The more stressed a species is, the faster they are forced to evolve to adapt (unless it's too quick like the asteroids that wiped out whole species). So yeah, I certainly would expect that the pace of evolution varies.

godef comments on Jan 2, 2018:
I had a letter appear in the Boston Globe, maybe 20-25 years ago when a series of abortion clinics were bombed or were being heavily protested by pro-lifers. I recall my letter was in protest of a pro-life leader who I felt was responsible for inciting the violence. Had another letter in a Rochester NY paper perhaps another 10 years before that which is more vague in my mind but had to do with secular humanism; at that time, the Rochester School Board was being infested by the religious right.

I realized that I was an atheist when I first started learning about mythology, did anyone else have...
godef comments on Dec 29, 2017:
You could be Einstein if you are good with math, because it takes the same out-of-the-box thinking that you do to become one. You might be considered a genius, but instead you are "fringed" by being an atheist. You could say mythology influenced my being atheist but in a different way; when I was a kid, though I wasn't particularly religious like you, I loved the album Jesus Christ Superstar, much like a kid might like Star Wars now, would sing it every day in the shower (I was a really clean kid then). If you're familiar with JC Superstar, you would know it to be a more humanistic telling of JC's end days, and I think that helped lead me away from the dogmatic, perfect-JC-never-sinned of main stream religions.
Which one is atheist?
godef comments on Dec 29, 2017:
I think the key is "I don't believe" which underscores the notion that atheism is not a belief, but rather the lack of belief.

Why did you choose your username/avatar?
godef comments on Dec 27, 2017:
The avatar is me. My username is the word "go" and my initials, created a long time ago when I needed a username in a pinch. Used to have fun with it on chat sites when some people shortened it to "god"; one time I was explaining how exhausted I was building Rome all day and still hadn't finished the job.
Does every human have a 'right to life'?
godef comments on Dec 26, 2017:
That's a tough one; essentially, this notion defines "morality", treat others like they would like you to treat them. We also live in a natural world, where it is in our genes to do what we can for our species to survive, or more specifically, to push each our own particular gene pool. In prehistoric times, this meant head-to-head competition for resources, survival of the fittest. But as our species gained in intelligence, it started to become apparent that cooperation had started to become the best guarantee to survival as a species. Certain folks would take up the prerogative and turn this into a code of conduct to guide and enforce this; as with anything, it was sometimes with the best of intentions, sometimes less than that; a more selfish variety that emphasized their own survival.. So from a strictly atheist point of view, a "right to life" is an irrelevant notion. What we really has is a need to survive, but once we understand that cooperation is a desirable method of survival, we create a morality (which the religious try to high-jack and call their own) which is really a guide to promote that.
Are atheists and agnostics intolerant?
godef comments on Dec 26, 2017:
As Americans, we have the civil right to believe what we want, and if we consider ourselves patriots (a highly misused word by those on the right), we should step up further and defend that right. But the right to believe does not translate to the right to impose your beliefs on others that don't share it, because you would then be violating their civil rights. Listen to whatever music you want, just don't blast the neighborhood with it. Don't know if I speak for everyone here, but I don't believe in denying others if they want to believe in god, but I would work to stop them from creating law and policy based on that belief that infringes on mine.

Age & Romance: How Low (or High) will you go?
godef comments on Dec 24, 2017:
The older you are, naturally, the more likely you are to suggest that age isn't a factor. The truth is, we are all attracted to the vitality of someone who is younger than us, and hope we can attract them to like us. If we are rich, we can attract to us those whose are very much younger than us with the promises of richness and an easy life (I.E. the trophy wife). But in the end, it all comes down to the song by the band The The: Jealous of Youth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cG9afkQ_Uc).

Extraterrestrial religion....
godef comments on Dec 23, 2017:
If we're talking about the imminent future, than I would presume that they were the more advanced civilization that has managed to come the great distances to visit us, and part of being more advanced would be their having "grown up" and shed their religions. Any manipulation on their part would be to take advantage of humanity's dependence in religion in some way, presuming they are less than friendly. Anyone ever watch Babylon 5?
