Can coincidence be explained scientifically?
godef comments on Feb 8, 2018:
By it's definition, no. You run into thousands of people from all walks of like all the time and never think twice about it, but wow, what a coincidence to run into someone you do know! My ex would tell me about looking at the odometer and seeing a number like 777777 or 234567 and think that it's a cosmic message being sent to her; I tell her that she probably unconsciously looks at the odometer all the time with nary a thought about it, except for the occasion that the numbers happen to line up in some memorable way that appears beyond coincidental, But that's all it is... a coincidence.
A bit of a thought experiment.
godef comments on Feb 7, 2018:
It's a bit more complicated than that; if these two "universes" could see each other, then by definition, they would exist in and be part of the same universe. If multiple universes do exist, we cannot be aware of them through any conventional scientific observance. The possibility has been shown mathematically, but is only theory at this time.

godef comments on Jan 9, 2018:
We used to be able to go into Canada without a passport; don't think that's the case anymore. But with so many relatively small countries in close proximity over there, I can see it would be impractical not to have one. Do EU citizens need passports to go to other EU countries? Russians need a passport just to travel within their own country. Me? I had one but it went through the wash a few years ago.
Are you an atheist, but believe in aliens (as in extraterrestrials)?
godef comments on Jan 9, 2018:
I don't "believe" in any particular aliens, I'm just of the opinion that, in the whole wide universe, odds are there are likely others around somewhere. The difference with this and religion is that, unlike god, there is a precedent to extraterrestrial life; us. If we exist, than others could also; and we would be as extraterrestrial to them as they are to us

Robots
godef comments on Jan 8, 2018:
Robots themselves are innocent. Their masters are another story. In theory, robots would eliminate the monotony and redundancy of repetitive tasks; e.g. the supermarket typing in the cost off an item's price tag with bar code readers. Everything would be come more efficient, the shop owner would save money, everyone would be able to work less hours to produce the same results with less effort. Fewer hours, same efficiency, same pay. Unfortunately, the store owner gets greedy, wants everybody to work as hard as they usually do. The efficiency becomes his additional profit. I don't "build robots", but I do write software that reduces the drudgery of repetitive work. Yes, this does eliminate it, but who reaps the profit? Those who did drudge work now no longer have a job at all. Meanwhile, the CEO pays himself millions...
