when our now-late sheltie, sarah, was a puppy, our cat, penny, had her second litter, and she was so neurotic about protecting them that we put sarah in a big cage when the kittens were downstairs. they wanted to go in and play with her, and there was much communicating between the thin bars. when they were big enough, sarah had the run of the house again and the kittens were her besties. now the two who loved her best, and she herself, are gone. we have a young dog, ramona, who is much smaller than a sheltie, and somewhat smaller than the father of those kittens, tevye. he's 15 now, and his surviving kids are 14. penny is 16 and a half. the dog will be two this month, and she loves tevye because he puts his arm around her and kisses her. she goes to him and begs for it. she even lets him sleep in her bed -- sometimes with her, sometimes alone, sometimes with his younger daughter, kuma. he has ramona trained! cats and dogs don't have to be enemies :-)) g

nope. the bible is a work of fiction. the fact that people lie about it or take it for true isn't the bible's fault. people did the best they could at the time. it was silly. i was raised in a secular jewish household. we didn't really talk about religion, though sometimes we talked about jewishness, as in ethnic identity (a phrase that didn't exist yet). my folks didn't like rock n roll and decided that long-haired boys were dirty and rebellious. i discovered that this wasn't necessarily so and decided that if i'd been wrong to accept that without question, there might be other beliefs/opinions i held that weren't true either. i examined everything i held as true and god went right out the window. easy peasy. no trauma, though a bit of a surprise. i was 15. g

misattributing a quotation isn't plagiarism. it's stupid and can so easily be checked, but it's not plagiarism -- unless you're misattributing it to yourself of course! plagiarism is in fact a serious problem but that's not what this poll is about, right? i've written about this before and the gist of what i think is that 1. you can and should check it before you post it; it IS important, and 2. even if the quotation isn't being attributed to the pictured party, it should at least jibe with the known ideas/feelings/position of the pictured party. it should also be clear WHETHER the words are being attributed or just reflective of this ideas/feelings/positions (for example, the gene wilder as willie wonke memes and the most interesting man in the world memes -- no one thinks those guys are really saying those things, but if the memes say something that don't FIT with those images, it's not just weird, it's dishonest). g

it is none of those things. it is likely mostly genetic. it is not something that should have a judgment attached to it; it just is what it is. humans are not alone in being sexually diverse. it's nobody's business who loves whom, and it's even kind of silly to try to find out where it comes from, as if it's a disease. it's not. furthermore, it doesn't really matter how we see it. it is what it is regardless of how someone sees it. it's like asking what you think of people's being tall, or short-waisted, or born in canada. it's a nonissue! g

i am totally against the idea of NOT giving pets away for free. the people who will use them badly will pay the "rehoming fee" i see everywhere, because they're usually profiting from that bad use. they can afford it. on the other hand, people who would rather spend the money on vet services and food and toys for the animal can't necessarily arrod the kinds of rehoming fees i see, sometimes hundreds of dollars! quite frankly, i think people who charge those fees, saying they're to prevent wicked people from getting the pets, are just trying to pretend they're not selling the pets, which of course they really are. so only rich people deserve pets? almost two years ago i was looking for a small dog because our old dog had died earlier that year, and we wanted another. everywhere i looked, no matter what the breed, including mixed breeds, no matter what the age, people wanted at least a couple hundred bucks for "rehoming." this was true online, on craig's list, everywhere. finally i made a post myself and i said my piece and what i was looking for, and a nice lady who had purchased a mixed-breed dog, only to find out her landlord wouldn't let her keep the pup, brought me the dearest little puppy and charged me nothing. we named her ramona and she is just a sweetheart. she has a good life. i could not have paid hundreds of dollars for her -- but a profiteer COULD have, and maybe, had i not taken her in, WOULD have. g
