Insurrectionist get 51 months Idaho man sentenced to prison on felonies tied to Jan.
Garban comments on Mar 5, 2022:
Good news, but 51 months seems like a weak response to an attempted violent coup.

The sentence isn't nearly long enough for someone involved in the violent overthrow of our government, and who assaulted and brutalized police officers defending the Capital. I am no fan of sending people to prison, but I don't believe the crime is being considered nearly as serious as it should be.

@Tejas I never said it was a crime, so don't even go there, but I don't go to places where I need a gun to feel safe. . Why did you go down the rabbit hole of criminality, did you run out of relevant material. All I said is that there is no reason to have an exposed gun unless you are planning on using it. And, a long gun in a restricted environment is a stupid option As far as my opinion goes, it is highly relevant, since this is an opinion forum.

@Tejas I'd say you are wrong and won't admit it, something that is all too common with you. I have seen libertarians come to parties where they knew there would be liquor sporting their rifles and sidearms. and I never expect to see weapons openly displayed at what is supposed to be a peaceful rally. I have seen counter protesters open carry as an intimidation of the lawful protesters, You need to get out more if you haven't seen it. Open weapons should only be expected when you are planning on using them. I don't see any deer in Walmart, so there is no need for a long gun in a restricted space. If you feel the need to carry a long gun in public, get a penal implant instead .

@Tejas I was an observer at many of the rallies, you may be technically correct, but most of the protesters wanted open carry and really didn't care about the difference between open and constitutional. If you are aware of the protests then you should apologize for calling me a liar about the number of people I had seen with rifles. Calling something an exaggeration is calling it a lie.

@Tejas I have seen idiots with guns in plenty of public places in Dallas and the surrounding areas. Most are libertarian or republicans, I know because in many cases I know them personally. They are neither well regulated nor well trained in gun safety. I also know a lot of people that conceal and carry, they are afraid of leaving their guns in the car, so they carry them into the bar, (a felony in Texas by the way). So many of these law abiding citizens are in fact uncaught felons. Not so well regulated.

glennlab replies on Feb 28, 2022:
That is about as close to the actual definition as you could get. Tactical weapons are defined by their use, not their yield. The same b-61can be tactical delivered by a F-22 or strategic if delivered by a B-2 bomber. Russia has had in its inventory an array of tactical battlefield weapons that are highly mobile and can fire from as close as 25 miles from the advancing troops. They also posses an array of intermediate range missiles. Yields range from a low of 100 tons of TNT to 600 kilotons .

@puff No their primary planning prior to the attack on 9/11 was Russia. Iraq and Iran were an afterthought. GWB was still stuck in daddy's world since all of his underlings had worked for GHWB first. That was the reason it took so long to respond to the attack. When Afghanistan offered to turn over ODB to the world court or any other third party country, GWB turned them down since he needed a war. The "but he tried to kill my daddy" reason on Iraq didn't surface until after we had invaded. Based on military planning, a full force response could have been implemented in 30 days, not the 90 plus that GWB took.

@puff The rational for going to war in Afghanistan and Iraq were because GWB wanted to go to war, since a wartime president gets political capitol. His biography stated tthat before he got elected president. He got caught flat footed on 9/11 since he and his people were preparing for a war with Russia and not a terrorist attack as he had been warned to expect. As far as the end of the afganistan war, Trump had already signed the surrender agreement and had pulled out of all the airfields, so it was a matter of giving a face saving statement.

@puff There are 15 other reactor units under Ukraine control, Chernobyl was the least defended area, and thus easy to penetrate. The entire exclusion area is dangerous for humans to be in for any length of time. Based on prevailing winds, it would not be a good terrorist site. The domed reactor provides some shelter from shelling and rocket attacks, since no one wants to release what is being stored there. Maximum time in zone will depend on the particular area the troops are stationed. I would worry if they stayed in the exclusion zone for more than 7-10 days as irreversible radiation poisoning could decimate the troops. Penning the Russian troops in the exclusion zone could be a very bad thing for the Russians.

glennlab replies on Feb 25, 2022:
@puff Playing "what about isms"does nothing to address the current problem. I was a war planner during the cold war, I am keenly aware of the bullshit that was in many of the treaties and what was not. The treaties that were ended, while I disagreed with ending them were widely violated by the Russians, Not putting something into writing before a treaty is signed means that it was never in the treaty or intended to be in the treaty. There is a huge difference between proposing something and actually having it agreed to. Russia promised in writing to guarantee the borders of Ukraine in exchange for the nuclear weapons that Ukraine possessed. Russia signed the UN charter, when recognizes the sovereign borders and uninvited military intervention without the consent of the security council or the general assembly. No one here has clean hands, so the only measure we can evaluate is whether the current invasion is either legal or justified. There is no moral high ground, all countries are down in the mud, the only real question is whether we will try to slog out of the mud together or get down in it and fight over the dirty boots. To be clear, the red scare was the 1950s and was a way to justify the building of the nuclear umbrella. The domino theory was exactly that a theory that helped to justify the Vietnam war in the late 60 early 70s, I did not buy into either one, though I would have been a little young to remember the commie under every bed's beginning. My history with the USSR/Russia goes back way beyond the last 20 years, with the Russian people you need to go back to the Czars and take everything into account. Russian history is something that everyone should be aware of to evaluate their actions. If you have a problem with your own governments actions, speak out to them about it. If you think your government is racist, speak out about it.

@puff The "push" to join NATO was a false flag, it takes a unanimous vote by all NATO members to admit another country, also no country already at war can join NATO. So Ukraine was ineligible to even apply. You fell for Russian propaganda. NATO has been on its borders for years, another false flag.
Impressive cartoon.

glennlab replies on Feb 21, 2022:
Philosophy teaches you to question not just the physical world, but the way that world fits together, it is a small mind that dismisses its value from the article: As long as scientists continue to treat philosophy as if it were a branch of the natural sciences, there will be proclamations of its death and demise. Yet, fundamental questions will continue to be thrown up as the limits of human knowledge expand, and these very unscientific questions will be answered by philosophers. So I’m not worried. Philosophy is as alive as it ever was and the inclination to ask fundamental questions, in any field, is as infectious as ever. That’s why philosophy is a virus.

The "is" question occurred before the perjury, Clinton was impeached for perjury not relating to anything he did in office and since the judge( a republican) dismissed the case in a summary judgement, saying that even if everything that had been alleged in the suit was true, the plaintiff had no case. She should have never even allowed the depositions to go forward. These things are in no way equal.

@azzow2 You just need to leave it uncovered long enough to get fly eggs laid. NaOH will also kill a lot of your other composting creatures. Once you get a good base of larva, you don't need to leave it uncovered. Most of the flies we have in the US will stay in a larval stage as long as there is sufficient food. They'll remain active until the cold sets in then go to pupae stage, come spring, they will hatch and start the process over.
