Is anyone going to see the new Wes Anderson film?
indirect76 comments on Apr 6, 2018:
It’s on the docket for this weekend. Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directors and I’ve enjoyed every film he’s made.
How would you handle this?
indirect76 comments on Apr 6, 2018:
These kinds of things really don’t bother me. Do I like it? No, but I choose my battles.
What is the least selfish thing you have ever done?
indirect76 comments on Apr 6, 2018:
I would tell you, but for me part of not being selfish is keeping it to myself.
Agnostic vs Atheist
indirect76 comments on Apr 6, 2018:
If find that most people use ‘agnostic’ differently than it’s dictionary definition, which is fine. It’s mostly used to describe a person who is undecided as opposed to a person who does not know, or have knowledge of a god’s existence . These may seem to be the same thing, but they are not.
Being compassionate and being played for a fool. Safeguards?

It’s tough. Machiavelli wrote about this a lot. A person that is willing to do evil has more tools at their disposal to achieve their goals. While the good are at a disadvantage.

Anyone ever really think about what the Founding Fathers of the United States wanted for this ...
indirect76 comments on Apr 6, 2018:
I don’t take the intentions of the founding fathers as gospel. They had some great ideas and made a great bill of rights. They also wisely put in mechanisms for amendments so that the constitution can change as the times do.
Ugh the 'nice guy' complex.

Most of us have been on the other end. Having a good back and forth, then a looong pause after you’re last sent message. It’s frustrating, but you can’t assume the person is intentionally ignoring you. Common sense isn’t that common.

Sorry to hear about your grief. I lost my mother when I was 26. It was devastating. I eventually got to the point where I can think of her and feel good. I eventually got over it, but it took loads of time.

MATH IS ABSOLUTE But is it really?
indirect76 comments on Apr 5, 2018:
I used to think math is absolute, as if it were fundamentally built into reality. It would be easy to see it this way. After reading about quantum mechanics and Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorum, I had to abandon thie notion of their connection.

What is truth?
indirect76 comments on Apr 5, 2018:
For me, truth is reality. A fact is our best understanding of reality. Facts can change while truth does not. Newtonian laws were once fact, but relativity was discovered and the facts changed. Not the best analogy, but I think it illustrates what I’m saying.

Is there intelligent life out there in the universe?
indirect76 comments on Apr 4, 2018:
I’ll start speculating on intelligent life out there once it’s discovered on Earth somewhere.

Tough. I have a somewhat similar situation with my 10 year old niece. Her father and I are not religious, but her mother has her believing in angels and what not. When things like that come up, we ask her if that is what she believes and gently explain what we believe. We then make it clear that she is free to believe what she wishes. At the end of the day we’re hoping she just believes what she wants to, and not what she is told to regardless of what it is.

Having the responsibility of a family is great motivator for someone to seek higher pay. This is a factor a lot of people would not consider I think.
I like to equate God to the square root of minus one. (Gd=root -1) Why?
indirect76 comments on Apr 3, 2018:
Not the best analogy. Despite the ‘imaginary’ moniker of the square root of negative numbers, they are every bit as ‘real. as any other number. Just ask an electrical engineer. They use Negative square roots all the time. There was a time when negative numbers were considered to be nonsensical. Even zero had to be gradually accepted. That said, I’m of the opinion that ALL numbers are purely imaginary. They happen to map well to real world situations, but do not exist per se. Your post is interesting though and very thought provoking.
