The Lovely Comments Republican Atheists Receives from Left Leaning Atheists - YouTube
godef comments on Mar 8, 2018:
OK, so when you think about extremist conservatism, what is one of the first things you think of? Religion. They go so hand-in-hand with one another that I have become to think of modern conservatism as a religion, to the extent that they are so willing to believe off-the-wall stuff that conflicts with reality to hold up their political ideals. I may stand corrected, but I wonder if very many conservative atheists went through any sort of catharsis when they became atheists, as opposed to just having been raised in an environment where religion was simply not pushed on them? Though I didn't realize it at them time, being raised in a conservative family and considering myself conservative in my early years, I became atheist because of my truly liberal sense of being, which I would describe as intellectualism - the ability to think and consider possibilities outside the box and look past the dogma, and I later turned liberal for the same reason. So in my mind, theist : conservative as atheist : liberal. Of course, there are always outlayers, conveyed by the apparent fact that only a small minority of those here who are conservative - it is my hope that they just have yet to complete the journey.

Are you talking about "truths" or "universal principals". Don't doubt it has a lot of the latter mixed in with the crazy stuff, but the bible isn't the only source of universal prinicipals, and you hear so much of the crazy stuff all the time to understand that it's probably not the best source.

What would be the most memorable travel adventure you have experienced?
godef comments on Mar 3, 2018:
OK, so imagine projecting yourself 10 years in the future and finding yourself travelling in a Russian taxi cab on the beltway around Moscow at 4 in the morning... before knowing you would be hitched to a Russian women who you met while she was visiting her childhood figure skating coach in Massachusetts. And then bringing her grown son to come attend college, only to see him strucken with a brain tumour whic he would not survive, which would lead her devastated and eventually wanting to adopt a Russian child. When I think back on it all, it was quite a journey. We're no longer together unfortunately, another story I'd rather not get into.

PTSD, roadblock to relationships. How many of us deal with this issue in our lives?
godef comments on Mar 2, 2018:
It may be in some cases people don't even know what they're suffering from. Sure, it may be more evident to someone who has been through battle, which is the biggest PTSD stereotype we've heard about. But by it's very nature, the root cause of PTSD is often buried deep in the psyche of those affected, and only manifests itself as strange reactions to mundane events. My adopted son was physically abused as a child before we adopted him when he just turned seven; on occasions when I'd get upset with with him over something minor, he would often run off and I'd find him hiding behind his bedroom door... I can't begin to imagine the terror he experienced as an adolescent.
Review of More Than 130 Studies Provides Powerful Evidence That Gun Control Saves Lives
godef comments on Mar 2, 2018:
It's common sense, isn't it. Yet, like a religion, people (gun nuts) want to believe the opposite. Their religion is guns. Agruing to them for gun control is like arguing an evangelical about the existence of god.
Atheism as per the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy [plato.stanford.edu]
godef comments on Mar 2, 2018:

As of now I'm Agnostic. Wondering if I should fully convert to Atheism. Thoughts?
godef comments on Mar 1, 2018:
I'd say don't "convert" to atheism for the sake of it. It you come to truly believe there is no supernatural beings that guide us, then in fact you are automatically an atheist. Otherwise, you just make it sound like another form of religion, which it is not.

When we finally start living in the moon or mars when will those people be classed as another ...
godef comments on Feb 27, 2018:
We don't necessarily need to move to the moon or Mars to eventually become a distinct species from what we are now. Consider that our ancestors weren't always homo sapiens but evolved from something before that. In any case, moving off the Earth does not automatically make us a different species, just a resident of a different place.

Possible New Black Hole Model... [livescience.com]
godef comments on Feb 27, 2018:
Well, one thing I think they got wrong in the article: black holes are not infinitely tiny, they actually do have width, otherwise what's the difference between a black hole and a super massive black hole? (I initially dropped the L in that last question and almost choked when I read it back). OK, I guess the mass could vary in an infinite spot. In any case, I see a lot of parallels to religion in this article: no one wants to think we would be merely crushed to near nothingness by the tremendous gravitational force of a black hole, there must be something afterwards to look forward to. Likewise, with religion, there must be something after death to look forward to... So I guess that makes me a cosmic censorshipiest.

Toilet seat etiquette.
godef comments on Feb 27, 2018:
The seat ought to be down, regardless of a adult female in the house, it just looks more aesthetic. The toilet paper depends on whether there are cats in the house or not;. Whereas I prefer mine over the top, so do the cats, and they will unroll it all on the floor; setting it under will prevent this. No rules, just be adults about it. Edit: OK, I guess that is a rule. But it applies to everything.

How to battle the proliferation of political correctness?
godef comments on Feb 19, 2018:
And unfortunately, it tends to be those on the liberal side that are the worse about this, as Bill Maher likes to point out. Author John Grisham once made a statement in an interview that in essence said a casual viewer of child pornography is not bad as a person who creates that pornography, which to me is obvious; while they both need to be reckoned with, these are not equal crimes. But he got a lot of hate and grief for that.
