he is more of a mussolini but i don't say that to excuse anything he says or does. he just isn't the orator hitler was. he's as ugly in spirit as hitler, and shares many common characteristics, all evil. overall, though, he is just (as robert deniro said as bob mueller on snl) "putin's little bitch." g

Rape is Gods or nature's way to secure that there is procreation......Not that I like or approve of it - but it happens in nature as well......
genessa replies on Sep 26, 2018:
first of all, there is no god. second of all, rape is not about procreation, or even sex. it's about power. it's about asserting dominance. that is why men rape men, which hasn't got anything to do with homosexuality; it's about power. sex is the tool, not the object. g

Statute of limitations as well
genessa replies on Sep 26, 2018:
it is odd that most states have a statute of limitations on rape, usually five or 10 years, but there apparently is no statute of limitations on the misdemeanor of crossing the u.s. border without permission, even if one's life has been exemplary for decades thereafter. obviously being born on the wrong side of an imaginary line and wanting a better life for one's family is a much more serious crime than assaulting a woman. g

genessa replies on Sep 26, 2018:
@Gareth yes, who is to blame IS an issue. it might not be THE issue. there is more than one issue. but as long as the victims are blamed, there will be no better protection from rape or of existing rape victims. it won't happen because they won't be thought to deserve it. women will continue to be told to prevent rape by not wearing short skirts. women will continue to be attacked if they come forward. women will continue to be disbelieved whether or not they come forward. blame is a BIG BIG BIG issue. this chart is not an exercise in tautology. it makes a valid and important point, and i stand by it. g

genessa replies on Sep 26, 2018:
that's silly. rape is caused by the people who rape, not by the victims. the people who rape 1. become rapists as soon as they rape, so that means the rape was caused by a rapist, whether or not he was a rapist beforehand. 2. if this is not the first time he has raped anyone, he's already a rapist. will you argue that one of the other named causes apply? the point was that it's not the victims' fault. it's the rapists' fault, whether or not they were rapists prior to the act in question. the chart doesn't trivialize rape but your argument against the chart does! g

@Ingi i am not assuming anything. i just don't need to read about it. if the book says we can be good without god, great, but why do i have to read it? i know that already. if the book says otherwise, ick. i assume the former is true or you wouldn't be posting it. but i am saying the topic is not one i need to read about. i have had numerous conversations about this, usually unpleasant, with various people saying no, you can't. if the book contains one more argument i never thought of, good, great, let people who are unsure read it. i don't feel i need to do that. g

@LenHazell53 more direct translation, admittedly similar "And if a man lie with mankind, as with womankind, both of them have committed abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them." keep in mind that leviticus also says "And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not do him wrong. The stranger that sojourneth with you shall be unto you as the home-born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt:" if they take this all so seriously they should be obedient to that as well. in fact it takes precedence because it is in the previous chapter and thus more important. it's all written by humans of course but if they're going to take it as the word of god, then cherrypicking is a bit cheeky! g

genessa replies on Sep 25, 2018:
@rabidazzle oh no, not at all! you're right -- that is probably a popular misconception. in fact, i think chosen people is a mistranslation or misnomer or something. i like to think of it as choosing people. (uh, you can't tell i'm jewish, right? but i am an atheist too. oddly, in judaism, that's not a dealbreaker! but i am jewish by culture, and while i like some of the customers and a good deal of the religion itself, nope, no gods, sorry, not my thing!) the deal was, god and the jewish people made a covenant and it cuts both ways. the jews could've said no, and then what? god goes out and finds someone else, right? so... choosing. but it is not written into judaism that only jews go to heaven, only jews are good, that jews are better than anyone else, or that everyone should be jewish. look at the commandments: jews have 613 to follow but only demand that nonjews follow seven! that does rather make it stand out among god-centered religions, most of which have some version of converting or killing infidels! that part DOES make it easier yet to continue to self-identify as jewish. it's a whole different ball game from christianity. still, while i am attracted to all that, it's certainly not the reason for me to try to be the best, kindest person i can be (the verdict is still out on my rate of success or failure there). g

giuliani knows zip. if he said it was sunny out i'd run in the house and get an umbrella, and i don't even like umbrellas. g
genessa replies on Sep 23, 2018:
@dalefvictor giuliani and trump are a good match for ignorance. i have a funny umbrella story to tell. in japan, where i lived for a decade, people were always offering me their umbrellas when it rained, and in june it rained a lot -- hot sticky june NEEDS rain. you'd think they would welcome the rain, but no, there they were with their umbrellas, always around my eye level, so when they offered to hold them over me they were really about to hit me in the eye, and when they offered to give them to me, likewise. i would say no thanks and they would think me crazy, no doubt. well, i developed a stock answer to make them laugh and feel better when i rejected their offers. i would smile and say "sato ja nai, yo." i'm not sato, you know. i'd pronounce it SA to. that's a common japanese surname, not quite smith, but maybe brown or miller -- that common. they'd frown, puzzled. of course i wasn't sato. i obviously wasn't japanese. but then i'd say "tokemasen, yo!" i won't melt, you know! then they'd laugh, because had i pronounced it sa TO, that would've been the word for sugar. i'm not sugar, you know. i won't melt, you know!" only a foreigner could get away with that joke. a japanese person wouldn't mispronounce sugar. so that would ease the tension and i could walk off in the rain without an umbrella. g

genessa replies on Sep 23, 2018:
@jeshuey if you think it hasn't, you've been paying attention to the wrong outlets. it shaved medicare costs, for the government. did every citizen get a better deal on the exchange, which is by no means all there is to the aca? no. it worked out for most, not all. medicaid expansion is part of the aca. it works great... in states where the governors actually implemented it. the exchanges work for a lot of people but they're not required to use them if they can get a better deal through employers or privately. those are part of aca too. aca forbids THOSE insurers to discriminate against women and against people with preexisting conditions too. aca is not an insurance company. it's a law and it has many parts. the parts about how medicare gets paid and for what saved a ton of money for the government to spend on benefits instead. g

genessa comments on Sep 23, 2018:
actually not buying into organized religion isn't what makes an atheist. not believing there are any gods is what makes an atheist. not being sure, or something like that, makes an agnostic. organized religion may go out the window along with these beliefs but that's not the point, is it? g
genessa replies on Sep 23, 2018:
@Surfpirate oh no, there is a BIG difference, but it pales beside the difference between any person who is against organized religion and an actual atheist OR antitheist. even an antitheist's focus is on not believing in any gods. you can be against organized religion and still believe in a deity, even a personal deity. if you don't believe in a deity, it goes without saying you don't buy into organized religion, but it simply is NOT a given, the other way around. g
