My late lab-shepherd loved string beans. Every year when I would pick the beans in my garden she would sit outside the fence and bark until I gave her a bean. She got about 1/10 of what I picked. That is how it is with my SO when he eats a banana. He would end up eating only a third of the banana. I think my dogs will eat pretty much anything but one of them is allergic to many foods including carrots. If one can’t get something, nobody else gets one either.

graceylou replies on May 30, 2018:
@EdEarl It's not about the name, it's about what you do, right? We all start somewhere. I asked the question because I think lately people are becoming more aware of the health benefits of eating a "vegan diet" if done in a certain way and more and more people are becoming "vegan" for this reason. There is a bit of backlash I think from people who have been vegan for years. Most people don't care if you want to call yourself vegan or plant-based or whatever else, as long as you're doing something in the right direction. Some people would tell you you can't call yourself vegan, only plant-based if it's only about your diet. Honestly, we don't want to push away people who are making a start into the lifestyle. And I'm not the creator of this group so I have no say in whether people stay or leave or what they can or cannot say. I for one am glad you are here. I think I'm just going to go back and just post recipes.
Feeling unsupported.

graceylou replies on May 30, 2018:
@EdEarl To me, it looks like this group has members with various interpretations of veganism. It’s not even a strictly vegan group; it’s also a vegetarian group. There are those who think only their interpretation matters and should override others’. They have the right to interpret it their way yes, but you have the right to interpret it your way. We all have the final effect of reducing consumption and use of animals whatever our reasons. I hate the attitude of “I’m more vegan than you”. Whatever we do makes a difference. None of us is a perfect vegan. There’s no such thing. We just try to do what we can. If you decide to leave then your voice will not be heard. Anyhow, it seems to me that people who became vegan for dietary reasons end up learning more about the meat and dairy industries and start to make changes in other aspects of their lives. So it’s looks like a gateway to a more multi-faceted veganism. That was really what I was curious about.

graceylou replies on May 29, 2018:
@BettyColeman Did I ever say that? I’m saying that I’ve met some vegans who would not follow those terminologies as defined by Wikipedia. That said, Wikipedia is just as reliable as any random things you find on the internet. Many entries are lacking cited sources and some are behind in being up to date. It’s nowhere near a peer reviewed scientific journal. May be you should read exactly what I say rather than react to what you think I could possibly have said. I understand people have different interpretations of what veganism means to them. They don’t need Wikipedia to define it for them. The decision to become a vegan is very personal. I want to keep this discussion non-confrontational and everyone’s comment about the topic is valid.

I’m aware of that. Some in the vegan community would not agree with those classifications just because they show up on Wikipedia. But then again I don’t have the “i’m more vegan than you” attitude so whatever works for someone that ends up saving animals and the planet in some way I’m all for it. However, I’ve seen vegans argue that those who are only “vegan” dietarily are plant based and not vegan at all.

graceylou replies on May 29, 2018:
That would be how I would classify them as well, but I've heard "I'm vegan for my health" pretty often these days. I've also come across the term "dietary vegan". There seems to be a trend (probably due to the most recent documentaries that relate to health) towards more people becoming "vegan" or considering themselves as so. There's the idea out there that vegan foods must be healthy foods, when in fact there are many unhealthy vegan foods out there. I turned to veganism for ethical/compassionate reasons and only recently decided to choose healthier options. However, if people decide to reduce or eliminate their consumption of animal products, I really don't care what they call themselves.

Basically, I didn't want to have a colony of ferals on my property. Female cats started coming to our property when we brought in the horses and the hay and oats that came with them because rodents started coming in for the feed and they have enough prey to feed their kittens. Male cats usually just pass through. So, we wanted to have any ferals on our property spayed/neutered at the very least.

I don’t own any firearms either although I’ve been threatening to buy myself a pink Hello Kitty rifle. Many around me are trigger happy with their rifles and shotguns. They seem to think it’s needed for protection out here in rural country (and for hunting and target practice). I’ve lived here now almost 8 years, pretty isolated. All I need are my dogs and my donkey for safety from people and wildlife. I love the quiet and space I have here. I only have to deal with townfolks now and again when I get into town and at work (I work with animals so I see few people). Anyhow, I don’t want to blend in. That’s just not my nature.
So, I spent about 3 hours in my local smallish rural town for their community wide garage sale.

I never say anything negative to them and luckily these people are only quietly religious. No bible thumping and such. I feel may be more surrounded than confronted. Luckily I don’t live in town but in my own section of the county. People here don’t ask you if you go to church but they ask which church you go to. I just don’t answer.
