Making it mandatory would have been a huge disservice to students like me with poor hand eye coordination. While I did fine in statistics, people without a good understanding of higher math would be lost, as is evident in the number of people that cannot pass stat in college. The typewriters we had were manual, you are right about that. When I was in the Air Force electric typewriters were highly sought after and tightly controlled.
