Since I'm a declared sanctuary site, I don't use chemical poisons in my yard or garden, there are plenty of bugs, plus I see a munched out section of my dragon fruit about once a week.

I had a visitor early this morning, a Texas spiny lizard warming up on my steps.

Horny toad, or horned lizards are a different species, they have a crown of spines behind their head. Horned lizards are considered endangered in TX and OK, The spiny lizard is not considered threatened. Horny toads feed on native fire ants, spiny lizards are omnivores. When I first discovered the spiny lizard on my property, I did quite a bit of research to make sure that I wasn't doing anything to threaten their survival. It turned out that my landscaping practices were in line with what the lizards liked.

@Redheadedgammy Fish poop. water lilies are natures filters, I have way too many fish since I put up the bird spikes, so the raccoons don't tear up the plants and eat the fish. I have several in the 8-12 inch range right now, a few months ago I was replacing 100 a month.

@FrayedBear The depth is probably the most important thing for ice formation, then you have to keep the water circulating. A pond pump will keep the water aireated and keep the water moving.

It rarely stays below freezing long enough for that to be a problem. When we do get the odd freeze, I just pull the hose off the pump and direct it toward the surface, it creates an ice void so the fish get air.

Nostalgia, not always correct, but normally comforting.

Great!! I have a fish pond too, no fish right now, every couple of years a great blue heron cleans me out. Good chance to empty and clean it then buy a bunch of feeder goldfish who'll grow to 8 inches or so(circle of life and all). I border the woods, no fence, so I get lots of visitors.

I've had an osprey, a heron, raccoons, and cats get mine, I have pinks and feeders, The water lilies provide some cover This fall I'm going to have to trim my root balls as they are getting big.

I just bought a case of food and left it near the hot tub enclosure so that if he's out there, I can just feed him. He's gotten pretty friendly, but has a habit of a really loud hiss when he approaches. but will beg to get scratched and petted. Talk about mixed signals. He'll come about 4 feet into the house then runs like he's on fire.
