While I'm an advocate of gun-control, gun laws don't stop gun crimes. The most recent school shooting was carried out with a legally obtained shotgun and revolver, which were taken from his father. We don't have a gun law issue, we have a mental health issue.

Deanervin comments on May 19, 2018:
Why is shall not be infringed so difficult to understand? People don't always care for words they hear but no one calls for sensible speech laws. I get it is different because people die, but to focus on the object instead of the one using it is a departure from reason.
indirect76 replies on May 19, 2018:
There are sensible speech laws. It’s illegal to yell fire in a theater. It’s illegal To lie under oath or for the pupose of swindling someone. It’s illegal to threaten someone. All these things show that the first amendment is not absolute. So it follows that the second amendment is also not absolute. There is a line, as I’m sure you agree, people should not own nuclear weapons. Where that line is, that’s what the discussion is about. Don’t get me wrong, I’m on your side of this. I’m a gun owner and I’d like to keep them, but I think it’s disingenuous to quote the a portion of the second amendment and call it a day when the issue is far more complicated than that.

I'm so glad there was no internet or social media when I was growing up. I mean, REALLY glad.
indirect76 comments on May 4, 2018:
I would have benefited so unimaginably much had the internet existed when I was younger. It’s an unprecedented tool for education and I’m stunned anyone would say they are glad it was not available.
indirect76 replies on May 4, 2018:
@KKGator I had the same tools as well. I also was brought up in a state that is not known for it’s education. I did fine. I wouldn’t expect that to stun anyone. Though, saying that I’m glad that I had less tools might.

Does environment affect DNA? How does that work? What mechanism would be in play here?Would all of my DNA change in lockstep, or would just parts or individual strands change. How would DNA tests be so reliable if such things happened?
indirect76 replies on May 4, 2018:
@VLove Yes, of course, over generations. That is undeniable. I take exception to the idea that it can occur inside a single lifetime, again, as I interpreted the original post.

indirect76 comments on May 2, 2018:
Not at all an oxymoron or contradiction. Can one not study theology & biology at the same time? If not then I guess one can not study math and literature at the same time.
indirect76 replies on May 4, 2018:
@atheist I don’t think theology is necessarily a faith hypothesis. The subject operates in separate realm than science, much like art or philosophy.

indirect76 replies on May 4, 2018:
@VLove They are the same thing in a very broad context, but that’s not the same context that I interpreted the original post. They even clarify with “helps to make us who we are”. I don’t think they were talking about cancer or mutations. In any case, I don’t agree that environment affects DNA, and that change affects an individual in the way the original post describes.

@VLove I’m no genetic expert. This idea of environment affecting DNA in any way other than mutation or cancer goes against what I was taught ages ago in high school. If this information is wrong, I’d genuinely like to know about it.

@VLove My questions were in the context of the original post. I doubt cancer is what the post was talking about. No doubt the environment can cause a change in DNA manifesting as cancer.

How to Talk With Evangelicals About Evolution

I've always thought why wouldn't thirteen point seven billion years of evolution be a tribute to god, assuming he does exist. However, the vast distances today's telescopes can see also proves a tremendous length of time, far before the story of creation as per the bible.

I assume you mean AR-15 styled weapons when you say ‘assault weapons’. If so, I believe that you should need a license to own one. They aren’t well suited for hunting or home defense. They are well suited fighting a tyrannical government
indirect76 replies on Apr 26, 2018:
@dare2dream License assault rifles for fighting a tyrannical government. I’ll just concede your point that they are no match. I don’t see how that is an argument to ban them. To me it supports the idea of allowing more deadly weapons like the M16 or AK-47.

Reincarnation or DNA Memory?
bigpawbullets comments on Apr 25, 2018:
Interesting question. Humans apparently do have some form of genetic memory... a fear of snakes, and/or spiders is apparently, part of our collective memory. So, why not other memories of a more specific nature?
indirect76 replies on Apr 25, 2018:
These are evolved traits, not really memories. Cats have agoraphobic (fear of open spaces) tendencies not because an ancient cat saw a bird kill another cat. It’s because one cat happened to be agoraphobic, not get killed by large birds, and pass her genes on.
