I think there are a lot of non religious people who believe in transcendence of self and similar things. I know a handful. They don't tend to be organized and aren't as easily identified but they exist. Guess you don't have to count them as secular but then maybe it's not a question of only ...

@rcandlish whose truth? you speak as if there is one "truth," like one big thing we have to find in a gigantic scavenger hunt called life. that's a good way to miss out on what life really is about, and no, don't ask me what that is, because it's not one thing either, and it certainly isn't the same for everyone. g

@irascible yes but those are not names for christmas. "whatever you celebrate" i would not have questioned, but "whatever you call it" means call christmas. you may certainly wish someone a merry saturnalia (and i will gladly wish it back upon you -- and there is nothing wrong with occasional appropriate cheekiness or even rudeness!) but you won't be using another name for christmas. i'm being tough on you, my friend! that's just how i am -- picky picky picky! but i can't help it. i'm a stickler for... something or other. g

How would you explain Easter without referreing it to as the ressurection of Christ?
FitVeganDancer comments on Mar 30, 2018:
Easter is based on the story of the reserection of Jesus. There is no point denying it is based on a religious belief. Just explain to her that some people believe that story and others do not. The easter bunny is based on an old German tradition. Simple honesty is the best approach.
genessa replies on Dec 22, 2018:
easter is actually based on ishtar, pronounced the same as easter, from scientific american: "Easter was originally the celebration of Ishtar, the Assyrian and Babylonian goddess of fertility and sex. Her symbols (like the egg and bunny) were and still are fertility and sex symbols (or did you actually think eggs and bunnies had anything to do with the resurrection?)" https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/anthropology-in-practice/beyond-ishtar-the-tradition-of-eggs-at-easter/ the fact that christians coopted the celebration (keeping the name, if not its spelling) doesn't mean that the holiday is "based on" the resurrection of "christ." it means it's been CHANGED to represent that. g

genessa replies on Dec 22, 2018:
@MichaelSpinler regardless of how one measures intelligence, having a degree doesn't make anyone anything except the holder of a degree; it doesn't even make them eligible for a higher salary in most fields. it most certainly doesn't add to intelligence. your friend is confusing intelligence with formal education, and probably would also confuse formal education with education itself. this is not by any means a slam on formal education, but the degree is the acknowledgement that someone has undergone the formal education. the degree isn't the education. the formal education also doesn't make a person more intelligent although it can help a person better channel his/her intelligence. there is no guarantee that it will. all of this presupposes that no one even cheats to get the degree, and that in itself is a false supposition, but as i say i am leaving that aspect out in making my statement. your friend doesn't just have a different take on measuring intelligence, or even a different definition of intelligence. s/he is just plain wrong. g

@RJWells um no, i do not have that experience, sorry. i am not here for dating. i am with the man i love and he doesn't look like an actor or a rock star. some people might not think he was hot at all, but i came to love him within a few months of meeting him. was it love at first sight? no. is that the only way to fall in love? is that even the only way to get to know someone? no, it's not. as for time, what's the rush? do you want it done FAST or do you want it done RIGHT? by the way, no, it's not the first thing you know about anyone online. you don't know what i look like unless you go to my profile, and that's only because i put some pictures of myself (other than my baby picture) on there. i didn't have to. i chose to. (since i'm not into the dating part of the site, it would be quite reasonable for me to post pictures of my cats instead.) i am not looking for romance but i do expect people to consider what i say before they consider what i look like. i do the same for others. so, for you yes. for me, no. g p.s. imagine i was single and wanted to find a guy here and someone contacted me and he didn't look attractive to me. you assum ei would say ehhh and ignore him completely? how rude would THAT be, and how STUPID, since he might be a really cool guy who didn't happen to have a handsome face. SOME people are NOT shallow. imagine that!

Darn those Vegans/Vegetarians, they murder innocent plants just so they can devour them with pleasure.
genessa replies on Dec 16, 2018:
@Triphid yes i feel terribly guilty eating my okra but i do love it... and my lox, too. i'm an omnivore, as opposed to an herbivore or a carnivore, but i am not a real omnivore because i don't eat thinks that are not actually food (such as coca cola or twinkies) or anything with which an animal thinks or makes love... or celery. i don't like celery. g
Wow is the majority of people here OVER 50?
Bobbyzen comments on Dec 16, 2018:
Does that excite you? Or turn you off?
genessa replies on Dec 16, 2018:
@RJWells really? it doesn't depend on how kind she is, how smart she is, how much she likes you, whether or not she has any good or bad habits or whether she can cook/split an atom/fix a carburetor? it depends on how she LOOKS? g

Are women less ethical than men?
ProudMary comments on Dec 16, 2018:
I don't know about ethical but based on my experiences in working with men and women, some women have a streak of viciousness that I've never seen in a man.
genessa replies on Dec 16, 2018:
@ProudMary that's still a pretty specific venue. i did understand that you meant in your experience. i was just clarifying that we cannot rely solely on that. g
Could a genius be considered a peer...if?
genessa comments on Dec 15, 2018:
peer of whom, in what? (i don't see a poll here. did you mean to add one?) if someone knows stuff, who cares how s/he learned it? but being a genius has nothing to do with that. iq is a measure of potential. g

@AJimboShep82 in WHAT field of study? you didn't MAKE a point. i think you missed mine, though. g

genessa replies on Dec 16, 2018:
my experience is otherwise. i have seen viciousness in both genders and while, because of society rather than any inherent tendencies, it may be expressed differently in general by men and by women, i have not noticed a difference in intensity. however, it is never wise to trust small samples. it is also unwise to generalize, whether based on small samples or based on what society expects of us. g
