@Redheadedgammy We would get the daily intelligence briefings, plus all the news input. The Soviets were extremely interested in anything that would weaken us. Almost every time there was a new revelation, they would run penetration checks, testing our defenses. When Nixon finally did resign, we were on alert, Pres Ford had been fully briefed on his options in case of attack and we sweated until the Soviets stood down after President Ford had taken office.

glennlab replies on May 15, 2022:
@puff Having grown up in the oil patch (SW La and SE Tex) I know a lot about petrochemicals, drilling, refining and fracking. Chemical fracking was illegal in most states prior to the 1973 oil embargo, prior to that they used almost exclusively HE for completion. Slant drilling, now a common practice, was also illegal. We still vent criminal amounts of methane into atmosphere.
Probably not the right group for this but why can't we make oil companies produce more oil?

glennlab replies on May 15, 2022:
@puff crude oil is graded on a sliding scale that depends on a multitude of factors. Shale oil is not a single type of oil, you are probably referring to tar sands oil which contains a large amount of sand and pitch. Shale oil ranges from natural gas to pitch and everything in between. The vast amount that has been recovered thus far is methane, a very high quality feeder stock.

glennlab replies on May 15, 2022:
@NHjulie It would take an act of congress to take away their subsidies. The oil companies have been fighting government regulation since the 1880s and winning the long battle. We are looking at a few home grown companies and a multitude of foreign firms (Shell, BP, Pemex, Opec). A lowering of sanctions on Venezuelan oil would alleviate all the crude needs for the Americas as would removing the Iranian sanctions meet the needs of Europe. It would have the added benefit of removing the Russian oil demands from the market. One of the problems is that we are in the normal shut down cycle for most refineries to convert to summertime fuel mixes. The refineries' PR people are good, with over 140 years of bamboozeling the public and bribing congressmembers, state governments, and regulators in general.
Probably not the right group for this but why can't we make oil companies produce more oil?

Some usually die after flowering so enjoy it. The bloom might attract bats or moths at night, so get the infrared camera filter ready.
glennlab replies on May 12, 2022:
@Redheadedgammy It depends on particular type, how well it is cared for and general luck. I had one in my front yard that would bloom about every 3 years. Someone ran over it in the middle of the night and ended it.
Sometimes it's best to just stay silent.

@CourtJester from Goldwater, to Nixon, to Reagan to GHWB to shrub, they were all racist and traded on it for their entire career. The party of racist is the GOP period. Not one returned to the democratic party, you are just delusional denying your own racism.

@BDair I envy you, I was brought up in the midst of the KKK, I had/have relatives that were/are members. It is a sensitive topic when I find a sympathizer. I did not enjoy wearing a mask, but I did see the benefit. It protected me from spreading the virus if I had it to others, and if they were wearing it, it protected me from catching it from them. nearly every case of mask mandates were locally imposed by locally elected officials looking out for the local citizens. The exception being mass transit and interstate travel by aircraft and train.

@Alienbeing cell division in a species is not reproduction, you need to go back to biology class, you failed the definition of terms. reproduction involves the wholesale replication of the species not individual cells dividing.
