For believers, fear of atheists is fueled by fear of death
godef comments on Aug 29, 2018:
I don't buy it. Even the most religious are afraid of death because bottom line they just aren't completely sure about their beliefs. I think they just hate the thought of how many what-could-have-been restful Sunday mornings they wasted if they figure out God really doesn't exist.

I've been with my current partner for nearly 6 years.
godef comments on Aug 27, 2018:
Depends on how long you've been together. Six years is a pretty strong investment. OTOH, if you had just met him last week, then CYA. Certainly no one suddenly loses "communication skills" or ability to listen. Somthing has caused a road block that has brought out this characteristic in him that's always been there, but was not relevant to yr relationship. If you hope to save yr relationship, you need to figure out what that is, and more importantly, need to make him understand it.

Do you think that information can be destroyed, or do you think that it is a permanent component of ...
godef comments on Aug 21, 2018:
"Information" is such a nebulous term, I can't make sense of your question. In some cases, information is perception; different people might literally see a color differently due to their brain's interpretation of information, but as long as they agree it's red, this information remains persistent. Additionally, how do you define "information being destroyed"? Do you mean wiping a disk drive? A person dying and thus info in the brain going away? The rings of a tree destroyed by fire? The same or similar information can often be redundantly stored in multiple ways; the information that is lost by a witness of an event who dies may still be retained by another witness of the same event, or perhaps a TV news camera. And if there is nothing to record an event, does that mean the event didn't happen? Is it possible for information not to be recorded in some fashion?

You say you feel this doesn't have much to do with capitalism, but then point out people are put off by representatives who are rich and getting richer. This is exactly what happens with capitalism; where as a robust economy does need good incentivism, it often fails because most people, by their nature, are just too greedy and want more than their fair share of the pie.

What do you do on Sundays?
godef comments on Aug 19, 2018:
When I'm not otherwise on a trip, Sunday mornings are my classical music times. I turn on Music Choice and change from my usual Indie channel to classical, and sip on my Sunday Morning Ice Coffee, which has blueberry, a shot of espresso (coffee brandy), and cream (Irish Cream). I sit back and get all classified up. Hmm, is there such a thing as blueberry brandy?

You ought to be able to get Netflix and Amazon Prime through your Smart TV. For cable channels like MSNBC and CNN: not sure if they are available online; my Smart TV has an internet browser, and that might be option if yours does, albeit it might be a bit clunky. Otherwise, you would need a streaming service like Hulu, or how about DirecTV Now since you're already familiar with DirecTV. For broadcast TV, presuming you live a reasonable distance from them, get a HD antenna; I recently got one but it turns out I don't need it. It cost me $28.90 + shipping and has an 80 mile range; I'd ship it to you unused for 28.90 and I'd pay for shipping. If you're into local sports, more and more major league teams are being covered by cable channels; DirecTV Now would be the best bet to have these, but other streaming services might be more iffy about local cable channels. I recently had all the same questions as you; I was getting lousy service from FiOS and paying way too much. I actually decided on DirecTV (with the dish) because I was also interested in getting the Music Choice channels which DirecTV Now doesn't appear to include. It's cheap as a new customer, and if that price creeps up in a few years, I'd re-explore my options again.
