@HarrySlick very good, you have turned to the "but what about" school of countering a statement. you're also dead wrong about trump and clinton, because clinton's affairs were consensual and trump is a rapist, but even were that not so, it's still irrelevant to the current situation, and it's STILL not what we're talking about. we were talking about melania. she is not being bullied and she is not a class act and she isn't very bright. nothing you say about other presidents or other first ladies or your first dog or your first orgasm changes that. oh, and that means you're not all that slick. g

genessa replies on Oct 11, 2018:
@AnneWimsey 1. the editors, and as i say, it's not censorship. it's editors doing their jobs (or in this case, not.) 2. you can know what the enemy is thinking without giving them a platform with no correction of the lies and errors, implying approval. 3. the same editors, except i wouldn't contribute to the wsj or usatoday.or the national enquirer. and it's not censorship! editors get to choose what's in their publication! i've BEEN a magazine editor. when i said yes this, no not that, it wasn't censorship. our magazine wasn't a thousand pages long. we chose what went in and what didn't, and if the article was crap it didn't get in. i've also been rejected by editors. they had the right to do it. i wasn't happy but i didn't delude myself that i'd been censored. i'd been rejected. MOST submissions get rejected. the president's submission didn't get rejected because he's president, even though his submission was full of lies. it could've been accepted with corrections. they didn't do that. they accepted it and presented it as if it was true. that's irresponsible. g

@AnneWimsey choosing not to publish one of a gazillion submitted op-ed pieces isn't censorship! it's editorial prerogative, and it should have been used. the fact that it's by the president is an even stronger reason to be sure it's suitable before printing it. if i sent in an op-ed piece they probably wouldn't publish it, and i'm a much better writer than the president, not to mention a better person, a more knowledgeable person (it doesn't take much) and a kinder person. an opinion piece that cites incorrect information needs to be fact-checked just like an article. that's not censorship. g

The stock market fell yesterday. It may go back up but something tells me we are in for at least, a major correction. Plus once all the tariffs hit, prices are predicted to go up. So, will those things make the Trump supporters pull back? I doubt it. They want an enemy and now it is other Americans....

genessa replies on Oct 11, 2018:
there is no one single thing called tv news. there is fox, which isn't news (or factual) and there is cnn, which is iffy, and there is msnbc, which in the evening is quite good and includes intelligent analysis but at other hours not really different from cnn, and there is local news, with talking heads who may or may not understand what they're reading from their teleprompters. there is also pbs and bbc and they're different again. i wouldn't paint it all with one brush. g

@gater i did not realize you were there. scientists who believe the big bang was not the beginning still believe it was the beginning of THIS universe, which will not expand forever -- that there may have been a universe or universes before this one, which contracted and then banged into the next one. none of them claims this IS how it it, just that it COULD be how it is, with varying degrees of likelihood. you, on the other hand, have the truth, i guess. g

alternatively i would make all these points to the professor and urge him/her to make them in turn to the student, so that the student would not be able to say "mind your own business" to you. if you can get something in writing and get other students in the class to sign it, and then present it to the professor, the professor might find that motivational. g

@A2Jennifer sorry, in terms of republicans, the brush is appropriately broad. we've had leaks from their meetings. we know what their agenda is AS AN ENTITY, not just personal agendas of individual republicans or even small groups of them. i know good politicians. i am personally acquainted with keith ellison (a democrat) and he is wonderful. i've dealt with mark dayton and he is wonderful too. i observed obama; he is wonderful. but i have not YET met a republican politicians, or seen one in action, whose actions were completely ethical, and most of them are quite the opposite. those who are not completely unethical are mostly unethical. look at susan collins. she knows damned well kavanaugh will attack roe v wade, never mind all his other issues, and she claims to be in favor of reproductive rights. someone got to her. i don't think it was that difficult to do. she is atypical not because she caved but because she even pretended to resist. g

Should healthcare providers be required to accept Medicaid/Medicare patients?

https://www.rd.com/health/wellness/wildly-overinflated-hospital-costs/ wildly overinflated hospital costs is the article's title. i have seen even more inflated prices (the title says costs) reported by patients who dared to look at their bills. no one is asking hospitals to lose money -- except red state governors who declined the medicaid expansion funds. hospitals close in those states. g

i think the best-intentioned men get it intellectually to the extent that they know women are not objects and would not rape, and are horrified when other men do rape -- but i don't think most men really know how normalized the threat is for women, to the extent that we have to take steps to protect ourselves that shouldn't be normalized, and to the extent that some women don't even protect each other, so entrenched in the culture are we. g
