromo filters with DSLRs?
gearl comments on Nov 23, 2019:
I had to Google it but apparently they are the same as Cokin filters. They are square and fit in a holder that attaches into the filter ring of the lens. I have a slew of Cokin filters but haven't used them in years. I would imagine that because filters affect the light passing through them before entering the lens, that any that worked with film would have the same effect with digital except when say, auto color balance tries to compensate for them if you shoot jpgs. I just haven't felt any need for them in years as I can preform the same function in Photoshop more effectively. Perhaps neutral density filters might be helpful for giving a waterfall a silky appearance with a long exposure but for me, mine just sit on the shelf. There are also some that give star-burst effects or rainbows effects which if you have, might be fun for you to play with.

Are atheists and agnostics intolerant?
gearl comments on Dec 27, 2017:
It's one thing to criticize ideas and another to criticize people. Some people call it criticizing the messenger instead of the message. It's also called an ad hominem attack. Many people don't seem or don't want to understand the difference. When someone attacks an idea such as female genital mutilation then Muslims say we're attacking them. No we are pointing out a sick practice. When someone says he doesn't believe Jesus was a real person some religious people say we are defaming them by not believing as they do. No we're just saying what we personally believe. These things are not personal attacks. I doubt most of us go out in public or knocking on doors trying to convince people of our assessments on issues but when we are asked or challenged with them, certainly it is our right to express opinions. Too many times not agreeing with somebody is construed as chastisement. Should we live and let live? Sure, but turnabout is fair play.

Thanks, I’ll look that book up. Your comment made me think of Newton. He is considered by many to be one of the most intelligent people who ever lived yet because of indoctrination he spent more time on alchemy than on physics. Even during the renaissance it would have been a death sentence to speak out against the church. People were as intelligent as we but they just lacked education and information and the church did everything they could to keep it that way. Now we have people that call themselves conservatives and those who are progressive. Conservatives, especially social conservatives, tend to want to return to the days of ignorance while progressive look to the future. I have real problems with those who look back at the ancient world and find magical knowledge that was lost. I have never found evidence of that in any literature that I have ever read. People were ingenious but they had no “hidden knowledge that was lost.” The holy books have bronze age thinking permeating their pages and it is useful historically to learn how those people thought but because so much of those books is pure myth, it certainly is not useful as factual history and the contents are not scientific and they contain very little morality.

As a former Jehovah's Witness I see that the practices in his list are almost all shared by them. To me, the biggest thing that separates cults from more mainstream religions is the practice of shunning. As some of the respondents mention below this aspect is becoming more mainstream. Many Evangelicals and fundamentalist folks shun their own children or friends for infringement of dogma especially apostasy, homosexuality and misogyny. The thing is I'm personally seeing a type of shunning in Catholic and other mainstream religions and even in relation to politics. I just don't remember that happening twenty years ago.

Creation myths often end in adventures of the first humans clearly making choices and being held responsible for free thought such as Eve being held responsible for wanting knowledge. What I find about comedy amazing is how things I thought were lying on the floor laughable 50 years ago, are now, when I watch them, quite corny. Also mood play a lot into it. I still like “There’s Something About Mary” though.

We live in a small town with both a Safeway and a Bashas. I finally got some TP the other day by going in at 6:30. As far a food goes it seems most folks are buying canned goods and noodles. There is so far plenty of produce and that is our staple so I figure we'll be healthier than most as long as this nonsense lasts.
