@Remiforce . Top pay at Medicare is less than $400,000 per year, top pay at United health is $100 million. @MsDemeanour It was common in every US war for the children of the wealthy and politically connected to recieve preferencial treatment by their draft boads, doctors, ministers, colleges or jobs. Trump gort a doctor to lie for him. the abuses of the system were so agregious that Nixon finally ended all deferments, beginning in 1973, as well as requiring that a military doctor had to grant the medical classification, no longer allowing cheaters to simply hire their way out of the draft. A lottery system was also implemented earlier so that all persons classified as 1-A were pooled nationwide and individual draft boards no longer could grant favorite son deferments.

We have seen more lizards around our yard in recent years. We have little geckos and a larger variety that may be 6 or 7 inches including their long tails. Your passion flowers are beautiful. I tried growing tbem, but I think my soil is too hard in the summer.
glennlab replies on Oct 15, 2019:
They are native to this area, so the first year is about the only time you have to really take care of them after that it is normally Katie bar the door. I'm on the escarpment in Oak Cliff, so I probably have worse soil than you.

@Redheadedgammy It looks like an Indian summer is on it's way next week, so they should be fine. I have planted a bunch of fennel for the swallowtails next spring, I planted a pound of seeds and right now i have a ton of tiny fennel plants all over my year right now.
Good morning all! Okay.

I've been working on getting my fish pond back up and running, in between trips.
glennlab replies on Oct 14, 2019:
@SukiSue This one is only 1600 gallons, so it is up an semi running. I've got a nice fuzz of algae growing on the sides already, I still haven't installed a filter/gardening system, but I've got a recirculation pump running. I just added goldfish (second round) right before the first front, so they are hunkering down and not eating . I'll be heading out this week to search for lotus bulbs for plant life and adding watercress once I set up the filter system.

I've seen 800 yo cypress, and these don't look too much different, but I'm glad they were identified and protected. They may be worth a trip east, I've seen the west coast giants and they are all impressive.`

You are going to find that the challenges are quite different in your new digs. You've moved from sub tropical to semi arid.

@Gmak My favorite have been the bristlecone pines, anytime the hike starts above 11,000 feet, you really appreciate the journey. I've been to three of the groves and have weird stories about each.

My eyes are always bigger than my garden and I kill many more than I save. If everything goes perfectly, you are either a magnificent gardener or never take chances. Sometimes it is a more merciful thing not to plant. lol
glennlab replies on Oct 13, 2019:
@itsmedammit I have an area under my magnolia tree that I planted lariapee under its about 20 x 20, low maintenance, but trees grow up between the clumps. My backyard is a backyard nature habitat, so I don't "have" to mow it all summer but I need to keep the wild carrots down. I have passion vine along the side fence and around the house, so I disappear into the vines in the summer. So much of my vegatable gardening is done in pots because of the poor soil, even after dumping tons (25-40) of mulch to build up the soil.
I have a confession.

@itsmedammit I know the feeling, i have to shop for pond plants while avoiding the rest of the greenhouse. I have a fruit tree that i am babying right now for spring fruit and a fig that I just planted this spring that I worry about. I got my fish pond put back in , so I'm trying to go low maintenance on it. For the last 30 years I have been trying to get to where I had less yardwork to do, now I just don't it.

glennlab replies on Oct 13, 2019:
Tableing allows a person to vote against an item without actually having to go on record as having voted against it. Items that have been tabled and not brought out die at the end of the session and must be reintroduced as a new motion, with no legislative history. It also allows you to avoid continued debate which might be more divisive.
