Why do people post short, retorical statements like.
genessa comments on Jan 28, 2019:
there doesn't seem to be an obvious correlation between such posts and religion, but almost every time i see such a post, the poster turns out to have labeled him/herself as religious, or a believer. in addition, some of those posters turn out to have stolen their pictures and profiles from other dating sites, and some are using pictures of porn stars or other semi-famous people. so i am very wary of such posts, not just annoyed at how useless they are, but also suspicious; i think the people who post them are looking to see who responds positively and then plan to privately message those respondents and scam them. i can't prove it. that's just my impression. g
In a discussion, I overheard the difference between Republicans and Democrats. What do you think?
genessa comments on Jan 28, 2019:
i have heard it put more simply: republicans don't care about what other people experience unless it happens to them too, or someone they love. no gay rights -- unless my son is gay. no immigration -- unless my wife is mexican. guns are not a problem -- unless it's my kid's school that gets shot up. "no one needs health care as long as i have health care" and "i don't care about that bad thing unless it happens to me." democrats say "i need health care and everyone else needs it too" and "that bad thing shouldn't happen to ANYONE." g

no thank you. by the way, you called someone's comment dismissive and insulting. i don't mean to be insulting, but yes, i am dismissive, openly dismissive, of this kind of stuff. universal consciousness is not where it's at. yes, i dismiss that. g
Make the best of life...
genessa comments on Jan 28, 2019:
if you want to make the best of life, why would you think that you, a believer in jesus, will find someone to love here on a site full of atheists and agnostics? it puzzles me. that doesn't seem like the best use of your efforts, unless you mistakenly believe that godless girls are easy. g

Japan’s emperor
genessa comments on Jan 27, 2019:
part of the surrender was the admission, including by the emperor himself, that the emperor was fully human and not divine. he died while i was in japan, and his death was not announced to the people for a week or two. even wikipedia says he died january 7, 1989. that simply is not so. he died in december 1988, and the english-language newspapers of japan carried that news, so i knew it (i can't read much japanese, certainly not enough to read a newspaper!) but the japanese-language papers said he was doing fine! the new year is a big deal in japan and the powers-that-were didn't want to ruin it for everyone, so they lied. even as late as that, some older japanese people believed the emperor was divine. his death must have come as a terrible shock to them. his son, no spring chicken himself, is on the throne now. as far as i know, no one considers him divine. g

i don't know what most people think about that. i really don't. i have no access to that information. evangelicals clearly do make that conflation. everyone else? i have no idea. some do and some don't. a majority? where would i get the stats for that? g
Very disappointed lately.
genessa comments on Jan 27, 2019:
i try to speak to people within their own bubble if necessary, but it doesn't always work out. a long, long time ago, when i worked for the department of justice, using a mag card ii word processor, my boss had some stuff to which he needed access that was only available on the mag tape, which was before my time. he hired an employee named dorothy to work on that machine, and she was a weird one, always cranky, always complaining about obscure medical ailments. one day in wintertime i heard a chanukah song on the radio. i NEVER hear anything but christmas stuff in the winter, so i was really tickled, and i was smiling when i came in to work. dorothy asked me why i was smiling (i mean, i am a pretty friendly person, but i don't remember ever seeing dorothy smile, so maybe it was an alien facial expression to her). i told her about hearing the chanukah song. she frowned. "if you don't believe in jesus christ, what have you got to sing about?" she asked me. this is where speaking within the other party's bubble comes in. "his father?" i asked. (i had already been an atheist for a decade, being in my mid-20s by then, but trust me, this wasn't the moment to yell "there is no god!") she frowned more deeply, not knowing what i meant, so i added, "you know... god?" now she looked positively pissed off. "well," she declared, "the catholics have been suffering a lot longer than the jews anyway!" with that she huffed off. think i should've brought up atheism at that point? it was none of her business anyway. i'm not out to convince folks there are no gods. i'd rather not get beaten up over it, though. i thought she was ridiculous and not worth any more effort on my part. i attempted to answer her questions. i'd have answered more had she asked them. i'm pretty easygoing. i still like chanukah songs, too. g
I'm 65 have been a widower for over a dozen years.
genessa comments on Jan 27, 2019:
it works that way here too. this is different from other dating sites in that it gives everyone a chance to get to know one another here, instead of flinging people into restaurants and bed. the best way, i think, to use this site is to look at all the categories and see what people are saying, and respond when you have something to say. you'll find out where people's heads and hearts are. post on a topic other than your search for a mate (that's covered already by your profile bio and saying you're open to meeting whomever it is you are open to meeting) and let people respond to that, likewise. it's a lot better than just using this like a normal dating site. g
Definition of "baby boomer" -- is born between 1946 and 1964, and they call it a generation.
genessa comments on Jan 27, 2019:
i am not buying investopedia's timeline ending in 1964. my whole life i heard the boom ended in 1955. suddenly it gets nine more years? of course it's two different generations if you expand it that way, but i do NOT expand it that way. i hold to the original definition: 1945 (not 6) to 1955. wikipedia tries to get out of this by dividing everyone into leading edge boomers and late boomers (nice pun) but i'm still not buying it. if there were two booms, so be it, but the one to which i belong is the one wiki is calling leading edge, and it further asserts that over half the boomers fall into that timeline. wiki is a source that uses other sources, and sometimes it's better or worse than other times. in the article i saw, the sources are cited clearly. one source is of interest, i think: "Doug Owram argues that the Canadian boom took place from 1942 to 1960, but that culturally boomers everywhere were born between the late war years and about 1955 or 1956" i think that's wrong too, by virtue of being too narrow (i was born in 1952 and i am about as culturally boomish as you can get) but it's got its value, especially in not extending the boom a decade beyond its real end. g
What do you know about Paganism/Wicca etc?
genessa comments on Jan 27, 2019:
not much except it's neither "black magic" nor of great interest to me, since i have no desire to worship anything or anyone, be it nature or a god or a devil or a grapefruit. oh, nature (as an all-encompassing label) and grapefruits (as a specific entity) exist, whereas gods and devils don't, but existence is only one issue. the act of worshiping itself is also an issue. i just don't see the need. g
Is A Tax On The Ultrarich The Best Way To Eradicate Extreme Poverty? : Goats and Soda : NPR
genessa comments on Jan 27, 2019:
there is no single way. we need a few different things at once. this could be one of them. making the tax rates truly progressive, with the richest paying the largest percentage, would be another thing. sales tax is one of the unfairest taxes of all since everyone pays the same rate and there really is no way for it to be otherwise; either there is a sales tax or there isn't. the sales tax should go. the social safety net should be expanded, not otherwise as some suggest, because it does NOT encourage laziness but rather encourages spending, since people using that net need the money for such extravagances as rent, food, medicine (well, meds should be part of medicare for all, but i mean as things stand now), transportation to and from work and school, education -- you know, stuff the ruling class thinks poor people don't deserve. making those things more readily available and affordable/free would certainly help to reduce poverty. infrastructure (not the kind that just exists to give kickbacks to criminals, but legitimate stuff like repairing roads and bridges, building affordable housing, upgrading airports, stuff like that) creates jobs and makes life safer and easier. a living wage instead of a paltry minimum wage would help. yeah, it is by no means just one thing that will cure this particular disease. it's systemic. it requires an attack from all sides. g
What do you all feel makes a good bio?
genessa comments on Jan 27, 2019:
i am not picky about structure as long as it's grammatical and can be read with minimum cursing and book-throwing. crucial topics are entirely dependent on whose bio it is. i can't answer that in advance. if someone wants to talk about his/her sex life and someone else wants to talk about his/her art, fine, as long as they keep my interest. g

it is, alas, likely, unless we continue to make our feelings known in the strongest possible way. the democratic house has already introduced a bill to prevent future shutdowns but the senate is not likely to pass it -- hell, mcconnell is not likely to bring it to the floor for a vote at all. so it's anybody's guess. trump is just stupid enough to try again. g
Best old school comedy team
genessa comments on Jan 27, 2019:
most of them were wonderful. i was never much of an abbott and costello fan, and rowen and martin were the weakest part of laugh-in, but the rest were great. some who are missing: nichols and may, the three stooges (whom i did not like but others sure did), allen and rossi (again whom i personally did not like) and the keystone cops (more of a gang than a team). there were also martin and lewis (not my cuppa), monty python's flying circus (wonderful), stiller and meara (quite nice), cheech and chong (sometimes funny), congress of wonders (limited but hysterical), even the monkees (well, that's what they were hired to be, and they were as good as the material handed to them and sometimes better -- try to find nesmith portraying a bored princess) and firesign theatre (fabulous). amos and andy may have been, and certainly are now, offensive, but they were immensely popular; the original saturday night live cast couldn't be beat (do the blues brothers count as a separate team?). so for me, personally, it's minnie's boys, four or five crazy guys, original snl, all three at the top. smobro had a great show and they were funny but as a comedy team... well, they beat rowen and martin by a mile anyway! g
How do you feel about people?

well, what do you expect? many people are young when they marry. of course they don't understand how relationships work. good luck getting someone to follow your advice about aligning beliefs and goals. that's not how humans tend to function. but even when people work at a relationship and have a clue how to do so, that is no guarantee things will work out, either. some people with not a lot in common just love each other and keep doing so until death doth them part. g

um, we don't believe in adam and eve. that's why we're on this site, remember? do you have google? you can find many, many scientific sites to explain evolution, and one of the first things you'll find out is that it took a long, long time for fish to morph (not directly) into humans. it's not actually "a real thinker: about which one is real." it's actually a no-brainer. there are evidence-based facts readily available regarding evolution. go look them up. g

um... no they have not indicated that they are willing to provide wall funding. they have indicated that they are willing to talk about, TALK ABOUT, border security, but only if and when the government reopens, the point being that no conversation is even possible with the government remaining closed. the president made a very, very bad-faith offer... two of them. his first one was that if he could have almost six billion bucks for his wall, he would temporarily restore the perfectly fine daca he destroyed, and temporarily not deport certain people who weren't being deported anyway (and shouldn't be) until he decided they should be. in other words, the schoolyard bully stole your lunch money and stood on your neck and then said, hey, if you give me your lunch money every day from now on and lick my boots too, i'll get off your neck for 10 minutes and lend you back the lunch money i've already stolen, for interest of course. that's good faith? the new offer is three weeks of function in exchange for his wall, or he'll either shut it down again or he'll declare an emergency when in fact there is no emergency (at least none he hasn't created himself). yah, good faith my ass. g

what equal pay for everyone? there is no such plan. what kind of bullshit is this? no one has called for such a thing. what reasonable, nonshitty people want is equal pay for equal work, not equal pay for everyone. duh. if a woman performs heart surgery and a man performs heart surgery and they're equally qualified and equally experienced, they should be paid the same... as each other, not as a burger-flipper, who, on the other hand, should be paid a living wage. women earn 70 cents on every dollar a man makes for EQUAL WORK. that shouldn't be. how does that get conflated with some idiotic tale about equal pay for everyone? stop promoting bullshit lies, will ya? g

Why are so many people spending their social exchange time with the "aint it f.
genessa comments on Jan 24, 2019:
why? because information is power, trump and his trumpkins are destroying the country, and we love our country. positive thoughts don't save us. votes, protests, phone calls to our elected officials, letting them know what we want, exposing crimes and demanding that they be cut short and punished and further crimes prevented, THOSE things will save us. it doesn't reinforce our impotence. it gives us the power that should be ours. it's not socially conditioned at all; what we're socially conditioned to do is lie back and take it. you have it totally backwards! g

genessa comments on Jan 24, 2019:
there are such groups, surely. i wouldn't go within an inch of them but they're surely there. on the off chance no one has made one, you have a high enough level to make one yourself (also a high enough level to have looked around and seen that there are trump supporters here, although some of them are bots and others of them are trolls; some sincerely like trump). um, if you do find or create one, don't invite me! g
Is there such a thing as universal justice?
genessa comments on Jan 24, 2019:
it is subjective. for some it's an eye for an eye. for others it's turn the other cheek. for some it's selective between the two and unfortunately which gets selected for you might depend on the color of your skin, your religion or lack thereof, or anything else that's irrelevant to the situation at hand. g

I was to the store the other day and had a Muslim check out clerk.
genessa comments on Jan 23, 2019:
i think that it is not because of their religious belief that you were inconvenienced. i think it was poor planning on the parts of all employees concerned. let me give you an example: many years ago, a woman walked into a cvs pharmacy and tried to fill a legitimate prescription for birth control pills, and the pharmacist refused to fill it, claiming that to do so would violate his religious beliefs. it didn't matter to him whether the pill was in fact for contraception, dysmenorrhea or some other purpose; he would not fill the prescription. now, there could have been several outcomes/solutions here. one would be that cvs fired him since his religious beliefs disqualified him from handling all aspects of the job. that didn't happen. another would be that cvs could've had more than one pharmacist there so that when this sort of thing came up, the customer could still be served. failing that, they could've corrected the situation even though they hadn't thought of it before (maybe the pharmacist never told them his limitation). that didn't happen either. another would be that the pharmacist could've found work in a religious institution where his limitation would be expected and supported. that obviously hadn't happened, nor had the next solution: he could've realized that his religious beliefs made pharmacy an unsuitable profession for him. no. what happened was that cvs stood behind him. i will never EVER shop at cvs. now imagine a religious jewish butcher. he has some options too. he can go work in a kosher butcher shop (analagous to the pharmacist's working for a religious institution). he can go apply for a job at a secular butcher shop and not mention his limitation to anyone and wait for it to come up and then refuse to serve the person who ordered pork. bad move, right? or he can go apply for that same job and ask the boss if he can call upon another employee to handle the pork requests. if the boss says no, i only need to have one butcher on duty at one time, or i only want one butcher period, then sorry, that butcher can't have that particular job and it's not discrimination. if the boss says no, you stupid jew, i don't deal with your type, then it IS discrimination. so far so simple, right? now ALL the supermarket you visited had to do was put up a sign for that checkout clerk saying "no pork in this aisle" and you'd have gone to another aisle and that would've been that! i bet other muslims and jews would've been pretty happy to have an aisle just for them too lol it's no worse than having a "fewer than 10 items" aisle, after all. i don't think you were inconvenienced HORRIBLY by things as they worked out, but they really should have planned better. if the clerk never mentioned it to her boss, it's ...

genessa comments on Jan 23, 2019:

genessa comments on Jan 23, 2019:
a real nothingburger. i wish nobody had ever come up with the term "pc." people use it to label stuff that's really not part of a plan or plot at all, but just common sense, common decency and a lack of bigotry and racism. if you don't yell obscenities at minorities, it's probably not because you're trying to be pc. it's probably because you're not a horrible person. g

The Humanist Dilemma: Is It Kosher to Pretend Food Is Kosher? - TheHumanist.com
genessa comments on Jan 23, 2019:
my guy doesn't require me to keep a kosher home but he won't eat pork. he'll eat shellfish, which is just as tref as pork, and he'll happily eat a cheeseburger, but he won't eat pork. that's his thing, and yes, it's because we're jewish (i was never observant and am an atheist at any rate). i could easily slip him pork. he wouldn't know the difference. i sometimes serve him sausage... made of chicken or turkey. i save the pork ones for myself. but i could fool him. he'd never know. he has no clue what pork tastes like compared to other meats, and he also has alzheimer's. i could save myself a lot of trouble and even some money, since pork is so cheap, fooling him. so why don't i do it? because i love him and he loves me and i require honesty from him and it would be hypocritical to do so without giving him honesty in return. simple. it doesn't matter that he is selective about his kashruth. it doesn't matter that he's relatively ignorant about his own religion. what matters is we owe each other honesty, and it should come naturally to us because we love and respect each other. g

genessa comments on Jan 23, 2019:
first of all, orwell did imagine at least that, and more. this is nothing. second of all, it's not an invasion of privacy, since the cops CAN run your plates already. what's so different about this, except the speed with which the info can be retrieved, info that might even save lives, since it has nothing to do with corporate greed (you've made zero case for that outrageous statement). a whole LOT of what goes on these days, and for a long time in fact, is the result of corporate greed. we are already living in a largely orwellian world. however, just saying something is connected to corporate greed with no evidence and not even the faintest hint of logic just dilutes the perception of the real problems and throws them all into the realm of conspiracy theory. that's not helpful. g
Does anybody else have a problem with thinking while speaking?
genessa comments on Jan 23, 2019:
"Any suggestions as to how to improvise in real-time when you don't have the slightest clue about what is being asked from you?" yes. find out what is being asked of you. you can do this by speaking. ASK! if you are making a speech and not expecting an answer, make the question part of the speech. for example: "when you ask me to speak about 'people's relationship with their parents' are you speaking about young children or adult offspring? if you mean children, then bla bla bla bla. [you can drill down from there too if there are two paths.] on the other hand, if you mean adult offspring, bla bla bla [and likewise you can drill down]." if you're stuck because you have not thought about that topic before, make the confession of that part of your speech. "i confess i have not given this topic a lot of thought. i wonder what i would do if...." adapt! g

I rebelled against my atheist parents by going to church.
genessa comments on Jan 23, 2019:
if you went to church in secret, how and whom were you showing that your folks couldn't control you? actually, i don't know that cliche where the folks believe but the son rebels by being an atheist. that may be a cliche among religious people; it's not how most atheists realized that there were no gods. it may be how the parents look at it. well, it would be how they looked at it, if they were religious. in addition, it's interesting that someone would go to a church as an act of rebellion. why a church? is the opposite of atheism christianity? are there NO other religions in the world? pardon me for being skeptical, but your story has some holes in it. g
I have a question which, in these politically correct times, is probably inappropriate but whatever,...
genessa comments on Jan 23, 2019:
these are most certainly not politically correct times. these are times in which more and more people feel free to rebel against what they perceive as political correctness but which in fact is just common decency. it's not politically correct not to yell the n word at someone. it's just decency. women's voices have been controlled by society in many countries (notably japan, where women don't even BREATHE the same way men do -- and i am not assuming; i lived there for 10 years and, in a drama class i taught, literally had to teach the female students how to breathe!) and present-day united states is no exception. my complaint is actually the opposite of yours; i hear too many women using the glottal fry, thinking it's sexy when in fact it's just irritating. i don't know which women you've been hearing. i also don't know what the hell that question has to do with pc (or decency for that matter). g

Need a date for Valentines to feel like a girl again....
genessa comments on Jan 23, 2019:
you do not need a date to feel like a girl (although i don't know why you would want to feel like a girl when you could feel like a woman, even a young woman if you chose; it is up to you of course). you are in charge of what you feel you are. i am not saying you shouldn't seek a date for valentine's day. there is nothing wrong with a v-day date, and you should do as you like. i am just saying you shouldn't let something like that define you, and your post makes it seem as if you ARE letting it define you. hey, if you wanna feel like a goldfish, make yourself feel like a goldfish! or the queen of sheba! but YOU do it. if you want someone else to do it, you're setting yourself up for, at best, disappointment. g

when the jacuzzi is broken or closed for cleaning. when i am in the pool working out and small children come and think that out of the whole pool, under my legs is the best place to swim. when the jewish community center, where i work out, is closed due to bomb threats. what i DO like about it: 1. no one stares. most of them are older and fatter than i, and those who aren't are assholes. 2. best pool in town (nicely heated too) 3. hot and friendly young lifeguards who do not disdain the elderly 4. wonderful locker with a shower that fits my size and condition 5. no one minds you walking around naked no matter who you are or how you look 6. you can take as many towels as you want 7. the wringer for the swimsuits is a blessing 8. upstairs there is a nice weight room that i don't use and a walking/running track i sometimes do, as well as tables and comfy chairs in the clean, wide hall (with outlets so i can charge my phone or plug in my computer), so if i need to have a meeting, i don't have to invite someone into my messy house 9. on fridays they sell challah, with or without raisins! 10. no tv except in the lounge and it's rarely on; i've never seen it tuned to fox 11. they fixed the jacuzzi! g
Why are so many men visiting my profile?
genessa comments on Jan 23, 2019:
i am female and not seeking a date or anything like a date and i visit profiles all the time, without regard to gender. visiting a site doesn't automatically mean sexual interest. if you post or comment something i think is dumb, i want to see who said that. if you post or comment something i think is smart, i want to see who said that. if i move my mouse and it goes past your name or picture, oops, i've hovered. maybe i even go back and see who i hovered over, maybe even visit the page. but i'm a woman so you'd think maybe i was checking you out for, i don't know, potential fatherhood? rofl! so men want to see who you are, too, for a variety of reasons, most of them having nothing whatsoever to do with physical attraction. and not to deflate you or anything, but i haven't checked your profile yet so i don't even know if you're that interesting. g

Hello my beautiful heathen friends.
genessa comments on Jan 23, 2019:
i never connected god with death, so that isn't the scary part for me. when i believed in a god i didn't have any conception of a heaven or hell; judaism doesn't have the same kind of afterlife christianity does. so that, to me, isn't a scary part of atheism. it's scary, but no less scary than before i was an atheist. since i can't think of anything else scary about atheism, i guess nothing. g
