The 2nd amendment was added to ensure that the slave patrols, the militia as defined in 1789. Each plantation was required to provide members from their family (or paid for by the plantation owner) to round up runaway slaves. Virginia required that this amendment be placed in the Bill of rights to ensure that the northern non slave states could not eliminate rights of slave holders by restricting their ability to cross state lines with their weapons. This was indeed a collective right held by the minority to suppress the majority. It had nothing to do with hunting, (providing for your food in 1789), overthrow of an oppressive government or any of the BS reasons people have come up with.
