@Happy_Killbot i disagree totally about how to calculate how much people should be paid. if a person cannot keep a roof over his/her head and stay fed, then the wage is not fair, no matter what the work is. besides, again, who decides the contribution's value? anyone willing to work honestly should be paid enough to live, not to drive a mercedes, not to eat caviar, but also not to be afraid to take a sick day because that will mean his/her child has no lunch money for a while. as for coverage, triage for medical attention the family cannot afford and which will not automatically be provided is meaningless. g

genessa replies on Apr 25, 2019:
@Happy_Killbot giving everyone a test doesn't give ANYONE coverage, in and of itself. maybe i should have said living wage and not minimum wage. the average salary you mentioned is a hair under the minimum LIVING wage in most states, and more than a hair under in some. living wage means enough to support two adults and a child. how DO we qualify guidance counselors these days? i'd be curious to know that. i know when i was in high school, my guidance counselor was something of an idiot, and didn't respect my privacy one iota either. (a friend of mine overheard him gossiping about my iq with another counselor, in the hallway, where anyone could hear!) g

@Happy_Killbot however, putting quirky people away and/or just discriminating against them WOULD be a natural and i think inevitable consequence of this practice. and if there were no consequences, what would it be for, anyway? what would be its purpose? regardless of purpose, though, whom do we trust to decide who needs help, and what kind of help? this would not help anyone except those who use their power unjustly to make these decisions. g

@TCorCM yes, pretty much. the dems do have maybe three bad members... make that two; one got voted out last year. joe manchin votes with the republicans. his usefulness is simply to keep his seat blue so maybe we can have the majority and write some useful legislation, not in secret, and actually let senators read it before voting on it. the other is joe donnelly, who isn't as bad as manchin. otherwise, yeah, even the less liberal dems are pretty damned good all told. and the republicans.... i have not found ONE yet, and i've been looking, not ONE i can trust, and that goes for weld too, though he isn't as awful as some. he's still not someone i would want to see in power. there was a funny movement just before the 2018 elections in which conservatives tried to convince liberals that everyone was actually leaving the democratic party. maybe they managed to convince themselves; you can see their real goal was not reached. anyway, i've been reading about random republican elected officials reregistering as democrats. i don't know if i trust them but it is funny since it's the opposite of what we were told was happening. g

genessa replies on Apr 24, 2019:
@LetzGetReal and obviously i was able to do that too, and i said i liked patheos. not everyone is familiar with it and not everyone feels comfortable clicking strange links. posting links without a comment that gives a clue what is IN the article would give me pause were i not already familiar with that site; i still would have appreciated knowing in advance whether the topic was of interest to me (it was, as it happens). i cannot be alone in feeling that way. g

I saw a great line from a comedian. Two guys dress exactly the same, they will give each other the thumbs up, then high-fives. Two women dress up exactly the same, they think "That Bitch!" then pretend not to see the other all night long. :-)
genessa replies on Apr 23, 2019:
yeah but you know what? that only happens on tv and in movies and from the mouths of comedians. in real life, if two women meet and find they're wearing the same dress, they laugh and maybe hang out together. tv and movies and comedians have given us a blueprint we don't necessarily follow. g
