@CaroleKay Volcanoes have always interested me, in spite of their difficult to spell names. When we were in Washington, we used to go fishing on Mt St Helens. We would have spirited discussions as to which of the active volcanoes would erupt, Hood, Ranier, Baker, but St Helens was not on the list until 79. From my in-laws back yard you could see Hood and turn around and see St Helens. We visited them the month before she blew and were surprised that we couldn't go there to go fishing. When it went I was glad we were in Texas. I've visited it twice since then and have been amazed at the power that was unleashed in just a few seconds.

The black gumbo soils are very rich and the warm weather allows a long growing season. The Louisiana Iris is actually a swamp plant and makes a good pond filter plant. Mine developed a root ball of nearly 100 pounds in one season, but the blooms were worth it.

@Tenacious The Spanish will come ion handy, since many of the locals will speak either creole or Spanish when they don't want you to know what they are saying. A good site for the beginner https://belize.com/ The people are some of the friendliest you'll ever want to meet, until you've had a fresh 2 pound avocado, you don't know what it really tastes like. The pineapple, bananas, mangoes are to die for. If he likes fruit, tell him to ask the locals which fruit stand they go to, the operators will tell you what is good today and what will be good tomorrow, you need to tell them when you are going to eat it and they will hook him up.

glennlab replies on Jan 3, 2019:
@Tenacious That's northern Belize almost to the Mexican border at Chetuma,MX. I haven't been there, but it is very near the coastal swamps, There are some things that he needs to be prepared for, they take US currency almost everywhere at $2 BZ for $1 US. US cell phone programs will barely work if you can get a signal from MX, BZ government controls the local phone and telecom services so internet is very restricted when and where you can get it. Almost everyone speaks English. You are only 15 degrees from the equator, sunscreen is a must, It is the mosquito season, figure out how much mosquito repellent you'll need, then double it. A US drivers license is good there. If you have other questions or I can offer you more insight PM me.
