@Deb57 hard to tell since he seems to have fled. thing is, in case anyone is wondering why calling yourself a nice guy isn't a turn-on to women, it is just one step above "i know how to treat a woman," which implies that all women are the same. presenting yourself as a nice guy means you will appeal to all... and that might be ALL you have to appeal to all. not "reads books," not "plays tennis," not "likes to drink on saturdays," nothing personal, just "nice guy," generic, and why wouldn't a woman just collapse at the very thought of that? g

i have every respect for those who gave their lives but i have no illusions either than those who died in wwi (which is not what veteran's day is about) did so for our way of life. they did so for reasons that most people don't even understand, and didn't at the time, either. even if you buy that it was about the assassination of the archduke ferdinand, which is only one small trigger, what has that got to do with our way of life? we can appreciate and respect their sacrifice without making it about something it's not about. g

@MichelleGar1 i just did a little search and found that quantum leap is being shown regularly on a channel i don't get called elrey. if you get that, you can see ql on weekdays! one of the episodes it is showing -- tomorrow i think -- is dreams. i think dreams is a favorite with a lot of people because it's spooky, and it is compelling in its way, but it is badly written, and this is all the more unusual because it has a deborah pratt script, and she's usually so good! i mean it's not dreadful or anything, but one line stands out for me, and pardon me, i haven't seen this episode for at least a decade, so i won't get it exactly right, but at one point sam and al are looking at the datebook of the guy into whom sam has leapt, or maybe someone else who's been killed (see, i told you it's been at least a decade) and sam says, of one appointment, that it's with a "japanese bigwig." now, japanese he could tell, perhaps, by the guy's name, but bigwig? how would he know, just from the datebook, unless it said "japanese bigwig"? and if it did, he'd find that odd and say something about it (or al would). so that didn't ring true and threw me off right away. no, i don't look for stuff like that! it just jumped up and hit me! funny how when you love a show, you want all the episodes to be the very best! but i'd watch that episode in an instant if i could only get that channel. g

genessa comments on Nov 10, 2018:
can't time be real AND a way of controlling the masses? but i think the latter is just silly. time was a concept long before there even WERE masses. it's a slightly incorrect concept, since the real thing is time-space. not everything is a conspiracy to control the masses. really. g
genessa replies on Nov 11, 2018:
@darien75 wrong. time is measured for us earthlings by the sun, the rotation and orbit of our planet, yes observed but not controlled by man. our (and others') birth, maturing, death, decacy, all controlled by time but while observed by man, not controlled by man (murderers excluded). appointments do not define time. that's man's use of it, or misuse of it. that isn't the same thing as the concept of time, or even the concept of measuring time. g

@MichelleGar1 i guess if the series wasn't so full of good episodes we wouldn't be here talking about it, right? i have to say an episode that was pretty good but not one of my favorites at first became meaningful to me in 1995 (which i think is after the series had ended, but it was all over the place in syndication, and i had every episode on tape -- necessary because i lived in japan at the time). it is the episode in which sam leaps into a young erstwhile bank robber whose father has died; his brother wants revenge on those who took the family farm. sam himself is conflicted because he never made it to his own father's funeral, which is the situation for one of the brothers, too, perhaps the one he is inhabiting (it's been a while now and i am working from memory). at any rate, my father died suddenly while i was in japan, and i could not attend his funeral. i was shattered and that episode helped me immensely. i wrote to bakula about it and he sent me back a sympathy card, which was nice of him. g

@WayneDalton lol. the trouble with some folks, and i don't know you so i cannot say, so i am not assuming, but it's important enough to mention, is that they cannot tell the difference between who they are and what their bad habits are. "i smoke -- that's who i am!" would be an example, right? that's not part of one's personality (though it can be so ingrained it seems to be one). so yes, be yourself, but if you think you should change some specific things, don't be afraid to do that for fear of changing your identity. (creative people in particular sometimes have this fear -- like, they're depressed or anxious but afraid that if they go to a shrink they'll lose their creativity. it's not true but it's a common fear.) g

genessa replies on Nov 10, 2018:
@Mcflewster "opinions are not allowed" in the same line IS ditching opinions. also i don't know with whom you agree that it would be rude to ignore or deny someone's opinions; some opinions are ridiculous and should be ignored or denied. you cannot deny that the opinion IS the opinion of the speaker (example: "i think dogs are really martians in disguise and they're all out to kill us" is a ridiculous opinion and should be ignored or denied, but you can't deny that the speaker, if taken seriously, HAS that opinion). opinions based on facts are more valuable than opinions based on nothing, or based on lies. in addition, opinions based on nothing or based on lies will not be as likely to lead to facts (through exploration, experimentation, investigation) as opinions based on facts. g

NoMagicCookie comments on Nov 9, 2018:
Not fond of the term "atheism" as Atheist is not really an "ism". ism is defined as "a distinctive practice, system, or philosophy, typically a political ideology or an artistic movement." Not accepting the faith (belief without evidence) assertion that a god exists hardly qualifies as an ism.
genessa replies on Nov 9, 2018:
that is a very limited definition of "-ism." dictionary dot com widens it: 'a suffix appearing in loanwords from Greek, where it was used to form action nouns from verbs ( baptism ); on this model, used as a productive suffix in the formation of nouns denoting action or practice, state or condition, principles, doctrines, a usage or characteristic, devotion or adherence, etc. ( criticism; barbarism; Darwinism; despotism; plagiarism; realism; witticism; intellectualism )." i think atheism is, going by that, a perfectly fine ism, and if i have to label myself with regard to my disbelief in any gods, that is the label i choose. g

@OwlInASack lol i hide for a couple months at the end of each year. christmas is ubiquitous, and i feel as if it makes me invisible -- not even so much as an atheist but as a jew. did i tell this story here? i was in a car pool in which there was one driver and two passengers who just paid fpr gas instead of driving, so it was always the same car and always the same radio on during the ride. one day during the "holiday season" the radio played a chanukah song. i almost wet myself. that just doesn't happen! so i went into work feeling kind of as if my existence had been acknowledged. i must have looked happy because (if i recall) a coworker asked me why i was so cheerful, and i told her i'd heard a chanukah song on the radio. she frowned and said "if you don't believe in jesus, what have you got to sing about?" i had not told her i was an atheist. she hadn't asked. we weren't close. why would i bring it up for no reason? i also knew she wasn't very bright so i decided to couch my response in terms she could understand, from within her bubble. "his father?" i replied. she frowned again. "you know... god!" she frowned much more deeply at this. then she declared "well, the catholics have been suffering a lot longer than the jews anyway!" and stalked off. i didn't let that ruin my day. i just can't bring myself to give that much power to idiots and pardon me if i have told that story here before; it is often an appropriate tale to tell!. g

@MrLizard it is true that jews do not proselytize. i mean somewhere in there it is against the rules to do so. genessa replies on Nov 7, 2018:
@KillerQueer yes, they actually were making children. you see, the concept of homosexuality was not the same then as it is now; there wasn't even such a word. we would probably consider them bisexual in a limited way, rather than gay. married men having sex with a shy, not-yet-bearded boy was quite acceptable, as long as they were also having children with their wives. once a boy grew a beard he was no longer fair game, and if he sold his services, that was quite difference. it was supposed to be love, or at least an emotional attachment, not just sex, not even primarily sex, and it didn't make the adult man "gay" -- it was just another beautiful thing he did (yes, it was considered beautiful). what makes you think they were not reproducing? in fact in sparta there was less emphasis on the sexual aspect of the man-boy relationship then, say, in athens, so specifying sparta as the place where reproduction was impeded by these relationships is even less correct on that basis. g

genessa replies on Nov 7, 2018:
most democrats want to raise taxes... on people who make a shitload of money. that is appropriate. why shouldn't they? the people, on whom they want to raise taxes do not pay their fair share. you mention not getting services. what services to extremely wealthy people need? they do need some. they need bridges that do not collapse under them, and roads in good repair, and airports that are not an embarrassment. they need schools to educate the people who work for them, even though they themselves may prefer private education. they need healthy, productive people to work for them, not people who are starving, or cannot come to work because they can't afford to have their kids looked after, or who come to work sick because they have no health insurance. they need prisons to hold the most violent criminals, and they need courts to figure out who those are, and living conditions that don't turn people desperate enough to have to steal or die, which means we need better and cheaper housing, and health care, and fair laws that do not send people to prison for being poor, or black. all this BENEFITS the wealthy and is well worth the cost in taxes. so yeah, democrats want to raise taxes on such people... but not the poor, not the middle class. saying they want to raise taxes scares people because it sounds as if they want to raise taxes on everyone. everyone should pay their fair share and democrats want that, yes. don't YOU want that? oh and all those time bombs you mentioned? they're not time bombs until republicans plant bombs in them. you own a bunch of patents. good for you. do you own compassion? that's worth more than a bunch of patents. g

i will add that it wasn't just curiosity on the part of the blockee, because i was tagged over and over. she obviously wanted to keep the "fight" going, and i very clearly didn't. that's not ME being dramatic lol. g
How annoying is this?

that's odd. i don't think my post here was dramatic at all (i think it was pretty straightforward, actually), and i certainly wasn't dramatic in the post under discussion -- indeed, instead of being dramatic i just left. i decided to share my experience(because the go-between part was so unusual i thought y'all might find it interesting) in a relatively undramatic way. i am very surprised to see you call either my post (which you have seen) or any part of my conversation to which i refer (which i assume, perhaps incorrectly, that you have NOT seen) dramatic. g
The mid term elections won't stop Trump.
genessa comments on Nov 7, 2018:
not so. first of all, although the senate is still in charge of confirming nominees, all budgetary bills have to be initiated in the house, and the bills trump wants will NOT be initiated. yes, he will blame the dems. TOO BAD. and the house committees can investigate trump, demand his taxes, ...

@David1955 nope we haven't yet and we still might not, but this is an inroad. we may not win the war, and we may fall, but this was a kind of battle won, and it will strengthen us for many skirmishes, which we may also win. g

@LetzGetReal i don't happen to have the better part of an hour to devote to this. if you wanted to summarize i could consider it, but no, just on a whim i am not going to sit and stare at this screen to the exclusion of everything else just to see what this guy is talking about (you don't mention that). also i don't understand what "the basic and the interviewer" means. i have some common sense myself, and i don't even know whether you're showing me this to agree, disagree or other (lol) with what i said, but i stand by what i said at any rate. i certainly am not in the market for any apps. g
How Glad Are You That the Midterms Are Over?

Hopefully, there will be a reprieve on polical calls and emails wanting money.
