Flowers are beautiful. Those curly horned sheep are amazing. It is weird though that they don't show on my page on my phone but when I scroll through they show up
glennlab replies on Jul 16, 2019:
They were in an added message, they were the first ones I've seen that I had my camera, first ones were crossing a road in Yellowstone1976, second one was through a rifle scope,1977 (no shot worth taking), and finally at mohave Lake on the AZ side 2019. The second little blue flower is also an added message.
I hope people pay attention!

They do this every ten years, they target areas where they hope to dissuade some people from answering the real census and build up a gullible list for prospecting.
glennlab replies on Jul 16, 2019:
@Hathacat The census trap is one they only roll out ervery 10 years, they are under federal courrt orders to cease and desist on several of their other mail tricks including caging where they would send out certified mail in democratic leaning areas then challenge the right to vote of anyone not signing for the mail, using that refusal as proof that they were not legal residents of the precint that they were attempting to vote in.

@Hathacat I have heard it best described as a thornless cactus, I'm not really sure, I know it is only native to a desert area around El Paso.

If it is a melon, , squash or gourd, the female flowers will come later than the first male flowers. You should be able to tell once the females come out.
glennlab replies on Jul 5, 2019:
@DotLewis Something to watch out for with slow growing members of the squash/gourd family is what is called blossom end rot. This is a softening of the fruit near the blossom, as the fruit starts to mature, there is nothing you can do to reverse it, so pick it and use it. It's still good, but if left on the vine it will rot and you will get nothing but it will tax your mother plant since she is trying to feed it.
Mystery vine.

glennlab replies on Jul 5, 2019:
@DotLewis As long as pollen will still stick to female parts, it hasn't been fully fertilized yet. You should have male flowers at least 2:1 on the plant so it won't reduce the number for natural pollenation. If the squash starts to wither (it happens more than anyone like to admit) remove it from the vine that will force the plant to put out more fruit to replace it. In small gardens, it's fine to over manage. Keep me posted.

@DotLewis I give people loofa seeds and have to explain that it can be as much as a month from the time that the first male flowers show up and fall off before they finally get a fruit. @MsDemeanour As the second oldest continuous gov't(Britian is oldest) and oldest constitutional government (written) it is easier to teach history since we only have to coverup a few major failings. Few ASmericans can tell you anything about the Articles of Confederation (the orginal contitution) or much except the fairy tales of the revolution. We still view or history through rose colored glasses, so we like most of the rest of the world will be condemned to repeat it until we finally learn our lessons. I'm a history buff and a science nerd, so I really don't fit neatly into boxes. and when you think of the averege intellegence, half the people are dumber than that.

It is a safety issue, You have a mix of people that for many reasons may not be in the best frame of mind, following closely who may have little to no idea of where they are going, It goes back to days when many times those driving were inexperienced drivers.
glennlab replies on Jul 2, 2019:
@larsatrg I was taking no position, i was expaining the history of why. It is not for respect to the dead or the living, it was for public safety at a time when roads were much more unsafe than they are now. When I took driver's ed in 1970, it was a law that all traffic in both directions would pull to the right and allow the prosession to travel unimpeded. When that law was written most roads were 2 lane with no paved shoulder.

glennlab comments on Jun 30, 2019:
These snails have been a problem for decades at many southern ports of entry. They are a food item in the ethnic communities and are considered more lucrative than drugs, since smugglers seldom get punished.
glennlab replies on Jun 30, 2019:
@MojoDave They bring them in and raise them in captivity, the problem arises when some of the escape or when eggs are discarded in cleaning the ccages. I was in Houston when they seized a "farm" , they had been raising them on trash from supermarkets and had a thriving business. They sold them live, so they buyers would try to grow their own to save money.

How are the Mosquitos there?
glennlab replies on Jun 30, 2019:
In the mountains, they are not bad, on the island (San Pedro) they are OK unless you get into the jungle, then it's transfusion time. I was there during the rainy (mosquito) season, and was really surprised at they weren't worse. There is a constant breeze off the ocean that keeps them down.

@MikeInBatonRouge They will sprout fine from mid august on, the fall rains will speed up their growth and they should grow all winter. The mid september cold front we normally get will slow germanation if you wait that long.

@Leafhead I have some very large chinese photinaias that I broadcast fennel under every other year, this august is my planting time for them. I am in a very weird part of Texas, the Austin Escarpment, shallow poor soil, very intense summer heat and unpredictable rain, so many plants I'd like to put in are doomed.

glennlab comments on Jun 29, 2019:
It can be very irritating, The first thing i want to do when I get home is wash the road off of me. Next see if there is anything to eat, then just veg for a little while , then catch up on all the things that still need to be done around the house.
glennlab replies on Jun 29, 2019:
@gigihein My problem is that I maintain a very flexible schedule, if I see something that I want to take a look at, I may stop, I may not. Depending on how I feel, my drive day may end at noon or 7am , or anytime in between. I travel 20-25,000 miles a year, much of it by car. My last trip to las Vegas the flight was 12 hours, finally getting in Vegas at 1 AM their time or 3 back home. I'm not going to call anyone at 3am to tell them I'm OK, if I call you at 3am, it will be bad news.
