@TheMiddleWay the difference is that one atheist says "i don't believe in any gods," which doesn't mean that s/he believes there are none, just that there are none in which s/he believes, and the other says "i believe there are no gods," which means there is an act of belief going on. the latter includes the former but the former doesn't necessarily include the latter. one element is the confidence s/he has that there are no gods. g

@motrubl4u it doesn't have to be acceptable to you. it's not actually your business. you also don't know if those people subsist on that or if they're treating themselves. in addition junk food is cheaper than healthful food. apart from not necessarily knowing about the dangers of junk food, some people/families may be making the decision to eat every day instead of eating twice a week healthily, as it's not healthy, especially for children, not to eat regularly. it's a tough choice and there is no good choice to choose, but it's NOBODY'S DAMNED BUSINESS unless someone wants to HELP those people instead of criticizing them. g

i disagree. there is plenty of evidence that no gods exist but there is no PROOF that no gods exist. the evidence is that people have caught their parents putting presents under trees and quarters under pillows and those things are strong evidence, although not definitive proof, that there is no santa claus and there is no tooth fairy. this can be extrapolated to apply to deities as well, since every description of a deity can be busted as soon as the deity is ascribed an action, and the action doesn't happen. also, as i have said above, an atheist can simply fail to believe in deities OR actively believe that there are no deities. every atheist is not alike, and i think those are the two main types. furthermore, as isaac asimov points out, he doesn't need to waste his time being unsure when he feels so sure (and there is nothing to counter that feeling). it's just not worth it. g

i think there are two types of atheist. there are those who do not believe in any deities and those who also believe there are no deities. i am the latter type. i find the nonexistence of unicorns, the tooth fairy, santa claus, leprechauns and all that jazz compelling enough, despite lack of proof that they don't exist, that i feel able to apply the same criteria by which i not only don't believe in them but believe firmly in the lack of them to any deities as well. that's me. i'm not alone so i won't say JUST me, but i won't say that every atheist feels that way along with me. thus is think there are two types. i'm not horribly worried about it. g

@TheGreatShadow yay! good news! now it's a race against time, because that sort of thing really can't wait. here is something that happened to me that is not even remotely comparable in severity but is worth mentioning because it shows that you have to push sometimes (my happy ending was fortuitous, though; my pushing didn't help me because i had nowhere to push anymore, but someone else intervened). my insurance, through which i receive my medicare and medicaid benefits, sent me a letter at the end of last year saying that although they had not been providing transportation to the silver sneakers providers (health clubs with special memberships for seniors) -- they DID pay for the membership, just not the transportation -- starting in january this year they WOULD be providing transportation. yay! good news for me! so i called to schedule transportation for a day i wanted to go and was told, no, we don't do that. yes, you do. you sent me a letter. really? let me check. hold. hold music. ho hum. are you still there? i checked and we don't do that. but you sent me a LETTER! well, hold again and let me check again. hold. hold music. the upshot was, i was placed on hold while the employee checked thrice, and it turns out that the letter didn't say what i clearly saw that it said; it said that they'd send me a bus pass for public transportation. well, first of all, i can't walk to the bus stop. it's FAR. second of all, even if i could walk that far, it's SNOWY and ICY out! and third of all, the bus doesn't go to the health club. oh and fourth of all, they had sent me a letter saying they'd PROVIDE transportation, just as they already did for medical services: door-to-door service via a cab or other transportation service. she wasn't willing to put me on hold and check anymore so i gave up. but a couple weeks later i got a notice of denial for the ride i had never taken! not only were they not going to give me the ride, they were going to rub it in and maybe charge me for it! so i called and got a person with a brain. she said that the company has to send a letter every time they deny a service, even if it's just saying "no" on the phone, and it didn't mean i owed anything -- but she felt she had to apologize because that service should NOT have been denied, the company DOES pay for door-to-door transportation to and from the health club, on my plan only, not other plans. and the person to whom i spoke could clearly see which plan i was on. i was told what to say if it happened again. again, yay! so two days ago i called to schedule a ride for monday, that is tomorrow, and i had NO problem at all. i'm gonna go work out in the pool and sit in the jacuzzi (and there is a free movie with free popcorn at the other end of ...

@CharlesBorges oh PLEASE. you're telling me, a woman, what THE woman wants? can we dump that myth right away? every woman wants something different but most women, whatever else they want, do want a man who loves her and whom she loves. we're not cave people. we're not expecting lions to jump out at us, and if we are waylaid by armed attackers, height won't matter at ALL. g
Does anyone else have this type of problem.

i wear vinyl sandals from walgreen's, even in the snow. i have neuropathy too, also extra wide feet, and my toes won't tolerate closed shoes. they're not dressy but i've seen uglier shoes that purported to be dressy. anyway, i don't care! i wear them because they're the only shoes i CAN wear. ...

@bleurowz they're all i ever wear, rain, shine, snow, brrr! even if i dress up, i wear 'em. if people can't understand, too bad for them :-)) i looked at dawgs' website and a bunch of them were on sale, and a bunch in colors i don't have (i only have tan and black) were not. but they had other styles i hadn't seen, all REALLY casual, makes the ones i showed you look positively formal by comparison! plus i can't afford to buy enough to earn the free shipping. but you know what i used to wear all the time before i injured that big toe just ONE time too many? chinese cotton maryjanes! g
Why is there no place to put or see a persons height?

@CharlesBorges it only matters if you decide it matters. and i read that line the first time! now tell me exactly why it is important for a man to be taller than a woman. g

getting through it is rough enough, as though you're coughing up dough while teetering on a bough, not as easy as it ought to be. but i've HEARD canadians say "aboot." so at least some do say it that way. g

A good example of why I don't support "Free College for Everyone".
genessa comments on Feb 14, 2019:
your objection and the meme both presuppose some things that are not true. one is that the purpose of college is to prepare the student for employment. some college courses do. we don't want doctors who didn't go to med school. but the overall purpose of college is to teach students to think, ...

@Captain_Feelgood again, the implication is there. there is no straw man in my argument. it's bearing, not baring, and what i think has a huge bearing on it because unlike people who unjustly call others trolls, i actually understand what i read. there are no examples, elsewhere or here, of my making straw man arguments. what is obvious to you is that you are yourself a troll and i have no use for trolls. i bid you goodbye but you probably won't see my goodbye because i block trolls. g
