@Mike1947 Southern magnolias will live over 1000 years, live oaks and cypress are also in this life age group. This particular tree succumbed to disease at a very young age (50-60). The number of trees that actually reach the ancient age are rare.

@btroje apparently, just looked it up, there have been several 1000 yo magnolias. prized for their hard wood and tight grain. So unless something bad happens, mine should live another 3-500 years, I just hope to be around for it's 100th.

It was really planted too close to another tree, where the residents were planted in pine boxes, so that tree did well. Any new tree would need to be planted much farther way to thrive. (someone else's plots)

@creative51 This was a very young tree, it was planted in 55, cut down in 2010, average age for a magnolia is 300+ years before age related degeneration sets in. They are very slow growing, I have a 90 yo in my front yard and it is less than 24 in in diameter, 3-5 feet is fully mature.

@Hathacat I've had dragon fruit before, but it was rather bland, I've heard that the plant ripened fruit is more flavorful. The um I'm taking out is in a bad spot. So I'll go with 2 different cultivars of sweet plums, probably a black or sugar. My neighbor doesn't speak English, so a note would be worthless. I use it mainly as fragrance for my car on long trips with a little for cooking. It will be another 3-5 years before my pecan produces commercial quantities of nuts, but yeah, there is money to be made.

@Zoohome yes and no, when they trim trees in my area, I'll normally get one or 2 truckloads of green wood chips with all the greenery mixed in (that 2.5 to 5 tons). 15 years ago I had 25 tons spread in my front yard and another 30 tons in my back yard to build up the soil. I composted that in place. My compost pit is the old base to my son's tree house. (8X 8) In years when I can't get wood chips, I use landscaping pine bark mulch(should be about nickle to dime size pieces) that I place loosely around the plants about 3-4 inches deep. I have very alkaline soil so all my amendments are acidic. In the past I have used shredded newsprint, when I worked at the newspaper, I would bring the roll butts home and run them through the shredder. When hay is cheap, I've used hay and even gone to the feed store and cleaned up their spilled hay since it can't be used for animal feed anymore. Basically if it's organic and not poison, I use it.

Enjoyed take-out Pad Thai here the other evening, Aquatic Park, one of the older parks in Paradise.

@Hathacat I have a plum that I'm getting ready to take out and replace with another plum, a nectarine tree that has only produced 5-10 nectarines in 25 years, Dallas is not a good area for trees that bloom early and have a chilling requirement, Not to mention squirrels out the kazoo. I have just started 5 dragon fruit "trees", i have an all spice tree that will never produce, and a rosemary bush that I have to keep the neighbors from stealing (if they would ask, I would gladly cut as much as they want, but they send a kid over and he just breaks a large branch off and runs home with it) . And a loquat tree that should bloom this fall and produce fruit this winter. A black walnut (good for pig food, but I live in the city) and a pecan that looks like it will give a decent crop of nuts this year,

You really need at least 5 gallons of soil per plant, they can be tied to a trellis, it has no tendrils. It is a memeber of the belladonna family like tomatoes and potatoes. I use it at times as a place for the green tomato hook worm after I pluck them off my tomatoes. The moth larva will thrive on the leaves and the tomatoes appreciate the relief. I have had them pop up just about everywhere, but they are native to this area (Texas, desert SW).

It's made several national articles over the years, when I was growing up it was considered the largest living Christmas tree in the US. The park was improved during my grandfather's 4 terms as mayor, they had a large conservation group that understood the value of preserving and cashing in on natural beauty,

I will only get 4 this year, next year I will know if this tree is a keeper or not. My old trees died 3 years ago, the result of 2 years of drought and one winter of sever cold. You can see the pomegranates in one of the moonflower pictures.

@Sheannutt It was part of a federal grant for civic improvement that required the least amount of damage to living natural resources, plus you had the Army Corps with input. The town always had significant tourist income, so there was an add interest in preserving the things people come to see. Granted in the early 1900s thousands of 3-500 year old cypress were cleared from this lake shore.

That was never the climbing tree, it sat in the middle of main street, this was the climbing tree. That long branch going out to the left has been severely trimmed back it used to reach almost to the ground and extended out another 30 feet

The town used to decorate as the town Christmas tree. When they redid the park area, they used some of the information from NPS and built a raised deck work to keep people from trampling the roots. The city park was part of an ancient Oak Grove that they preserved.

@Zoohome none, I alternate layers of leaves/wood chips/pine bark mulch with a layer of organic wet. Once the blue flies mature (late August) I start adding a mixture of sugar water with dissolved yeast and a pinch of salt. The yeast will break down the sugars and starches to more usable foods for the bugs and microbes. I also have a lot of plants in pots, so at the end of the season, I add that dirt back to the pile. Its one of the few things I remember to water at least once a week when we don't have rain.

@Zoohome I compost most everything organic. When I was still doing taxes, all my shredded paperwork went into the compost, oil/grease from cooking, leftovers, freezer clean out, yard waste. I keep the yard waste on one side, then use it to cover the other waste. During the spring and summer when I add new material, it looks like the ground is alive. During the falland winter, it is much slower with just the earthworms and yeast.

Yes, it was. You can see how loaded it was with the flash, but the bushes are thick, so you can't see very deep into it.

They are super easy to grow, very drought tolerant, require next to no maintenance. If you'd like seed PM me. They have a super strong fragrance when they first open, around sundown, that very quickly disapates as the night goes on. As far north as you are they should be annuals, but you should be able to collect enough seeds to propagate another generation. All the plants in the pictures are first year growth.

The improved trees are susceptible to several soil borne diseases that the natives are not, the improved have large nuts, while the native has small hard to open and pick nuts. Since it can take 10 years...

@EdEarl My understanding is you can graft at pretty much any age, so if you have mature trees, grafting should give you good nuts in only a few years. Pretty much any of the Indian named cultivars (Cheyenne, Arapaho, Navajo, etc) will produce well with large meat, thin shelled pecans.

I have a couple of pecan trees in the yard, and decided to try air layering on three branches.

On figs, Air layering is a good propagation method, the rule with them is the larger the branch you can get to root, the quicker you will have viable fruit.

@EdEarl If you can find someone with a fig tree that has good figs, see if you can trim a branch, 2-4 feet, plant it in potting soil until roots develop, then transfer out doors. It is best to do this in spring when there are long green shoots coming out. You normally get a little fruit the first year, but don't allow it to develop, it takes too much of the strength first year. Second year, fair game.

@JenBeberstein When you have 450 lbs at one time, you find innovative ways to use it. It takes about 7 gallons of seeds for 5 gallons of wine. It is more like a rose' than anything else. I make it with a high alcohol (18-20%) content, so it is slightly dry and packs a punch.

This particular cultivar is about 85 % true from seed, so I figured the odds were in my favor. The old trees produced between 100-150 lbs of fruit a year. Can you say pomegranate wine?
